      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.

MXXS5.dll on startup

11 posts in this topic

Installed Spybot S&D, ran it, fixed the red, and posting new highjackthis log. Still have a window that comes up on startup that says something like.... error loading mxxs5.dll the system cannot find the file specified. CWShredder says I have a clean system. Anyone know how to get that mxxs5.dll window to stop coming up?

Hi,

Create a folder via Windows Explorer for HijackThis, then move the file (HijackThis.exe) to that folder. This way any backups created are saved in a legit folder.

1) Restart in Safe Mode (see "How To:" below)

2) Enable Hidden Files (see "How To:" below)

Locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\BXXS5.DLL <--this file (if exists)

C:\WINDOWS\pedwb.exe <--this file

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ELNETT.exe <--this file

DLHelperEXE.exe <--this file

While still in Safe Mode:

Close all open windows, rescan with HijackThis and "Fix checked" the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bxxs5] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\BXXS5.DLL,DllRun

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pedwb] C:\WINDOWS\pedwb.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ELNETT] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ELNETT.exe

O4 - Startup: DLHelperEXE.exe

O9 - Extra button: SideStep (HKLM)

O16 - DPF: {0837121A-6472-43BD-8A40-D9221FF1C4CE} (SideStep IE Inst) - http://www.sidestep.com/get/k46849/sb01f.cab

Restart normally and then ...

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware:

http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

After installing AAW, and before running the program.

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:

Please update the reference file following the instructions here:

http://www.lavahelp.com/howto/updref/index.html

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the "Scanning" button.

Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives".

Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.

Click the "Advanced" button.

Under "Log-file detail", select all options.

Click the "Tweaks" button.

Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:

"Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile" and

"Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:

"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

Please make sure that you activate IN-DEPTH scanning before you proceed.

After the above post a fresh log ...

Ok... I hope I'm doing all this right. I'm not real computer smart. I followed the above directions, except for during the highjack fix, 04 startup dlhelperexe.exe wasnt on the list. (unless i didn't see it) Then, I loaded and installed adaware, but I ran a scan then closed it out because no one told me what to do with all the found files. Here's the new log though.

Hi,

I ran a scan then closed it out because no one told me what to do with all the found files

Click the "Help" [button] left side, basically let Ad-Aware remove everything it finds then reboot. Make sure to update the "Reference file" prior to running Ad-Aware each time.

You can have HijackThis "fix" the below:

Ok... here's the latest log. When I finally get this stuff out, will it come back? Do I need to run CWShredder, Spybot, Adaware, and HiJackThis on some sort of schedule. And if so, how do I know what to fix?

Hi,

Your log looks clean now ... good job!

When I finally get this stuff out, will it come back?

Not if you practice "Safe Hex" ... stay away from questionable downloads, etc.

Do I need to run CWShredder, Spybot, Adaware, and HiJackThis

Yes update and run SpyBot and AWW weekly. However you must remember these are removal tools "after the fact", not prevention tools.

And if so, how do I know what to fix?

For SpyBot fix items marked in red. For AWW let it fix what it detects. When you are not sure, ask first! Both programs have their own support Forums.

I would suggest adding some "Defense" to your system ...

See section: How To: Prevent this from happening again?

Thanks so much for the help! When I run Norton AV these files come up...

ATPartners.dll, bdl24126.exe, prelnsTT.exe, prelnsTT.exe, PREINSTT.EXE, twaintec.dll, and twaintec.dll

When I try to delete them, it comes up delete failed. There is a long process I think that I can go through to get them off. I have to pull each one up on the Norton site to find out how. Is there an easier way to do this? When I run ADAware and Spybot, everything still come up clean. Included a new HJT log just in case. Thank you

Hi,

When I run Norton AV these files come up...

Where are these located? ... most likely either in your browser cache or in the "System Restore" files.

For your browser cache:

How To: Delete the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Note: delete the cache folders, they will be rebuilt on startup.

For System Restore: (see "How To" below)

Basically turn off "System Restore" and reboot.

Run a full system (AV) scan, and turn on "System Restore"

Then create a new "Restore Point".

[more info]

Antivirus Tools Cannot Clean Infected Files in the _Restore Folder

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=263455 (ME)

Also have HijackThis "fix" the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

One file is here...

C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN_32

and I found preinstt and twaintec in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\THI38B1.TMP

I don't have a boot disk or anything like that for cleaning the cache.

Hi,

One file is here... C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN_32

Which file? ... cause that's a legit folder.

Flush System Restore again (turn it off)

I don't have a boot disk or anything like that for cleaning the cache

hmmm ... Restart in Safe mode (see: "How To" below)

Open Windows Explorer to:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

Delete the entire contents of that folder.

Restart normally ... run a full system scan with your AV.

Reboot and enable System Restore and create a new Restore Point.
