okay -- I've read all of the articles and FAQs on spyware removal and have run hijackthis logs up the ying yang. Also ran Ad-Aware6 and Spybot-SD (updated both) a number of times until my pc comes up "clean". All goes well until I log on and off of the internet - then I'm reinfected - usually with Brilliant Digital and a varying number of tracking cookies. I'm blocked from trying to erase the BDE folder. I cleaned off a Searchx infection of CWS about a month ago (I think I got it all - had to do some registry editting). Then I got a HomeSearch infection (also had a pop-up element). When it was removed I now have 3 file error messages at startup(can't find share.dll twice and a missing Norton monwow.exe message). Is this stuff related, should I post the most recent HijackThis log? This is my first post - what do I do now? Thanks. :scratchhead:

:ugh: spyware reloads after each internet session; can't get access to BDE folder to view or erase; after HomeSearch was removed I get three missing file errors on each startup -- what's going on? Here's my most recent HijackThis log (after running Ad-Aware and Spybot). Thanks

  • HijackThis ...
    • Double click on "My Computer" to open it.
    • Double click on the local "C-Drive" to open it.
    • Click on "File" => "New Folder" and name it HJT. i.e. The folder will be C:\HJT.
    • Please download HijackThis from any of the following locations:
    • spywareinfo.com
    • subratam.org
    • tools.zerosrealm.com
  • Install/Unzip it into C:\HJT.
  • Only run HijackThis from C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. That way we can ensure that we have the backup files available in the event that they are needed.
  • Run HijackThis, click on scan and wait for the scan to finish.
  • The "Scan" button will change to "Save Log", click on it and simply press "Save" on the window that will appear.
  • Notepad will open with a copy of the log.
    • Click on "Edit" => "Select All".
    • Click on "Edit" => "Copy". This will copy the contents of the Notepad instance to the clipboard.
  • Please post your entire log here for analysis.

What files are missing in those error messages?

"Can't find Shell.dll" pops up twice, then a norton file "monwow.exe" shows as wrong path or missing from library. Still can't get access to BDE folder and Brilliant Digital keeps showing up on Ad-Aware search.

As for your Shell.dll issue, try this:

- Right-click the Start button, and choose 'Explore'.
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab.
- Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
- UNcheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
- UNcheck "Hide file extensions for known file types"
- Click Yes to confirm.
- Click OK.

Now navigate to:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\Shell.dll <--file and right click it.
Choose copy from the menu.
Now go back one folder to:
C:\WINDOWS\system32 <-- folder and click on an empty spot in the right hand pane. Then right click there and select paste from the menu.

Now go back another folder to:
C:\WINDOWS <-- folder and do the paste thing again.
(click on an empty spot in the right hand pane. Then right click there and select paste from the menu.)

Close Explorer.

For the monwow.exe youll have to reinstall Norton Clean Sweep. Or unzip and paste the file Ive attached, to this directory C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton CleanSweep

to uninstall Brilliant Digital's software

1. In the Windows Control Panel, select an option called "Add/Remove Programs." One of the options will be "b3d Projector." Highlight this and click the "Change/Remove" button.

You may get a message that the uninstall has been successful. Search your computer for a "BDE" folder, which most likely will be found in the "WinNT" or "Windows" directory. In this folder will be a file called "bdeclean.exe". Run this to finish the first part of the process. Delete the BDE folder.

Caution: An unrelated piece of software called Borland Database Engine also creates a BDE directory. If you think you may have this software installed, or if there is any confusion whatsoever, do not delete this directory.

2. In the "Temp" directory (this will normally be found inside the "Windows" or "WinNT" directory) is a folder called "Brilliant." This contains many files. Delete the entire folder.

3. After performing steps 1 and 2, you will need to locate and remove some additional Brilliant Digital files that have been placed in critical system-level computer directories. CAUTION: Deleting the wrong files could interfere with the normal functioning of your computer. These files will most likely be in the "WindowsSystem" or "WinNTSystem32" folder:

bdedownloader.dll
bdedata2.dll
bdefdi.dll
bdeinsta2.dll
bdeinstall.exe
bdesecureinstall.cab
bdesecureinstall.exe
bdeverify.exe
bdeverify.dll

Delete these files.

b3dProjector doesn't show up in add/remove (I think I already did this a while back). Nothing is in any of the Temp files listed. There is a BDE directory in c:/program files that has two subdirectories: /b3dlogo and /movies. I can't open or erase either directory ("file is write protected or in use"). I searched the hard drive for BDE and only found files in the Ad-Aware quarantine ( including all of the files listed). Every time I run AdAware it refinds a Brilliant Digital virus. Suggestions? Thanks
