:techsupport: Hello all. Please I need help ASAP. Im sure I have spyware on computer. I run spybot on regular basis but since last night when I run it, it freezes half way through the cleaning process. Im getting pop-ups all over the place and my tool bar keeps changing. PLEASE take a look at my HJT file and advise.

Thanks in advance.

Your log has multiple infections - Some of the worst ones to remove. Please, until we have this all cleaned up - Do not browse the Internet with the exception of this site for instructions.

The first one I want to get rid of is responsible for installing other problems:
How to remove Wintools infections.
  • Disable System restore as per the instructions here.
  • Reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?
  • Click on "Start" => "Control Panel" => "Administrative Tools" => "Services".
  • Look for a service called "Wintools for IE Service" => Double-click it to open, then click on the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled. Do not worry if the service is not listed.
  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for "WtoolsA.exe", "WToolsS.exe" and "WSup.exe". If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.
  • Go into "Add/Remove Programs" in the "Control Panel" and look for any Wintools entry. Uninstall it.
  • Open a command prompt by clicking on "Start" => "Run" and type in "cmd" and click on "OK". At the prompt, type regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" (Quotation marks must be typed in on the preceeding command) then <ENTER>.
  • Type exit to close the command prompt window.
  • Delete the following directories:
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools
    • C:\Program Files\Toolbar
  • Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":
    • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa

Lie I mentioned - There are many infections so do not do anything with the others just yet.

Ok first Thanks for your help and sorry about mulit posts....Followed instruction as per this post. Did as you said and here is new HJT log. However 3 quick things. First When I went to add/remove would not remove folder Wintools Easy installer...said "rundll error loading....specified module could not be found.

Second would not let me delete toolbar folder in program files...said " cannot delete cursors"

Third had to leave safe mode to allow computer back into system restore....

Here is new log

Next thing - Can you delete ALL O16 entries using HijackThis. Many of them are adware/spyware related. If there are valid programs, they will be downloaded again the next time you visit the relevant sites. There are some on-line games - They are notorious for adware - Stay away from them.

Reboot after and post another log and I'll walk you through the rest of the cleanup.

Removed all 016 enteries. I noticed some were Yahoo games with the whole family goes onto. Will that create a problem down the road?

Anyway here is new log after re-boot

For the games - Yes, it will stop them working. They are free because of adware. Go and buy a CD of games from the local computer store and do not run the on-line "Free" ones or we will see you back a lot sooner than you want to be back :)
  • Go in "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel and look for a program name similar to "WebHancer" and uninstall it.
  • We need to remove a program called "Twain-Tec". To do this, first you need to disable System restore as per the instructions at here . Twiantec.dll is a transponder. HijackThis will detect it as a BHO but it must not be removed using HijackThis. This is because of the remaining registry entries and files which can be dangerous. Instead the following method of removal is preferable and complete:
Go to "Add/Remove Programs" => Uninstall "Twain-Tech". Reboot the computer to SAFE mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?. Delete twaintech.dll and twaintec.ini If twaintech.dll is in use, then you would need to rename it, reboot the computer, and then delete it.
  • How to Remove CoolWebSearch with CoolWeb Shredder <= Please click on this link for instructions on how to download and use CoolWebSearch Shredder which will help remove a CWS infection on your computer. Make sure you close all programs and windows before running it and be sure to click on the "Fix" button.
  • Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":

  • Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?
  • The following FILES, DIRECTORIES and DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory) need to be deleted while in safe mode. Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders". If the files etc listed are not present - Do not worry, just delete those that you can find. If no path is listed, you may need to search for the file(s) - To search, click on "Start" => "Search" => "For Files and Folders" => "All Files and Folders" and type in the file name. You can delete it right from the search results window.
    • DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory)
      • C:\Windows\Temp\

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Msnnhcn] C:\WINDOWS\System32\MSNNHCN.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindUpdates] C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\WinUpdt.exe

Remove those entries in HIjackThis, the delete the file: C:\WINDOWS\System32\MSNNHCN.EXE and the directory: C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

This entry still concerns me ...
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindUpdates] C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\WinUpdt.exe

Can you remove it using HijackThis, reboot into safe mode and run HijackThis again to see if it is still there, if so, delete it. Then, delete the C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\ folder.

To answer the last question - Run each program under each account aas there are some entries that will only show up if the user is logged on.

Finally - Looks clean :) Definitely good news...

The following is a recommended maintenance regime for Windows XP:
  • The following DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory), need to be regularly emptied. Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders". Click on "Apply to All Folders" and then respond "Yes" when prompted and click on "OK" to apply the change.
    • %windir%\prefetch\
    • %windir%\Temp\
    • %temp%\
    • %userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp\
    • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
    • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
  • Click on "Start" => "Settings" => "Control Panel" => "Internet Options". Click on "Delete Files", select "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK". Click on "OK" once more to close the options panel.
  • Right click on "Recycle Bin" and select "Empty Recycle Bin" and respond "Yes" when prompted.
  • Back-Up your files. You can use Windows backup which must be installed from the XP CD <cd-Drive>\valuadd\msft\ntbackup. Be sure to back up the following:
    • Office documents
    • Email data - Messages and address book
    • Games saves.
    • Digital Photos and other artwork.
    • Moveis that you have created or edited.
    • MP3's and other music files.
    • Browser favorites and bookmarks.
    • Downloaded files/programs.
    • Passwords, security codes etc for anything that is password protected like Quicken.
    • Activation codes for applications doownloaded and registered.
  • Do not go without an anti-virus program. Free ones include:
  • Be sure to run a periodic Trojan Scan with any of the following programs:
  • Use a Firewall such as ZoneAlarm
  • Regularly scan for adware and spyware using the following programs:
  • Defragment your system. Click on "Start" => "Programs" => "Accessories" => "System Tools" => "Disk Defragmenter".
  • Update your system. Go to Microsoft Windows Update and download all critical updates for your system.
  • Cleanup Your Disk. Click on "Start" => "Programs" => "Accessories" => "System Tools" => "Disk Cleanup".
  • Clear your icon cache. Delete the following file: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db. Reboot.
