My family noticed they were not getting any e-mail on our home computer (I use my work-supplied and maintained laptop which is the only way I can communicate with you now). Then they noticed that they couldn't access any internet sites. Every attempt was re-directed to a page identified as "C:\DocumentsanSettings\[user name]\LocalSettings\Temp\SoftWareSpam.htm#" followed by the address of the site we were actually trying to reach. This page has a search box and an internet index imbedded in the middle of a standard "The page cannot be displayed" page. Neither the search box nor the index lead anywhere.

After verifying with our ISP that there was nothing wrong with our internet connection (my laptop goes through the same router), we purchased and ran SpySweeper (hadn't found this forum yet). After that, one of my son's has been able to access certain sites and send/receive e-mails through his user account. But there was still a search and index bar at the top of whatever page is displayed (non-functional), and the address for his desired home page had the following in front of it "http://searchexe.com...gh/index.html". We were not able to access the internet or send/receive e-mail through any of the three other user accounts on our home computer.

I've now downloaded (through my son's user account) and run Ad-Adware, but I'm still in the same place. Limited and corrupted access through my son's user account, and no access through the other three accounts. I was going to download and run Spybot S&D, but when I tried, I got diverted back to the same old page.

Hope someone can help. I have limited computer skills, so any instructions will need to be explicit. My logfile from Hijack This is below. Thanks in advance.

Hi dhertzel

First you need to place HiJack This into a folder of itís own.
Go into your documents and make a new folder and name it HJT or something you like. Then unzip HJT into your new folder. If you ever need to restore an item you may not have that option, or be able to find them from a temp dir.
Close all browsers and rerun HJT. Check and click fix checked for the following-

Restart your computer in safe mode and delete-
C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools <=Folder

C:\DocumentsanSettings\[user name]\LocalSettings\Temp\SoftWareSpam.htm#"
Then empty all of your system and internet temp files.

Darn, I was doing good until I got to the part about restarting in safe mode. I looked up how to do this in the computer's Help and Support, but the instructions didn't match what happened when I tried to follow them! After restarting, I was supposed to press F8 when I saw the message "Please select the operating system to start". Well, that message never appeared. Also, this new fangled Windows software -- XP Home Edition -- doesn't even use the terminology "Shut Down". It says "Turn off computer". Any idea how I get into safe mode? I checked to see if all of the work I'd done in Hijack This had been lost -- I cleaned all four user accounts because I figured I had to -- and looks like all the problem files were back.

Thanks.

Also, I noticed that backup files had been created in one of my user accounts after I ran the Hijack This fix. I deleted the files, but when I ran the HJT scan again, all of the files were back.

You need to tap F8 constantly (example: count one-tap two-tap) and choose safe mode. Delete those files and then post a fresh log.

Thanks, Ol Tramp. I didn't receive an e-mail notification that you had responded, so that's why I'm so late in following up. I've followed your instructions as best I could, and a new HJT log is pasted below. Still having the same problems with internet access. Thanks for your continued assistance.

Hello out there. We were making progress, but I've still got problems and no answer to my last post for two weeks. I understand the limitations of this process. Are there computer fixers that I can hire? Thanks again.

Sorry but I did not receive email notice either. Post a fresh log and we will go from there.

And I didn't get notified of your last posting (aside from weekends, my availability to be proactive about this is very limited). Well, glad you're still with me. A current log is copied below. I was able to access the forum directly from the infected computer for my last posting, but, tonight, when I tried to access, I kept getting the message that says my McAfee Privacy Service is intercepting adult content. Somehow, I don't think it's really the McAfee software. Anyway, looking forward to your response, and continued thanks for your assistance. Just to be clear, I can't access the internet at all from three of the four user accounts on the infected computer. We can access most sites through my son's user account.
