I've run Adaware and Spybot and still have about:blank popping up.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Thanks
Chad

Hi ltgriseau,

Your service packs are out of date. Please go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install ALL critical updates.

Next, hold down the Ctrl & Shift keys on your keyboard, then tap the Esc key. This will open Task Manager. Click the Processes tab and find Copy web chin.exe. Right click it and select End Process. Click Yes to the warning message.

Then, Run hijackthis again, click Scan. Check the boxes next to these entries. Then close all windows except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to 'Fix checked'.

Configure your computer to show hidden files.

Then reboot your computer in safe mode and delete the following folder:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\DRAWCO~1

Reboot your computer into normal mode.

Now, create a folder on your desktop called PV. Then download this zip.
http://tools.zerosrealm.com/pv.zip

Please unzip it to that PV folder on your desktop. It will not work if you run it from inside the zip.

After unzipped, open the pv folder, make sure an Internet Explorer window is open or minimized and double click on the runme.bat file.

A DOS window will open. Please select option 2 for Internet Explorer dll's by typing 2 and then pressing enter.

Notepad will open with a log in it. Please copy and paste the log into this post, along with an updated hijackthis log.

Thank you very much for helping me, OSC. I apologize for the delay - I was having trouble installing the updates.

Hi ltgriseau,

Looking good. Just a few more things left. Uninstall MyWeb from Add/Remove Programs.

Then, run hijackthis again, click Scan. Check the boxes next to these entries. Then close all windows except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to 'Fix checked'.

O4 - Startup: MyWebSearch Email Plugin.lnk = C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\MWSOEMON.EXE

O4 - Global Startup: MyWebSearch Email Plugin.lnk = C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\MWSOEMON.EXE

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsear...html?p=ZRxdm185

O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://imgfarm.com/i...etup1.0.0.8.cab

Reboot your computer, run hijackthis again and post a fresh log back into this thread.

Hi ltgriseau,

You are welcome! I am happy to help. :D

Run hijackthis again, click Scan. Check the boxes next to these entries. Then close all windows except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to 'Fix checked'.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmd] "C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe" /server

You can also optionally fix these. They are not required to run at startup and are generally thought of as resource hogs. Again, these do NOT need to be fixed, but removing them should make your system run a tad faster:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot <---adds the RealPlayer icon in the system tray and provides reminders of updates for the player

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install <----Associated with the newer versions of nVidia graphics cards drivers. Allows you to immensely improve desktop layouts by setting preferences and optimizations. However, this isn't necessary for the operation of your system

That should do it! Here's some light reading for prevention.

Protection - download and install:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacools...areblaster.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
http://www.staff.uiu...rce.htm#IESPYAD

Both are very small free programs that you run once, and then just occasionally to check for updates.

Make sure you have the latest critical updates and make sure you check back often for new updates. This will help prevent some of this stuff from getting on your PC.
http://v4.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

And also see So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hi OSC,
I think I've covered everything but there's still something left I can't get rid of.
I am getting MS Internet Explorer opeing automatically with ads. The most recent being for @eblocs. This page is always coming up as well: http://69.20.62.53/yyy3.html. I've run Ad-aware and it keeps catching files from a vendor "VX2.betterinternet" some of which include aamparse.dll, 6go4svc.dll, 6po4svc.dll. Ad-aware has trouble cleaning these dll's and they keep coming back.

I've enclosed the latest HijackThis log. Do you see anyting else wrong? Let me know if you'd like a log of the dll's through the PV program.

Thanks again
Chad

Hi ltgriseau,

Wow, you had the CoolWebSearch parasite (which we cleaned) and now have the Look2Me parasite. This one does not show up in a hijackthis log, so the only signs of it are pop-ups. And this info that you gave us was key:

I've run Ad-aware and it keeps catching files from a vendor "VX2.betterinternet" some of which include aamparse.dll, 6go4svc.dll, 6po4svc.dll. Ad-aware has trouble cleaning these dll's and they keep coming back.

That is a clear sign your computer has the Look2Me infection. So let's get started cleaning it.

Download this utility from this site and save it to your desktop:
http://tools.zerosre...m/VX2Finder.exe

Once downloaded, double click the Vx2Finder.exe file on your desktop, then click the Click to Find Vx2.BetterInternet button. Click the Make Log button, copy and paste that log back into this thread.

You also have a new entry in your log. Run hijackthis again, click Scan. Check the boxes next to these entries. Then close all windows except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to 'Fix checked'.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

OSC,
When starting the computer now, Windows goes through the usual start-up and seems to open and ready to run, but then a Windows error message appears just long enough to read "run a DLL as an APP"...and then the computer crashes to the blue screen of death:
STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

I've tried starting it in Safe Mode but the same crash occurs.

Any ideas?

Chad

I've finally logged into Windows (debugging mode) and run Adaware. It found the usual VX2 and also zestyfind and a Virtumundo (inetadpt.dll).

I hope this helps.

Hi ltgriseau,

Well, that isn't good. :( We only got a report with Vx2Finder; we didn't make any changes to the operating system, so I'm pretty sure Vx2Finder didn't cause the problem.

I will need some more details about that error if I'm going to try and help with it. Hopefully, XP wrote an event back to the Event Viewer so we can get more details about the error. Go to the Event Viewer (right click My Computer > Manage). Expand the Event Viewer folder and go to the System folder. Now scroll to the approx. date and time this error happened. The event will likely have a red X next to it, if it's even listed. If you dont see it there, open the application folder and look for it in there.

Once you find it, double click it to open it. You'll see a little button (which looks like the copy button). Click that button, which will copy the event to the clipboard and paste it into this thread.

We might as well continue with the Vx2Finder fix. Run Vx2Finder.exe again and click the Click to Find Vx2.BetterInternet button again. Place check marks next to each file and click the Delete these Files button. Click OK to each confirmation message. In this case, you might get a message that 1 or 2 cannot be deleted (might not since the Guardian Key is empty).

Click the Open regedit button. Highlight the Guardian... line in the left column, right click it and choose Security/permissions. You'll get another window with advanced. Uncheck the lower box with inheritable permissions. Click ok and then choose remove on the following security prompt. Restart computer.

After a restart, double click VX2Finder.exe again, click the Click to Find Vx2.BetterInternet button again. Place a checkmark next to the remaining file(s) and click the Delete these Files button. Then, click the User Agent$ button to remove the registry entry.

Click the Open regedit button again. Highlight the Guardian... line in the left column, right click it and choose Security/permissions. You'll get another window with advanced. Place a check mark in the lower box with inheritable permissions. Close the registry editor.

Click the Guardian.reg key and Yes to the confirmation. This deletes that Guardian Key in the registry.

Click the Click to Find Vx2.BetterInternet button again and you should get a clean log of blank values. If it looks different than this, then click the Make Log button and post the contents:

A clean log looks like this:

Files Found---

Guardian Key--- is called:

User Agent String---

Finally, click the Restore Policy button to restore the Debug policy altered in the look2Me installation, hten reboot your computer when prompted to.

OSC,

Below are just a few of the application errors and another VX2 log. I got as far as deleting the 3 files but cannot find the Open regedit button in the VX2 software. The buttons I have are Make Log, Restore Policy, User Agent$, & Guardian.reg.

Thanks
Chad

The files in the error logs:
ahlui.dll
6uo4svc.dll

Are both Look2Me files.
These files change there name every reboot to a new one, so you may see many.

A couple of questions for you:

-Did you just run VX2Finder, or did you try and use the "Fix" with it by checking off files it detected?

-Do you know if your User logon, has Administrator Rights? (check , Control Panel, Users, see if yours says Administrator)

-Do you know how to enter Safe Mode? (While Rebooting, press F8 a bunch of times before you see the Windows Logo displayed)
Enter the menu in Safe Mode.

-Is your system stable enough to run the VX2Finder fix in it's entirety without crashing?

Once the key file listed in the Guardian Reg key is removed, you should have no more problems.

Option^Explicit / OSC,
Windows will load up now OK. These errors occured before deleting the files found by the VX2finder. I followed OSC's instructions from May 23rd (download VX2finder, get log, and remove WtoolsA.exe) and the next time my wife started the computer is when it crashed. I was able to get it running (debugging mode, safe mode did not work - it crashed too) and run VX2finder and deleted the files found per OSC's May25th reply. I will continue with OSC's instructions but I'm not sure where to change the permissions on the Guardian key (I don't have the Open Regedit button referred to).

Allaboutsearching is back - do these parasites work together? We removed this before.

Thanks
Chad

OSC,
I found the Guardian key through the usual Run...Regedit...and it opened directly to the Guardian key under the Winlogon folder. I continued with your instructions to a clean VX2Finder log. I've run Ad-Aware and Spybot to clean the remaining files. I think I'm clean now...hopefully.

Here is my latest Hijackthis log. Please let me know if you see anything else (O2/O3-Globalmeow.dll ???, download.websearch...O16-QDow_AS2.cab???)

Thanks again for your patience and help
Chad

Hi ltgriseau,

I don't see allaboutsearching in your log. Did you clean it already??

Run hijackthis again, click Scan. Check the boxes next to these entries. Then close all windows except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to 'Fix checked'.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1FC94DC7-8BEC-1C4C-A496-CEEE69D5AAD1} - C:\PROGRA~1\MEMOST~1\Global meow.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
<---Not needed. MSWorks Update Detection. MS Picture It! (versions 7 to current) use this automatic update feature during the log on process.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime <----Not needed. Adds the Quicktime icon into the system tray

Reboot your computer, run hijackthis again and post a fresh log. Also post an updated Vx2Finder log.

Hi ltgriseau,

Hurrrray!! Clean log and clean of Look2Me. Terrific job.

Here's some light reading for prevention.

Download and install:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacools...areblaster.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Both are very small free programs that you run once, and then just occasionally to check for updates.

Make sure you have the latest critical updates and make sure you check back often for new updates. This will help prevent some of this stuff from getting on your PC.

And also see So how did I get infected in the first place?

Thank you OSC and SpywareInfo for your valuable support and help.
This is very much appreciated when it is difficult to get consistent technical support now a-days, especially when we use computers on a daily basis.

Chad
