Hello Masters,

I have been the unfortunate recipient of a browser hijacking, apprently by "your-searcher.com". Can you please toss me a few pieces of advice?

I followed the directions on your site, read everything that I thought was relevant, and came to a stall at the part which describes BHO's. I have identified all the BHO's using your lists, exept one.....the one that ends in "iehr.dll". Your instructions asked to post if a BHO is not identified. I hope I did this right.

I have attached the HJT log.....can you please give me a hand with this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS. I don't know why, but the saved/posted log is longer than what was visible on-screen.

Hi,
First thing to do is ...

Reconfigure Windows Explorer to show Hidden Files:
Open the Windows Explorer Folder Options - View [tab]:

Scroll down to the "Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Display the contents of system folders".

Scroll down to the "Hidden Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Show hidden files and folders", Ok the prompt
Uncheck: "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Uncheck: "Hide protected operating system files" Ok the Prompt, click Apply

Click the "Apply to all Folders" button. Close Windows Explorer.

Important! Create a folder via Windows Explorer for HijackThis, then move the file (HijackThis.exe) to that folder. This way any backups created are saved in a legit folder.

Close all open windows, except for HijackThis place a check in each of the following:
Then click "Fix checked".

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://your-searcher.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://your-searcher.com/index.htm
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://your-searcher.com/index.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://your-searcher.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://your-searcher.com/index.htm
O2 - BHO: ie - {2FF5573C-0EB5-43db-A1B2-C4326813468E} - c:\windows\iehr.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IEengine] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEengine.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk = ?
O16 - DPF: {11120607-1001-1111-1000-110199901123} - ms-its:mhtml:file://C:\foo.mht!http://81.211.105.37...m::/on-line.exe

Then reboot, on restart, restart in Safe Mode (see "How To" below)

Locate and delete the following:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEengine.exe <--this file
c:\windows\iehr.dll <--this file

Restart normally and then ...

Note: O16 - DPF: {11120607-1001-1111-1000-110199901123}
The above indicates an unpatched machine, visit Windows Update and install all the Critical Updates.

After the above post a fresh log ...

WinHelp2002,

Thank you very much!! Every instruction you gave me was dead-on, and there is no longer any trace (so far) of the "your-searcher.com" browser!!!

Only two minor things that probably mean nothing: when I started WinXP in safe mode, I did find and delete the "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEengine.exe", but the "c:\windows\iehr.dll" was nowhere to be found. Maybe HJT whacked it during the fix?

Also the "O16 - DPF: {11120607-1001-1111-1000-110199901123}" was not listed. I had downloaded all critical updates last night, and maybe it finally installed"?

Anyway, thanks again for the expert help, and excellent instructions. I only wish the average software instructions received with software were as good as yours!!!! :-)

I'm not sure how this whole forum thing works...if you are a member....or work for the site.....but I will sleep easier tonight knowing I don't have to reload the Op system tomorrow.

Thanks again, for saving me hours of pain!!

Astro,
You're welcome ... glad to see you have resolved your problem.

No I don't "work" here, we all volunteer our time here.

I guess I should have worded things better ...

O16 - DPF: {11120607-1001-1111-1000-110199901123} - ms-its:mhtml:file://C:\foo.mht!http://81.211.105.37...m::/on-line.exe

The above refers to a type of infection that shouldn't happen if the machine is properly updated. Since you updated last night, it must have occured prior to that.

Anyway ... :wave:
