OK, This is about my son's computer. Its a Gateway PIII, 700 Mhz running Win98.

He has CW_Shredder, AVG Free version anti virus, Ad-Aware. All updated within the last 48 hours.

It runs extremely slow and locks up a lot. A red screen comes up periodically about 3 viruses in C:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer\.....I didnt get it all. AVG cant delete them. The red screen says something like Allow Access? Yes/No. If you say no you cant do anything so you hit Yes and you can continue (for a while)

My sons download a lot of stuff off KazaaLite. I have read the FAQ.

Heres the HiJack log.

Hello,

Please print a copy of these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode and/or with all windows closed except HijackThis.

Your copy of HijackThis is outdated. Please create a new folder on the C: drive and name it C:\HJT or something similar. You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select "New" then "Folder" and name it HJT. Next, click here to download the latest version of HijackThis, v1.98. Download it directly into the new folder. Delete your old copy of HijackThis.

Next, change your settings to show hidden files and folders. Then reboot into Safe Mode.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel and uninstall MyWay, MyBar, Mysearch, Twaintec, 1stBar, WebRebates as well as any additional "search" programs and/or Toolbar programs that may appear dubious.

P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns. I strongly recommend that you remove it in Add/Remove Programs, and remove the associated entries hightlighted in RED below.

Now, run HijackThis in Safe Mode...

Place a check mark next to the following items then, WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, select “fix checked.”

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{0428FFC7-1931-45b7-95CB-3CBB919777E1} - (no file)

Now, search for, and delete if found, (some files may not be present after previous steps) the following:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWAY\ < folder

C:\PROGRAM FILES\SIDEFIND\ < folder

C:\WINDOWS\TWAINTEC.DLL < file

C:\PROGRAM FILES\ISTBAR\ < folder

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\P2P NETWORKING\ < folder

C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr\ < folder

C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\ < folder

c:\program files\180solutions\ < folder

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\pigfjazz.exe < file

C:\WINDOWS\xmdqziz.exe < file

C:\PROGRAM FILES\WEB_REBATES\ < folder

Remain in Safe Mode....

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

C:\Temp\

Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select "delete all offline content."

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot into normal mode.

Proceed to the Windows Update site (see link below) download and install ALL critical updates.

Reboot when finished.

If you are not running version 1.3 of Spybot S & D, click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3 - install, update, reboot into Safe Mode, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot into normal mode when done.

Perform a customized Ad-aware scan in Safe Mode........

If you do not have the latest version of Ad-aware, version 6, Build 6.181, click here to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then boot into Safe Mode, start the program, and click the gear wheel at the top and check these options to configure Ad-aware for a customized scan:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?" Reboot into normal mode when finished.

Next, perform online virus and Trojan scans, using the links in my signature below. Allow the programs to delete all that they may find. Reboot after each scan.

Scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log into this same thread.

OK, first of all, thanks NonSuch for responding. I tried to do all that you said but couldn't do it all.

I updated HiJack and ran it. When I went to Add/Remove, Some of the things you mentioned were there and others were not. I removed P2p.

i RAN HiJack in Safe Mode. Some of the things were not there (I assume its because I did the add/remove thing)

Same with deleting the folders you mentioned. some were not there.

I deleted the temp folders, however, I couldn't do the C:\Windows\temp folder in safe mode. I kept getting the blue screen of death. so I had to do it in normal mode. That folder had thousands of files, mostly kmd****.tmp which I'm assuming stands for Kazaa Media Desktop.

I updated Windows. I d/l and installed and ran Spybot. I couldn't run Ad-aware in safe mode. Again, blue screen of death. ran it in normal mode.

Ran the Housecall, online virus check. It found 2 viruses. One was a Trojan in C:\HJT\backups.

Heres the new HiJack Log.

Hello,

You've done a great job! Posted Image This is a clean log.

Here are some tips to help you keep it that way......

Download IE-SPYAD here: https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm

It will place over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so that you don't accidentally visit innocent appearing sites that aren't really innocent.

There's also a small program, called RegistryProt that will warn you when a program attempts to make changes to your registry and will ask you if you want to allow the change. You'll find it here, under "freeware": http://www.diamondcs...p?page=products

It appears from the log that two antivirus programs are running, AVG and Norton. Having two antivirus and/or firewall programs running at start-up can cause conflicts and problems. Sometimes people keep two AV programs on their system, but they only have one active at a time. Never allow both programs to be active at the same time.

Scan often with Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-aware to remove malware before it gains a foothold on your computer. (Links below). Install SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard to keep baddies from invading your system. (Links below).

Make sure you keep your system updated by frequent visits to the Windows Update site (see link below). Always install ALL critical updates.

Please take a minute or two to read the short article, "How did I get infected in the first place?" (See link in my signature below). You will find good information on keeping your system clean in the future, as well as links for excellent free anti-spyware tools.

Again I thank you for your help. This site is the greatest. :D

A couple of last questions. If I still have some viruses on my sons computer (and I think I do) should I address that issue in the virus forum?

Is it enough for me to uncheck the Norton AV program from the startup list in msconfig? I'm not sure I want to uninstall it at this point. The subscription has expired which is why I have the AVG one running. Can you point out to me which line items to uncheck?

If I install IE-Spyad will it restrict my sons from accessing sites they currently visit?

I'm afraid that if in install the RegistryProt program that my sons will ignore it anyway so I probaly won't do that one.

If we run Spybot S&D from now on why do we need SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard?

Hello,

You're very welcome.

Yes, if you have questions regarding viruses, the best place to get them answered would be in that forum.

You may be able to change settings within Norton AV to disable it from automatically running at start up. I would look there first. If not, then rather than using msconfig to disable Norton, there's a neat little free program I use called Starter. It makes it simple and easy to stop programs from running at start up. It has a nice graphic interface and you'll easily be able to see the Norton entry and remove the check mark next to it. You can download the program here....

I have IE-SPYAD on my computers. The sites it blocks are sites that would present a danger to my system and I certainly don't mind a bit that they're blocked. It's a protection I really appreciate, especially when checking out things in someone's HJT log.

Spybot S&D is a program that removes things that have gotten into your computer. SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard stop them before they get into your system. They're free programs and they all work well together.

I hope you find this information helpful.
