Windows 2000 - two system with similar symptoms.

Symptoms:
CWShredder at startup warns that a variant - CWS.Smartsearch.2 is present but advises that it will still run and then starts up with random charaters in the title bar.

The CPU meter is pinned at 100%, task manager shows CWShredder flips between running and Not responing and CWShredder does not complete the scan. then I have to use task manager to shut down.

In Safe mode CWSHredder runs (slowly) to completion and reports that the system is clean.

Spybot S&D and Ad-aware do not find anything.

Any suggestions will be most welcome.

Thanks,

-M-

In some cases there is a trojan causing this behaviour of CWShredder.

Download The Cleaner and let it do a scan. Please save the log as we are interested what trojans cause this.

Thereafter try CWShredder again, preferably in Safe Mode.
Also when fixing with CWShredder have no programs running that monitor changes in browser pages, like Spywareguard.

If CWShredder still does not finish properly, post a Hijack This log in Forum Malware Removal.

Thank you Winskonst.
I'll follow your suggestion.
You also anticipated another question I've
been meaning to ask regarding turning off other monitoring progs.
Regards,

Hi Winskonst,
It looks like The Cleaner is not available as a trial version ? so wishing to save a penny or two I ran Housecall on one of the aflicted systems and A2 on the other (Both have same symptoms) Neither prgram found any malware.

I'm surprised that there aren't more postings by other users of CWShredder that have had this problem?
Thanks

A specialized trojan scanner is for this symptom better than just a virusscanner.
Also consider Trojanhunter.
Did the Cleaner come up with anything?

In the old forum Coolwebsearch there are more postings on this issue.
