in the process of trying to scour away a highjacker that put me in ai.find purgatory, i did something quite stupid. essentially, i erased a file through hijackthis that looked something like this:

02 - BHO:(no name) - {0000000000000000-00000-0000-0000-000000000000} - C:\windows......mxcdsm.dll

not too sure about the actual file but it was a BHO and evidentally it controlled the cd-rom directory.

during start-up, (windows 98) before the desktop loads, a window opens that states:

Can't find CD-ROM Directory

Please select DirectX 5.0 setup path

and then asks for an .exe file.

i looked in a few places but i'm in a bit over my head, as you can see. any sort of insight into this matter would be hugely appreciated.

quick update:

ran scanreg/restore from a command prompt (after a safe mode start-up failed.) picked a registry from a week ago, just to be safe. the results were successful. thank god for automatic registry back-ups!

thanks for anyone who read (and didn't scoff too much.)
