Like Smiggy and Someclue(Karen) i have the same problem with this so called "About: Blank" spyware.

I have been reading sollutions posted by Daemon, but i am not sure if the same sollutions will work for my system (i'm using Windows XP, home edition 2002, service pack 1)

Like both mentioned above i have downloaded Registrar Lite and copied and searched for the things mentioned by Daemon. The thing I am not sure of is the value given by Registrar. Smiggy says the value given by registrar is C:\WINDOWS\System32\comaio.dll, but when i double click on AppInit_DDLs the value given is "AppInit_DDLs". In the other lower line value it says nothing. Don't know if type: Reg_Z, typ no: 00000001 and Size: 1 means anything.

I see in this forum that ppl use HijackThis. Is that a similar program like Spybot S&D. I use last mentioned and it finds spyware called "WebDialer", and clicking on register i can get into my computers register and see some "files" linked to "about: blank". Like Smiggy solving the problem of "Webdialer" doesnt work.

Like i said i thought about trying Dameons sollution given to Smiggy', but since there is a difference i dunno how much damage i will cause if i just blindly follow his way of solving the problem. Especially when it comes to posting logs. I have no idea what logs i should post to give the necesarry information.

So if anyone can help me with solving this problem i would be ever so gratefull.

Could you click here to download HijackThis by Merijn Bellekom. Doubleclick the file, click Unzip and it will save the application to C:\HijackThis. Run it from there to scan your computer.

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All and post it here for examination. Don't fix anything yet as most of what it lists will be harmless.

Could you click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done, rescan with HJT and post a new log here so that any remnants can be removed manually.

Also, Download 'Dllfix.exe' from here. It is a self-extracting archive; double click on it. Open the DLLFIX folder and double click on Start.bat.

At the main menu, press '1' (Run Find-All by FreeAtLast) and enter. Let the program run. When finished, press 'E' to exit. Open the DLLFix folder. Post the contents of Output.txt in this thread.

ps. i forgot to mention i had spybot do a scan just before i let hjt do a scan.

this line:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = www.msn.com

has probably been caused by me changing the local pages value from about: blank to www.msn.com.

maybe i shouldn't have done that... i was told by a colleague that messing in register files could do more harm than good..

hope i didnt mess up the chances of getting rid of this spyware

One further check. Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

and hit the "go" tab. Find: "Appinit_Dlls" value on the right side panel, DoubleClick, copy and post here the information in the 'Value' field.

This what it says when i double click on Appinit_Dlls:

key name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Value: AppInit_DLLs
Catogory: <nothing>
Description: <nothing>
Type:
REG_SZ type no: 00000001
Size: 1
Value: <nothing>

this is what i post in my first post aswell... when smiggy posted his value said something with C:\..... . When i did that the first time it said the same as it does now: AppInit_Dlls.

But i have hope that it will all work out.

Allready IE is acting more normal... u probbably heard this a zillion times: much thanks for ur help... if only we could reward u :)

Awating ur reply,

Let's try cleaning you up and see what happens. Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

If i understand you correctly this should be it... if all went well my computer should be cleared from the "about: blank" spyware.

I can't thank you enough. My girlfriend hereby offers you to have a cup of cofee with cake :) as a cellebration :)

Before closing this topic i would like to ask a few questions about this kind of spyware.

Is my computer more or less immunized to this specific spyware?
If not, can it be prevented from stiking again using adware and spybot s&d?
If those two can't prevend it do u know a better spy/adware killer?

I thought about asking you what it is you looked for in my posted files and what your tactic is, but i figured out the answer would be to technical perhaps and ... ehhh dunno if i would dare to do things like this on my own without propper guidence from experts like yourself.

I await your verdict,

WM

You're welcome - glad to help :D

Well it *looks* clean, this particular variant of CWS is nasty and has a habit of finding it's way back - the next day or so will tell.

AAW and SS&D are the best clean-up tools available, for prevention advice to help keep you clean follow the recommendations in Tony's article here:

So how did I get infected in the first place?
