Our computer got hijacked big time a few days ago, and disabled Internet Explorer, substituting Lycos Sidesearch and some other crap instead. After running Norton, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and downloading SpySweeper and running that, we managed to get our computer back under our control.

However, every time we log on, Zone Alarm alerts us that something called Sear1 is attempting to connect to the Internet. It also flashes across the screen briefly before disappearing. We can't seem to find this thing to get rid of it.

And in something that may or may not be related, the computer is constantly trying to dial-up on its own. Sometimes even as we're powering down the computer, it will suddenly begin logging on to the 'net. I had hoped running all the spyware programs would clear it up, but it started happening again today.

Here is our HijackThis log:

Hi,
First do a Purity (trojan) scan uninstall
http://www.puritysca.../uninstall.html

1) Restart in Safe Mode (see "How To:" below)
2) Enable Hidden Files (see "How To:" below)

Locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\2_0_1browserhelper2.dll <--this file
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\rdes.exe <--this file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wtssvcc.exe <--this file

While still in Safe Mode:
Close all open windows, rescan with HijackThis and "Fix checked" the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {83DE62E0-5805-11D8-9B25-00E04C60FAF2} - C:\WINDOWS\2_0_1browserhelper2.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ilot] C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\rdes.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WAPI] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wtssvcc.exe
O16 - DPF: {2048B51E-8D74-4762-82CE-B48CF545EEEA} (CAX Object) - http://accu.accuload...aler/us_cax.cab

Restart normally and then ...

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:
Please update the reference file following the instructions here:
http://www.lavahelp....dref/index.html

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the "Scanning" button.
Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
Click the "Tweaks" button.

Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:
"Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile" and
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.
Please make sure that you activate IN-DEPTH scanning before you proceed.

After the above post a fresh log ...

Hi, Mike -

Thanks for your help. I followed your instructions to the letter and this is the resulting log, but I couldn't find a few things you suggested I remove while in Safe Mode and after Enabling Hidden Files. I couldn't find:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\rdes.exe <--this file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wtssvcc.exe <--this file

or

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ilot] C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\rdes.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WAPI] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wtssvcc.exe

Does this mean I already got rid of them, or are they supposed to be there and they're not, or have they disappeared somewhere deep inside our computer?

Regardless, this is the fresh log, as requested:

Hi,
The Purity scan uninstall may have removed a few of those files you couldn't find.

Your log looks clean now ... good job!

I would suggest adding some "Defense" to your system ...
See section: How To: Prevent this from happening again?
