Found a ~ (tilde) icon on the desktop of several systems. When opened it with notepad there was a lot of garbage, but there was also some user names and e-mail address etc.
does anyone know anything about this icon. What program (spyware ?) install it or where it comes from. I've searched all over but I can't find any information.

Thanks in advance

Nothing to worry atout.
The file appearing on your desktop with the filename ~, commonly known as a tilde, is a backup of your Windows Address Book.

You might want to have a look Here. for some more information about this.

Hey, I'm not sure if this is related or not, but a friend at work is having a problem with his PC. He just started using a program, jv16PowerTools, and he's afraid he deleted a file, or files, that has messed-up his address book in OE. His problem; he opens OE, then his address book, but all of his addresses are gone. He tried to re-enter the addresses, but gets a message window stating "this address is already entered", or something to that effect. After reading this thread, I'm starting to think his problem may be related to Windows Updates. Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be? Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks to all for the ~ information.
I just encountered the shortcut this morning and was concerned.
Thanks to nasdaq for the link. It explaned everything.

Does anyone know about a toolbar called "roadthatgrid"?
It appears as a toolbar choice and comes up looking like a MSN tool.

Thanks - Mark

markstan, I suggest that you start your own thread, preferably in the malwre removal forum. It will receive more attention there.

dave38;

Thanks for the suggestion. I will do that.
My main intent was to thank the group for the ~ info and thought of the toolbar deal at the last minute.

Thanks again.
