Hi,

My little sister's PC is very unstable. It's slow, freezes, programs don't respond and it blurts out about 4 or 5 error messages on start-up. I thought it might be infected with a virus, so I downloaded some software to try and fix it.

Here's what I installed:

1. AVG anti-virus
2. Zone Alarm firewall
3. Spybot S&D
4. Ad-aware
5 Spyware Blaster

After installation, I let the programs do their magic and discovered 7 viruses and a host of spyware (mainly KAZAA stuff) but the machine is still not performing too well. Is there anything on my HJT log that needs to be removed ?

First, uninstall P2P Networking through Add/Remove Programs. If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.

Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

F0 - system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vxdmgr32.exe
F1 - win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\dllreg.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [load32] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\load32.exe

O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer) -

reboot, and delete

files
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\load32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\dllreg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vxdmgr32.exe

folders
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\DPI\

These may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files

Please post a followup Hijack this log, and say if the problems persist.

Hi,

Thanks Dave38 for your help.

I performed the fixes you suggested using HJT, uninstalled P2P, deleted the folders C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs and C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\DPI but I couldn't find files C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\load32.exe, C:\WINDOWS\dllreg.exe and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\vxdmgr32.exe. The machine is running much better now, so maybe the files were never on the computer ?

My new HJT log reads:

Am I in the clear or is there more junk I need to delete ?
