Hello, I am new to this site, but think that maybe you can help me. I have Windows me, and need help removing Wintools infections. I have read teh FAQ, do have spybot s&d, and Ad-aware. Both were done right before I ran the hijack this scan, and I have updated all the programs mentioned. None of this has helped, I even ran ad-aware in safe mode.
Thanks, Rob

Marianna, (or anyone with any advice on this)
Before I begin going through all of the other steps, I wanted to check with you because unfortunately when i go to the task manager on windows me to end task on all of the wtoolsa, winka, wsup, and winupdt tasks, it comes back saying program not responding what do you want to do, and i then click end task like i am supposed to. Unfortunately, when i look at the task manager again to do the next one, the prior one has come back. I cannot end the task for but just a second or two before they come back on.
Should I go through the process anyway?
Thanks for you time and efforts
Rob

How to remove Wintools infections.
  • Disable System restore as per the instructions here.
  • Reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?
  • Click on "Start" => "Control Panel" => "Administrative Tools" => "Services".
  • Look for a service called "Wintools for IE Service" => Double-click it to open, then click on the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled. Do not worry if the service is not listed.
  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for "WtoolsA.exe", "WToolsS.exe" and "WSup.exe". If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.
  • Go into "Add/Remove Programs" in the "Control Panel" and look for any Wintools entry. Uninstall it.
  • Open a command prompt by clicking on "Start" => "Run" and type in "cmd" and click on "OK". At the prompt, type regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" (Quotation marks must be typed in on the preceeding command) then <ENTER>.
  • Type exit to close the command prompt window.
  • Delete the following directories:
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools
    • C:\Program Files\Toolbar
  • Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\WTOOLSB.DLL
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
    • O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
    • O4 - HKLM\..\RunServicesOnce: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\WTOOLSA.EXE /boot
  • Reenable System restore as per the instructions here.
  • Reboot and sign in as per normal and post a new HijackThis log for further review.
The rest of the infections will be fixed after Wintools has been removed.

PGPhantom, I would appreciate any other advice you would have for me, but unfortunately I cannot follow your instructions...I believe that they are for Windows XP....I have Windows ME and could not find an Administrative tools tab or folder and also cannot get to a processes tab in the task manager.

One side note, after getting to safe mode by going through my system configuration utility and then rebooting, it rebooted me with everything on my startup list turned on plus a few i must have turned off long ago, like aol tray icons, etc....one of which hangs up my computer (i think something from aol 9.0), any thoughts on cleaning up those items from startup list...when i hit cleanup they just do not go away

so far i have followed Marianna's directions to the adaware spot and see no sign of the wintools on the task manager, but I am still working
thanks,rob

Marianna, I followed your instructions (although the first step would not work because they kept popping up) another piece to add to yout steps for the future....in safe mode when deleting windupdates folder and wintools folder i had to cntl alt del to get to my task manager and end task on wtoolsa.exe and wink.exe before i could successfully delete the folders...otherwise i would delete one copy and then another would appear.

Anyway, i really appreciate all of your help and here is my new log

HI Rjdavisone

You did a GREAT job !!! super

One small "thing" to fix:

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\WTOOLSB.DLL (file missing)

Reboot.

Then your computer is clean again !

should I post another log with my selective startup turned off?

If you want - o.k. no problem.

BTW I am on a winme and I have "selective startup" running as I disabled several items at startup. But let's see what YOU have :)

Next open Hijack This and check the boxes next to these:

Marianna, I really appreciate all the help, I feel like I understand my computer a little better now, I like to think I pick up things quickly....
anyway...the websites you recommended will help me to speed up things alittle more...right now though it is the fastest i have seen in a while (although my system resources are only 69% free....is this normal?)

now back to my current wintools problem....i believe that the first time we did everything took care of it, i believe that the reason the hjtlog showed wtoolsb.exe and others was due to me rebooting in normal mode (not selective startup) and they were still on the startup list.....I unchecked the wintools and windupdt boxes and hit cleanup and they disappeared. I rebooted in safe mode (viewing hidden and sytem files) just to make sure they were gone and yes they were.

next i rebooted again and checked the startup list in the system configuration box, the task manager, looked for them in c:programs/

and finally ran hjt and do not see them....so thanks alot.....if you are ever in town maybe i'll buy you dinner (being a manager and all)

anyway...here is my new (and hopefully final log)

Hi Rob,

Super - great job !

Maybe you should consider switiching to Firefox instead of IE - your version is outdated -I tried to update to IE 6 SP1 on my winme - but it didn't work - so I switched to Firefox and I really love it ! Worth thinking about it :)

Anyway I can give you the link:

http://www.mozilla.o...Setup-0.9.2.exe

No, is not normal to have 69 % at startup - try unchecking at startup what you really do NOT need - as I start up I have 86 % - you always can put back a check in your startup items ! Is AOL taking up a LOT??

Is "C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate" folder bad, like "C:\Program Files\WindUpdates"?

It contains a drivers.xml, and item.xml, a folder labeled "v4" with iuhist.xml, iuident.rar, iuident.txt, a temp folder with iuident.rar as well.

Thanks!

Also: WindowsSA which contains things like casino...and omnisicient, can I just delete this? :)

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to %ProgramFiles%\WindowsUpdate, generally at C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate.
Delete every file and sub-folder, except the V4 sub-folder.
Expand the V4 sub-folder and delete every file and sub-folder except iuhist.xml, which contains your Windows Update installation history.

Also: WindowsSA which contains things like casino...and omnisicient, can I just delete this?

YES, you can delete delete the entire Windows SA folder.

HTH :)

MrToad87

You're Welcome :)

WinTools appears to be a variant of Huntbar

HuntBar is a search-hijacker from Traffic Syndicate, with various additional features depending on version.

http://www.doxdesk.c...te/HuntBar.html

Also here is an excellent source for tips to tighten security. Follow the advice and get the free downloads to help avoid some of these problems in the future.

Happy Safe Computing :)
