Well boy do I really feel stupid. In my furver to kill a sleuce of pop ups, I ctrl-alt-delete and [enter]ed my way into accepting an offer to make a website my default browser. Now my Internet Explorer is hijacked. Please help!

I've done a lot of browsing online for a solution, and though many have posted about my specific problem, I figured since I'm a novice at this, I should go ahead and request for help before actually doing something.

I've downloaded, installed, updated and ran Ad-Aware 6.0 and fixed all relevant problems. I did not remove New.Net, but please tell me if I should have.

I've downloaded, installed, updated and ran Spybot S&D and fixed all problems.

Here is my Hijackthis log:

I just realized I didn't include what problems I was having exactly with IE.

IE's been hijacked by some code that keeps resetting the default home page as soon as I change or soon after, even when I change it in the registry.

Also about every ten minutes IE will launch on it's own and try to go to some website called acculoader, but I quarantined (on my own, rather than through a program) a dll file called mshp.dll that seemed to be telling the browser where to go. Removing this dll file from the WINDOWS directory seems to cause the browers to just stop before going anywhere.

It also creates a file called dl.html in the Windows directory, which is what trys to launch and access the acculoader website.

I recognize the symptoms from other people's problems in other forums and topics, but as I said before, I'd rather play it safe than go ahead and follow directions not directed specifically at me.

Thanks!

Wow, this thing is pretty nasty. It keeps launching itself whenever I have an internet connection. I also have a suspicion it's overloading and killing my full screen programs, but that I can't prove.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To start cleaning up your computer, please download CWShredder
This was written to deal with Coolweb and all its variants.

Download and run the program. Let it fix everything it finds, and reboot.

Run Hijack this again, and post a fresh log so we can deal with whatever is left.

Thanks a lot so far! I've downloaded CWShredder, ran it, killed whatever it found (3 items), and rebooted. Here is my updated log:

I noticed on my log file that it says a New.Net dll file is missing. After reading up on it I decided to go through the add/remove programs dialogue and uninstalled New.Net. Hopefully this warning about the missing .dll file is just an artifact and will be taken care of when I install and run this copy of Norton System Works that I have.

Or maybe the powers of HijackThis can take care of it?

Is this the sort of thing that will replicate itself onto a server if I access the server via FTP? I've been waiting to do my duties at my job from here because of that concern. Thanks!

I have checked and fixed the lines you have said to in HijackThis, and have entered safe mode and deleted 'wintime.exe.' So far I have not had a pop up launch of IE to the Cool Web Search website. I will post again if I get one.

However, I still cannot change permanently my homepage from what it's currently set to. Every time I've tried, five minutes later it's back to the IP address.

Here is my new HijackThis log, I hope you can help.

YAHOO! I have exorcised the demons!

At mean... I hope... I've umm.... exorcised them. I've at the very least I've exercised them quite a bit.

After reading other fixes to similar problems, and of course after working on the fix given to me in this thread, I decided to go on a whim and re-run HijackThis, fixing the lines that didn't go away from before, and then moved 'system32.dll' out of my windows/system folder and into a quarantine folder.

Well, I tell you what, the problem seems to have disappeared :) I can now change my homepage and the registry looks clear.

But please, because I am just a novice at this, would someone please look over this new HijackThis log and tell me if my system is finally clean?

** Crosses Fingers **

EDIT: OH BY THE WAY... I like my homepage to be blank for IE. So the 'about:blank's are my doing. I seem to remember there being a problem with the IE homepage being set to blank with other Malware, which is why I point this out.

If this new log is clean then Thank you so very much! I wish I could thank all of the people who have helped me, but most of them have been the people writing the programs I've been using and writing the articles and other posts that I've been reading. You guys are doing the world a great service.

Now if only I could find the address of those guys who created Cool Web Search...
