First of all, thanks a ton for all the good info on your website. Second, I've read the FAQ. I have downloaded CWShredder (although it doesn't seem to run to completion), Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, BHBlaster, and HijackThis. I also am running NPF2004 with the updates downloaded from your website(ie-proad and ProWagon). I have pasted my hijackthis log file beneith this commentary and I have the startuplist log waiting (if requested).

The problems:
1. Obviously other programs were surfing the web for me (I now know this to be hijacked)
2. Font sizes were changing, browser windows would become inactive during use, popups galore even with popup blocker, zonealarm, and NPF2004 active. Originally ran AdAware and got very limited returns. Attempted to locate and delete problem files in c:windows and c:windows/sys32 folders. Deleted Temp files and tried to use Windows Task Manager to locate and delete questionable programs. Some luck, but Webrebates0.exe would not be put down. Of course there were numerous other programs that were similar in their resistance. Searched internet for the same and found your site. Education begins.
3. Downloaded Spybot S&D(most current version) and got much better results. Still having a variety of problems, although much improved.
4. Here is my hijackthis log file:

Sorry, just read the post before mine, I tried to update to Hijackthis 1.98 but either your server was down or the bugs kept me from getting there because I timed out.

Lcl7.exe
VshipZ.exe
Jji07z.exe
lqnge94E.exe
Xho5z.exe
The above applications appear to be portions of the WebRebates.exe crapware suite. I have found them in C:/Windows/prefetch and in various other places on my pc. If you stop one of them with windows task manager, the program starts another one of the above programs. At times there maybe two sets of programs running at the same time (which lead to the worst issues with MSIE - caps lock, cntl, browser windows swapping, etc.) At this point my pc is running five svchost.exe sessions under the processes tab. I have no clue whether this is normal.
I maybe picking out stuff that is regular processes, I'm not sure, I'm just trying to make some sort of headway.

First post was 24th of July, still waiting on help (obviously you guys are pretty busy from your backlog). Another malware application appears to be YabrFx8f.exe. After performing a file search for this file and those listed above, the only mention of them is in the c:/windows/prefetch as a prefetch file. Thanks again in advance for your assistance.

You have a number of problems, but the first one we need to address is the Peper Trojan. Click HERE to download the PeperFix tool - save it to your desktop.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key during bootup (or see Starting Your Computer in Safe Mode).

Run Peperfix. Reboot into Safe Mode once more, and run it again.

Still in Safe Mode, run a new HijackThis scan and mark all of these items that are still present for removal:

Make sure all browser and Windows Explorer windows are closed, and click on Fix Checked.

While still in Safe Mode, make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any Windows Explorer window and click on Tools => Folder Options => View and be sure to check off Show Hidden Files and Folders.

If they are still present, delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\VshipZ.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Lqnge94e.exe

Then delete all the contents of this folder (but not the folder itself):
C:\Documents and Settings\brook\Local Settings\Temp

Reboot normally, run another HJT scan, and post it here for further review.

Very good - no sign of the Peper, or the Roings, or any other malware - good work!

Somehow I missed having you move HijackThis - create a folder via Windows Explorer for HijackThis (such as C:\HJT), then move the file (HijackThis.exe) to that folder. This way any backups created are saved in a legit folder. If there are backups on your Desktop from the previous cleaning, you can go ahead and delete them - they won't be needed.

There's not much left to do - run a new HJT scan, and mark these items for removal:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

The rest of these are optional items - they're not malware, merely resource hogs that drain system resources and don't necessarily need to be running at startup - it's your choice whether to remove them or not:

This is a registration reminder for Creative products.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe

This runs RealPlayer at Startup. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

This is a background task that is a plug-in manager for Creative drivers. Given its purpose CTHELPER would normally be classified as a "leave alone" background task. Unfortunately there are often problems with CTHELPER, most notably that it can use 100% of CPU time.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTHelper] CTHELPER.EXE

This runs QuickTime at Startup. You can start it manually if/when you need it.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

This launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. Some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it isn't required anyway.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Make sure all browser and Windows Explorer windows are closed, and click on Fix Checked.

Now, it's time to clear out your System Restore so you don't accidentally re-enable the malware.
  • Click Start > Control Panel > System
  • Under the System Restore tab, place a check mark in the box next to "Turn off System Restore on all drives" and click Apply
  • Reboot the computer
  • Repeat step A and uncheck the box selected in step B, click Apply, a clean restore point will be created automatically (no need to reboot again)
Be sure to keep updated with all the Windows Critical Updates.

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, consider installing:

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

More info and download is available at:
SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
SpywareGuard: http://www.wildersse...ywareguard.html

IE/Spyad places over 5000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

More info and download is available at:
IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm

You might also want to consider installing a firewall program - two very good free ones are available thru the links in my Signature. I use Kerio Personal Firewall myself.

If you're still having any problems let me know, otherwise you're good to go.
