My sincerest hanks to anyone who offers help!

Have Win98SE and M/S Internet Explorer 5.00.2614.3500IS

I have repeatedly tried to remove an unwanted homepage: about:blank

Have used Ad-aware 6.0 and Spy Sweeper 2.6.1 - both in safemode - without success.

I'm not very adept with computers and need help to remove the source of this problem.

Again, thanks in advance for helping.

First, go here:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
And update your dangerously outdated and
no-longer-supported version of IE5 to the
latest, 6/SP1, including but not limited to all
security patches on offer.

You can't possibly expect to resolve any
exploits without proper updates.

Next, read the FAQs above your post,
download hijackthis, save and post the log.

In addition to that,

1.)
GoTo:
Start>run>Type:
msinfo32
*Expand: "Software Environment"
*Expand: "System hooks"
File may be listed As:

-Hook type: Window Procedure
-Hooked by: XXXXX.dll
-Application: RUNDLL32.EXE
-Dll path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\XXXXX.dll
-Application path: C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE

Where XXXXX..dll is the file name.

If So hilite And use edit>copy and post here

2.)
Download: "StartDreck", unzip!
*Don't be f00led by the site's 'unique' interface!!!
http://members.black.../startdreck.htm
DoubleClick: 'StartDreck.exe'
Hit: -config
hit: -Unmark all
Check these boxes only:
Registry->run keys
Registry-> Browser helper objects
System/drivers-> Running processes
hit >ok.

Use the "save" tab, to save, name and post the log!

Forgot to add that I have not yet upgraded the IE5 browser - should I wait until the problem with about:blank is solved to do so?

Easy fix, in your case! ;)

File was spotted in 2/2!

*Window Procedure
Resic.dll
RUNDLL32.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Resic.dll
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE

*StartDreck log:
舞unServicesOnce
**gtyq=rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RESIC.DLL,StreamingDeviceSetup

Fix it first, following these steps:
Go here:
http://www10.brinkst...last/pvtool.htm
Download and UNzip:
"Win98Fix.zip"

-DoubleClick on: 'RunFix.reg' file, hit 'yes'
on the prompt!
-Restart computer!

Find:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RESIC.DLL file, as it should
be visible now, Zip it up and submit it on the same
page by clicking on the link provided:
files for submission:
It will open your email client, navigate
and add it as attachment! Thanks

Delete the file and it's zipped copies!

You have other problems though.
Read the FAQs here , download
and scan with both *CWShredder and
*Ad-Aware6.

Then proceed to apply all updates!
Good luck!

freeatlast,

No luck! Have followed all instructions - downloaded Spybot and CWShredder (could not use because of missing dll). Have repeatedly scanned (using Spybot, Ad-Aware6 and Spysweeper in safe-mode), found and removed the same registry items, etc. All come back.

Too tired to continue tonight - I'll check back for additional suggestions if you have any in the morning.

No luck in what exactly?

And which missing dll?

Here is what I suggest you do, in
this exact order:

1.) Go to windows updates first.
Anything you'd fix now, without proper updates will be back anyway.

2.) Reapat the same steps in my first post!

-Post the System hooks output and fresh StartDreck log!

Also confirm whether you actually ran the reg fix?
Rebooted, searched for the file?

Scanning witrh all other tools was supposed to be last step.

freeatlast,

Sorry for the delay - have dial-up = very long update session

Have updated browser c/w all security patches, etc.

Cannot run "hijackthis" and "CWShredder" because:
"A required .DLL file, MSVBM60.DLL, was not found."

Yes, I followed your instructions - including the "Win98Fix.exe"

All files were deleted - all this complete with computer restart (from safemode)

Here is what I have done today (after upgrades installed):

1) restart > command prompt only
2) c:\windows\deltree/y cookies
3) c:\windows\deltree/y history
4) c:\windows\deltree/y locals~1
5) c:\windows\deltree/y tempor~1

6) restart > safe mode

7)start>run>"msinfo32">"system hooks"
result: "There are no items to display in this category"

8) StartDreck.exe
mark only "run keys" "Browser helper objects" "Running processes"
here are the results:

This is all I have done so far today.

Regards,

popeandking

By the way ... got a popup when I logged onto Microsoft. It informed me that there was a 90% chance that spyware was installed on my machine and asked if I wanted a free scan. The properties of the window read:

HTTP M/S HTML Doc. 5.0
h t t p://vn.msie.cc/popup3.php?pin=14

[I added spaces to "http" to make sure it is not a hotlink - can't be too careful!]

The offer - and the next one I got when I logged onto Microsoft for some additional upgrades - was declined.

The about:blank is still on my machine - the Spy Sweeper program informs me every few minutes that my homepage has changed. I click "no" to the change.

"A required .DLL file, MSVBM60.DLL, was not found."

Geez, it's almost 2005, and you still don't have VB6 run times?
Download and install it here:
http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en
It's required for many programs to run!

So you were able to find and delete the hidden files, as indicated.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Resic.dll<

The other file resonsible for cws was the bho, which should have been taken care of by shredder and Ad-Aware.

Failing that, delete it in safe mode or command prompt!

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NHCJJ.DLL
You should have no trouble deleting it.

When done, and to clean all related registry keys run the tools above!
Good luck!

freeatlast,

My attitude toward computers was formed in the days when punch cards were being used - the operative word here is PUNCH

Have deleted NHCJJ.DLL and run CWShredder and Ad-Aware - all in safe mode.

Both programs found and deleted items.

Still have about:blank.

Is it possible that I am getting new doses of this crap everytime I get those spyware popups at Microsoft and at Yahoo?

Here, now that I can run it, is the highjackthis log I ran after the above:

No offence intended, but you sure have accomplished a lot! ;)

In hijackthis fix checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

Go to IE options:
In the home page field, paste:
http://www.msn.com/
Hit apply!

Programs tab> reset web settings.
'yes' to the prompt!

Advanced tab>restore defaults, and ok all to apply.

Go online, IE >view>explorer bar>search
wait for the side bar to refresh.
hit>customise tab
upper box should be checked>use search assistant>hit ok'
Click 'customise' again, >Auto search
settings>select MSN (search provider)
hit ok twice to apply.

Post fresh hijackthis log in normal
mode (your last one was in safe mode)

freeatlast,

Ha! Spent entire holiday weekend at the keyboard - first to get a V92 pci modem to work on a server that does not support it, and then to (hopefully) get rid of the about:blank that I got within 5 minutes of getting online.

Any progress has to be credited to your kind assistance!

Made the hijiackthis fixes and changes to IE options - sadly the Spy Sweeper was running in the background and it interfered with the changes. So used to clicking "no" to that "change homepage" message that I declined the changes I was trying to make! Closed Spy Sweeper and went through the process again.

Here is the hijackthis log following my visit to MSN.com and the changes to the search assistant:

I'm not sure why, but the log icon is generic, requiring that I specify using notepad to open it. This has not happened before.

Anyway, let me know what you think,

You're all set!
I had a funny feeling the remains of the
alleged problem were in SpySweeper itself as
opposed to reality, glad it's all sorted!
as for the log icon, one of them glitches.
Happens to me as well, randomly with logs.
You can reset file types in folder options if need be,
usually they come back on "their own"..

Keep yourself and your now~well maintained
Win98 out of trouble!
