I recently (3 whole days ago) completely restored my family PC. Unfortunately I did not get my virus protection, adaware and such reloaded and now the computer is right back where I started. I have run adaware 6.0 and HJT. Here is my log. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

O2 - BHO: Recommended Hotfix - {0421701D-CF13-4E70-ADF0-45A953E7CB8B} - C:\Program Files\Recommended Hotfix - 421701D\v15\RH.DLL

I'm not an expert, but I would recommend just nuking this. My wife's computer had this and it was causing trouble. It appeared in add/remove programs I think, so go there and just remove it. Then delete the directory and empty your recycle bin.

If you search google for rh.dll you'll find lots of info about it.

Hhmmm. You have a severley compromised machine there!

First, get an on line scan at either Housecall or Panda A/V, and let it fix anything it finds.

Next, download AdAware from http://www.lavasoft.de/

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".

Make sure the following settings are made and on (ON=GREEN)

From main window click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

Click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning", "Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

To save your settings click "proceed".

Now click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

reboot again, and let Adaware run if it asks.

Then rescan with Hijack this, and post a fresh log.
Be wary of strong drink. It may make you shoot at tax collectors, and miss!

Thanks Dave38 for the response. I wont be able to complete the tasks until morning. Not at my PC tonight. I will post a new HJT log in the morning. If you get a spare moment please advise on how I can protect my PC from these attacks in the future. Is there other software I can download or purchase that helps prevent this sort of thing. I already use Mcafee virus scan and the spyware protection provided with AOL. Again, thanks for the response. It is a shame that people find the need to cause problems for others.

I have done the steps you requested and have run a new HJT. I ran the panda virus removal and no virus files were found bu my McAfee was saying the following:

object-c002[1].hta is infected by the js/iestart.gen.d virus

It could not clean and would not let me delete the file. When I rebooted after running adaware I did not receive the McAfee Virus warning.

Here is my log:
