      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.

popups won't stop

15 posts in this topic

I have tried cleaning this computer as much as I could, and I ran spybot. The popups won't stop. Below is the HajackThis log file. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Rick

Hi rickboston,

You have some special cases that require manual removal, hopefully it won't be too difficult.

First off, you have a newdotnet infection. To remove it, please follow the instructions here:

http://www.newdotnet.com/#remove

Also, you have wintools, please follow these instructions provided by PGPhantom:

  1. Disable System restore as per the instructions here.
  2. Reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?
  3. Click on "Start" => "Control Panel" => "Administrative Tools" => "Services".
  4. Look for a service called "Wintools for IE Service" => Double-click it to open, then click on the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled. Do not worry if the service is not listed.
  5. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for "WtoolsA.exe", "WToolsS.exe" and "WSup.exe". If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.
  6. Go into "Add/Remove Programs" in the "Control Panel" and look for any Wintools entry. Uninstall it.
  7. Open a command prompt by clicking on "Start" => "Run" and type in "cmd" and click on "OK". At the prompt, type regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" (Quotation marks must be typed in on the preceeding command) then <ENTER>.
  8. Type exit to close the command prompt window.
  9. Delete the following directories:
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools
    • C:\Program Files\Toolbar

[*]Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":

  • .... You need to include all the HijackThis log entries in relation to ToolBar and WTools

[*]Reenable System restore as per the instructions here.

[*]Reboot and sign in as per normal

You also have kazaa on your computer which I would highly recommend you remove. You should be able to uninstall it in add/remove programs.

Once you have done that, I would use ad-aware.

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.lavasoft.de/res/aaw6.exe

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

icon11.gif Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

  • In the General window make sure the following are selected:
    • Automatically save log-file
    • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
    • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

[*]Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :

    • Scan Within Archives
    • Scan Active Processes
    • Scan Registry
    • Deep Scan Registry
    • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
    • Scan my Hosts file
    • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
      • All of your hard drives

icon11.gif Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:

  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details

icon11.gif Click the Tweak button and select:

  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile

    [*]Under the Cleaning Engine:

    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

icon11.gif Click on Proceed to save the settings.

icon11.gif Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page, and then choose:

  • Use Custom Scanning Options

icon11.gif Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

icon11.gif Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

icon11.gif When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

icon11.gifReboot your computer..

(ad-aware instructions formatting by Fireflyer)

I would also recommend doing an online virus scan here:

http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx

Just check to have it auto fix any problems it finds and have it scan your hole hard drive.

Please post if it was unable to delete a file.

Once you are done with the online scan, please reboot and post an updated HJT log.

Thanks again

When you ran the virus scan earlier, did it find anything?

I just ran the virus scan. I was not able to run it originally, so I ran housecall.antivirus.com, This cleaned out some things, then I was able to run the one you recommended and it did not find anything. I have since installed Norton Antivirus. Still getting pop-ups. Here is the latest HijackThis log

Thanks again

Rick

Okay, let's try again.

Run HJT and have it fix the following:

Great news, everything looks good!

Here is how to protect yourself in the future - download and install these:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD

Both are very small free programs that you run once, and then just occasionally to check for updates.

And also see

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Personally though, I think the best way to protect yourself is to download firefox (it's a different browser than IE) at http://www.mozilla.org
