Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7
How to Remove CoolWebSearch with CoolWeb Shredder <= Please click on this link for instructions on how to download and use CoolWebSearch Shredder which will help remove a CWS infection on your computer. Make sure you close all programs and windows before running it and be sure to click on the "Fix" button.

Run HijackThis and delete the following if still present:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mypoiskovik.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://mypoiskovik.com/index.htm
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://mypoiskovik.com/index.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://mypoiskovik.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://mypoiskovik.com/index.htm
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D848A3CA-0BFB-4DE0-BA9E-A57F0CCA1C13} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [8] C:\documents and settings\brian\local settings\temp\8.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ekfpixaudio] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ekfpixaudio.exe
O4 - Global Startup: WINLOGIN.EXE
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150...ip/RdxIE601.cab

The following are optional to remove as they are resource hogs or as otherwise indicated:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe <= From soundblaster, if you are not adding more users to your system, this can be removed as the settings are already complete.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RoxioDragToDisc] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy Media Creator 7\Drag to Disc\DrgToDsc.exe" <= I have this program and drag to disk, when it actually works, causes a lot if system hangs. I removed it to clear up resources and I have no problem creating CD's, DVD's etc
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?

Please cleanup temporary files etc. Browse to and select all contents in the following folders (Windows may be WINNT or WIN98 etc.), and delete (Make sure to delete the sub-folders, but not the Temp folders themselves!):
  • C:\Windows\Temp (all contents)
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files (all contents) <=This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp (all contents)
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files(all contents)
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp (all contents)
  • Empty your "Recycle Bin".
  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\ekfpixaudio.exe
  • WINLOGIN.EXE <= You will have to do a search for this file. Do not confuse it wil the legitimate winlogon.exe file.
Reboot again and log in normally, repost a new HijackThis log into this message for further review.

Just saw your reply - Delete thebest.com as well - The coolwebsearch fix should clean that up as it is a know CWS site.

I have seen numerous referrences to mypoiskovik and in most cases, one of the following files is the cause:
  • c:\windows\cvchost.exe
  • winlogin.exe
  • c:\windows\dllhelp.exe
If you have any of these files, delete them.

In HijackThis delete:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mypoiskovik.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://mypoiskovik.com/index.htm
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://mypoiskovik.com/index.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://mypoiskovik.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://mypoiskovik.com/index.htm

Then ... After you have run both programs, reboot and post another log.

The more I read about mypoiskovik, the more annoyed I become as it seems to be getting on par with the annoying CWS infection. I will keep reading up on it but in the meantime, can you please do the following:
  • Click on "Start"
  • Click on "Run".
  • Type in cmd and click on "Okay".
  • This will bring up a command window - Type in ren c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.old and press "Enter".
  • Go to MVPS.org and follow the instructions to replace your HOSTS file with the one that they provide.
  • Remove the entries again in HijackThis (I assume you are very familiar with how to do that by now :) ).
Post another log when you are done and let's hope it stays gone and in the meantime I will do some more research for you.

Can you also do a search on your computer for a file named IEengine.exe - That is, supposedly, the cause of the files being restored in the registry - This file needs to be deleted.

I have done a fair bit of research and have compiled my own "REMOVAL" procedure. Please follow the instructions and be sure to let me know if this works ...

mypoiskovik.com can infect your system in many ways. To remove it, please follow the procedure listed below:
  • Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".
  • Run hijackthis and put a check next to these entries and then FIX checked after ALL other windows are closed (including this one):
  • In HijackThis, make sure that none of the following entries are present, if they are, remove them as well:
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IEengine] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEengine.exe
    • O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dllhelp] c:\windows
  • RESTART your computer in Safe Mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?
  • Find and delete these files or folders:
    • C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEengine.exe <= File
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogin.exe <= This file, NOTICE the spelling. Please watch that you do not delete winlogon.exe (that is a legit file in the same directory)
    • winlogon.exe in any location other that c:\windows\system32. <= windows may be winnt. win98 etc, depending on your operating system. c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe is a legitimate, system file that MUST NOT be deleted. One of the more common places for winlogon.exe to hide is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs <= Be sure to check this location.
    • m.exe
    • dlltemp.exe
    • dllhelp.exe
    • Some files may be harder to spot (As mypoiskovik randomly changes te file names) so proceed with the following only if the infection was not found in any of the previous steps:
      • Click on "Start" => "Search" => "For files or Folders" => Search for "All Files and Folders" => Type in *.exe *.dll => Under "When was it modified" => "Specify Date" => Date of suspected infection through Today.
      • Hit search and wait for a while, proably at least 1/2 hour, depending on your CPU speed.
      • This will give you a list of every insidious .exe file and .dll file that may be trojans infecting your computer.
      • Look at the files and see what looks suspicious. DO NOT delete anything is you are at all unsure as you may have valid file names listed. Post the list back here for us to review and make recommendations.
  • While still in safe mode would you please run CoolWeb Shredder one more time and let it FIX all problems.
  • RESTART back in Normal mode. Don't open a browser yet.
  • Instead, access your "Internet options" via "Control Panel" and under the "Programs" tab, "Reset Web Settings".
  • Under the "General" tab => "Delete files" and "Reset home page".
  • Post back a fresh Hijackthis log.

Thank goodenss - I was starting to think I was losing my touch :)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

Just out of curiosity - What was the file infecting your system that caused it to come back?

im pretty sure it was ieengine, and/or winlogin. i had to remove it each time to get rid of mypoiskovik. also when i goto safe mode and run cwshredder, it always removes CWS.msconfig
