I have encountered huge problems with spyware recently. I was able to subdue attacks by allaboutsearching.com with the help of friends and family, but now seem to be reinfected by lop.com and spotresults.com, and possibly zestyfinds.com as well. I have attempted to repair using suggestions at FAQ, and have scanned with adaware, spy-bot, and AVG and Norton antivirus. I do not know a huge amount about computers and programming, and I am a bit uncomfortable deleting too much. The following is my most recent hijackthis scan. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Hi, mslewis,

Let's see if I can help out a fellow Tarheel fan....

Enable the "Show Hidden Folders" option, like this:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden Files and Folders heading select Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Uncheck the Hide Protected Operating System Files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

We shall remove WinTools first, and then we'll clean the remnants and flush your System Restore.

First open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) close as many of the Wintools processes that you can see listed such as:
WToolsA.exe
WToolsS.exe
WSup.exe

Then go to Add/Remove Programs and remove Wintools.

Reboot into Safemode this way:
Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Search for these and delete them if they still exist:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SWin32.dll <-file
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe <-Wintools folder with file
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll <-Wintools folder with file

Reboot normally.

Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Start the program and then check the "I Know What I'm Doing" box.

Move all instances of lspak.dll (and nothing else), to the Remove pane.
Click the Finish Button and reboot.

Find and delete the file c:\windows\system\lspak.dll

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and history in Internet Options. And clean out your
%Userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp (User Profile: repeat for all users)

Flush System Restore:
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Please move HJT to a permanent folder if its own where it can save backups.
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

For now, run HJT with all other windows/brower closed, and tick to fix these:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - (no file)
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O16 - DPF: {DDFFA75A-E81D-4454-89FC-B9FD0631E726} - http://www.bundleware.com/activeX/DS3/DS3.cab

I could find no info on these two. If you do not know what they are have HJT fix them!
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [locksgrid] C:\PROGRA~1\SHOWAT~1\waveokaycoal.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BagsBarbWipeBits] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\anti tons bags barb\safegpl.exe

There may still be several things in your HJT log should be fixed, however your version is outdated,
and the new one reveals more.
Please download version 1.98:
Download HijackThis to its own permanent folder.
http://www.spywarein.../HijackThis.exe
If that link is not working, extract from http://www.downloads.../hijackthis.zip
To create a folder:
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.
Double-click on the .exe to scan.
Please post a HijackThis log.. After Scan, the Scan button changes to Save Log.
Click that, save it somewhere. Do Ctrl-A to Select all, and then copy and paste it here.
Then we can clean up the rest. Thanks.

Thank you for your help. Let me apologize now for my computer illiteracy. I have been unable to remove any wintools from my computer. When I open taskmanager and attempt to close end the processes, I get a warning and then am denied access. The computer says the process can not be completed. I see wintools installer in add/remove programs, but I have not tried to uninstall. I will run HJT again and fix the suspicious entries, but would greatly appreciate additional help. Go Heels

Try Task Manager and/or Add/Remove in Safemode:
Reboot into Safemode this way:
Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.
Perhaps that will work better.
Go Heels!

I am very hesutant to add/remove the wrong thing. In safemode, the only thing in add/remove entitled Wintools is Wintools Easy installer. Is this the thing to remove? Thanks again

I no longer see Wintools in your log, but I do see a few new items.
Did you install SED.exe?

Please run the LSP fix again, and this time have it fix the new one.

Start the program and then check the "I Know What I'm Doing" box.
Move all instances of cdlsp.dll (and nothing else), to the Remove pane.
Click the Finish Button.

Reboot into Safemode.

Find and delete the file c:\windows\system\cdlsp.dll <=file

Reboot normally. Run HJT with ALL other windows/browser closed and tick to fix these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.sdvuxltaiaranbdlqdpm.com/jjxM2p...N5S2TQEGc4.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.mkxeqobzvifvpx.com/jjxM2pUM7lUX...urJRwrK8SG.html

Use the http://www.theelderg...nup_utility.htm Disk Cleanup Utility to empty all your Temp folders.

Run Updated Ad-aware and Spybot again.
Please post a fresh log. (HJT has been updated to version 1.98.1, so you might want to get it.)

I do not know what SED.exe is. Should I have installed it? I have had trouble with Disk Cleanup. When I initiated the scan, it just said compressing old files for hours, never moved beyond 3 bars. I followed directions at the geek website to get around the problem, and have saved the VolumeCache backup to my desktop. I have been unable to clean up, and also unable to restore as the website instructs. The computer is moving very slowly now, as bad as before my brother first intervened. My adaware scan also took well over an hour. A file named ahd.dll was not cleared. Here is the new HJT scan.

Mslewis,

Regarding SED: It appears to be a legitimate program used in programming for manipulation on text files. That is why I asked about it. It was not in your earlier logs.
I am not sure what was happening with Ad-aware and why that .dll could not be cleared, but we'll work on that after we get additional information from you.

There seem to be a few people having problems with that particluar disk cleanup tool today, so you are not alone.
See if this way works better for you:
Delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (Do not delete the temp folder itself.)
For example:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, being sure to also select "Delete All Offline Content".

It is difficult for me to tell how and why files and configurations are changing with so many people trying to fix your problem.

I'm curious if there are any issues with Trojans.
Give this online scan a try: Housecall: http://www.trendmicr.../enterprise.htm
Or Panda: http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself.

Hijackthis has updated since we started this project,
so please follow the directions above to download version 1.98.1.

Run it with ALL other windows/browser closed and tick to fix this:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.fofvczvyinnwxtykfw.us/jjxM2pUM7...MurJRwrK8SG.cgi

Reboot.

Then please post a HJT Startup log:
In Hijackthis press the Config Button
Click Misc Tools.
Check both boxes under the Generate StartupList log and then click the generate startuplist log button.
Paste the contents into your next reply here, please.
Thanks.

I think that I have cleared all the temporary files. I followed the directions posted from the site listed above, http://www.theelderg...nup_utility.htm, when my cleanup did not work. I did this:
WORKAROUND
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
Locate, and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches
On the File menu, click Export, and then click Desktop, type VolumeCaches in the File name box, and then click Save.

Note This step creates a backup of the VolumeCaches registry key. If you experience any problems after you complete the steps that are listed in this procedure, you can use this backup to restore the VolumeCaches key to its original state. To restore the key, double-click the VolumeCaches.reg file on your desktop, and then click Yes.
Expand the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches
Delete the Compress old files registry key.
Quit Registry Editor.

I am concerned that I have been unable to restore as described and can no longer preform cleanup.
Here is the HJT log. I wonder about the entry RO HKCU ...search 200, but defer to your advice. Thanks

Okay, you now have a backup of your registry's Volume Caches on your desktop. Do remember that double-clicking on it will send back ALL the bad stuff if we make any changes from now on.
I usually wait a week or so to make sure everything is working, and then delete registry backups.
Perhaps we should first get all those anti-virus programs to stop tangling with each other.
It is not a good idea to be running more than one AV in realtime.
Others are fine, but should be used on demand only. Decide which one you want to keep, and please disable the others.
(If you ever need to use either of them as a backup to check something, disable the one that is always running so that you scan with one at a time.)

Once that is taken care of, reboot.

Try these:
http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe
http://lop.com/toolbar_uninstall.exe

Reboot.

Download VX2 finder from here:
http://downloads.sub...Finder(126).exe

Run Vx2Finder click on the *click to find VX2.BetterInternet* button. Then click *make log*.

Copy and paste the contents of the log into your next reply here.
Thanks!

It seems that things are much improved. I am still concerned that I am unable to perform Disk Cleanup, but other things seem to be working fine. Here is adaware info:

Don't forget to disable all but one of the anti-virus programs ASAP.
Would AA not remove that one item that it found?

Please run HJT with all other windows/browser closed, and tick to fix this one:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.earthlink.net/partner/more/msie...ton/search.html

Reboot. Please let me know how things are running at this point.

I think that I have disabled Norton and McAfee, leaving only AGV to scan nightly. When I boot, I get a host of error message from McAfee on access scanner, but it still says it is disabled when I check the settings. The computer seems to be running pretty well, certainly much better than previously. My web browsing gets redirected, and the pop ups remain, just fewer in number. Adaware removed the one thing it found today w/o complaint. I had previously overlooked your info about the lop and zestyfinds websites for removal. My security settings would not allow access to the lop site. I tried to reallow cookies, but it did not take. The vx scan is here:

You still have files from 3 AV's running at Startup. Perhaps McAfee and Symantec can tell you how to disable their products and take them out of Startup so that you can use them on demand.
We will address the malware issue:
You have a "guardian key" showing, so you will need to use another version of the tool.
Download VX2Finder from this link: http://tools.zerosre...m/VX2Finder.exe
Or from here: http://www.downloads...g/VX2Finder.exe
Run Vx2Finder. Click on the *click to find VX2.BetterInternet* button.
Then click *make log*. Close the tool and Copy and paste the contents of the log into your next reply here.

Also, run HJT with all other windows closed. Tick to fix these:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.aufrqmyfhatkaolmoaam.org/jjxM2p...urJRwrK8SG.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [locksgrid] C:\PROGRA~1\SHOWAT~1\waveokaycoal.exe

Reboot into safemode.
Look for these and delete them:

C:\PROGRA~1\SHOWAT~1\waveokaycoal.exe <- folder and file

Reboot and please post a new HJT log along with the log from Vx2Finder.

I got no error messages from McAfee at this reboot. I think that Norton and McAfee are disabled. I uninstalled virusscan for McAfee in Add/remove programs. Here is the vx log:

Run updated Ad-aware with the vx2 plug-in installed.
You can get it here: http://www.lavasoft....x2cleaner.shtml
***Be sure to execute the exe once downloaded, not just download it to the plugins folder.

Even though you removed McAfee, you still have remnants of McAfee in running processes.
We shall try to take out what I can see in your next log, but it would be a really good idea to have someone do a better cleaning job.
Please post another HJT log after using Ad-aware with the plugin. Thanks.

No problems were found by adaware or the plug in. Should I just go to add/remove to eliminate McAfee. Will I ever be able to get it back if needed? Things are running much more smoothly. There was an error (notify.exe) while running adaware that I ignored. Here is the HJT for today:

I uninstalled virusscan for McAfee in Add/remove programs.

mslewis,
If you removed the McAfee anti-virus scanner and its updater according to McAfee's instructions for doing such, then the remaining files must be taken out manually and the registry cleaned by someone who is familiar with working in the registry.
Running one anti-virus program in realtime, and one on demand, should be plenty for one machine.
If you ever need a third opinion you can use an online scan. Furthermore, keeping anti-virus programs updated as well as updating other programs is time-consuming enough.

Now that things are working well, it would be a good idea the clean temps again and flush System Restore again (refer to instructions above) so that you have a good Restore Point to go to if you need it.

Here are a few additional tips:
****You have too much running at Startup. All these use resources.
It would be a good idea to see if someone can help you use this website to take some things out of Startup.
http://www.blackviper.com/

Prevention:
Here are some simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.javacools...ywareguard.html
Periodically check for updates.

4. Keep your antivirus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs)http://www.zonelabs....ontent/home.jsp is free.

5. You might consider installing Mozilla or Firefox. http://www.mozilla.org/

6. Keep Ad-aware and Spybot updated.
Ad-aware now has a new version. See their website for removing the old and installing the new.
http://www.lavasoft....ftware/adaware/
Check for updates in Adaware frequently as they sometimes can update daily.
I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
I scan with each at least weekly.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

Happy computing!

Thank you very much for all your time and help. I am very glad to have reclaimed my computer. Now that it feels safe, my donation is on the way!. One last question. What should I do with the volume cache icon on my desktop for the old system restore? It got there when I followed instructions at the eldergeek website, but there is no mention of what to do with it or when to get rid of it. There are also two icons labeled hpothb7 and one labeled simply desktop (with a picture of a gear) that popped up somewhere along the line. Any ideas? Thank you again. Go Heels!

If I remember correctly, that "volume cache" was just a backup of your registry in case you made a mistake and needed to restore it.
It has the bad items in it, so if everything is working correctly, delete (rt-click>Delete) it along with the other items that you asked me about. Leave them in the Recycle Bin for a while to be sure all is well and then delete them from there.

Thank you for the donation.
Go Heels!
