I've run Spybot and Ad-aware 6.0 in that order, rebooting after each one. Now I'm trying Hijack This. Here is my "log"- no browsers were running.

Hi Albuqwirke
You have a CWS variant infection.
Download the latest version of
CWShredder http://www.spywarein.../cwshredder.zip

Then boot into Safe Mode http://service1.syma...001052409420406

Run CwShredder and click "Fix".
Let CWShredder do its thing and reboot.

Next run HijackThis again and check the items listed below. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked":
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SearchBar.htm
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {224530A0-C9CB-4AEE-9C0F-54AC1B533211} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Soundmx] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\soundmx.exe

This next one is optional. It is regarded as a spyware product. You can get an alternative clocksync. You can remove ClockSync from add/remove programs also.
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ClockSync] C:\PROGRA~1\CLOCKS~1\Sync.exe /q

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WNSC] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wnsintsv.exe
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O19 - User stylesheet: (file missing)

Next, please find and delete the following bolded file/s...
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\soundmx.exe<---file only
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wnsintsv.exe<---file only

Some of the above may be hidden files.
Make sure that in Folder Options > View hidden and operating system files are set to show:
How to Show Hidden/System Files
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Reboot again into normal mode and post a fresh HJT log.

OKay, I've followed your recommended steps. Hopefully, I'm now to the road to recovery.

Several of the items you told me to delete didn't show up when I ran Hijack This after CwShredder, so can I assume that it cleaned them out? Also the .exe files you asked me to delete we not found on my harddrive.

That said... here is my fresh HJT log.

Any advice on how I can keep viruses like this off my computer? I try to be careful about what sites I visit, but maybe there are other steps I should be taking??

THANKS!!!

Thats looking a lot better :)

There are a few start up entries (04`s) that are not nessasary to have running at start up, (eg. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Portfolio] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WksSb.exe /AllUsers), but these are optional fixes.
You can check your 04`s in the start up list here:
http://members.shaw.ca/austin.powers/
Or the Task List here:
http://www.answersthatwork.com/
You can then decide for yourself what you need running or not :)

For future protection I`d recommend you download and install:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
SpywareGuard offers real time hijackprotection
http://www.javacools...sgdownload.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
http://www.staff.uiu...rce.htm#IESPYAD

All are very small free programs that you run once, and then just occasionally to check for updates.

And also see
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Finally don`t forget to install ALL critical updates required for your system.
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Good Luck.
