I've been working at a collegaues laptop for a while now clearing out all kind of spyware, malware, viruses, trojans, etc. etc. Real eyeopener for me!

Anyway I'm getting clean bills of health from CWShredder, SpyBot, McAfee and have a firewall in place now but she still has problems when opening Word documents. If she opens the Word app it runs almost immediately and if she opens a doc from inside it again it opens almost immediately. But if she double clicks any Word doc to open it and the ap simultaneously it takes an absolute age.

Obviously it could be completed unconnected to all the other problems she had (has?) but it did start to happen around the same time.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers,
Mark

I think some spyware is left in the laptop. If I were you, i would make a HijackThis log and post it here. Experts can see if your PC is really clean from malware like virusses and spyware.

See here for explaination of HijackThis and how to use.

What operating system are you running? Assuming XP, the prefetch may be corrupt. Delete all the files in %winnt%\prefetch but do not delete the folder itself. Then click on "Start" => "Run" and type in winword /prefetch:1 and see if it is any faster.

I'm off to try both options - I'll report back with the results asap.

Ok,

I tried the start winword/prefetch 1 thing but it didn't work. But first I should check a couple of things - I opened up the dos prompt via the new option under accessories and then I had to cd up to the office folder before the command worked. Would that have made a difference?

I've run Hijack and pasted in the results below.

All help is greatly appreciated.

For what it's worth Word is now playing a blinder - Many thanks!

I am not quite sure what you mean by this? Is the issue with Word resolved?

Your log is looking much, much better :)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Run Ad-Aware with the latest update.
    • Download the latest version of Ad-Aware from here.
    • After installing Ad-aware, and before running the program, Please be sure to update the reference file as per these instructions.
    • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
      • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
      • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
      • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives" (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)

      • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
      • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).

    • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
  • Download the latest version of Spybot from either:
    • Install spybot and by default is should install into C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy.
    • Run Spybot by clicking on "Start" => "Programs" => "Spybot - Search & Destroy" => "Spybot - Search & Destroy".
    • The first time you run it, allow it to create a backup of your registry when prompted. This will take a few minutes to complete.
    • Click on "Search for Updates".
    • If any updates are found, place a check mark next to each and click on "Download Updates".
    • Click on "Immunize" and once it detect what has or has not been blocked, block all remaining items by clicking on the green plus sign next to immunize at the top.

Done, Done and Done!

Apologies for the confusing football/soccer reference - indeed Word now opens as fast as.... well let's just says it's fast :D

And due to all your much appreciated help I am extremely popular in the office

If I could send you one of the fancy coffees that materialise on my desk when my back is turned I would.

Thanks again,
Mark
