      IE 11 copy/paste problem

      It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

Need help removing "SAVSCAN"

4 posts in this topic

Greetings Spyware eradication Gurus :)

I have a Windows XP system persistently infested with the SAVSCAN parasite.

I have done the following;

  • Read the FAQ ;)
  • Temporarily turned off System Restore, cleared Temporary Internet files, all offline content, cookies & the contents of the Windows "Temp" folder.
  • Applied all Critical Windows Updates.
  • Installed, updated & scanned with Ad-Aware several times, including in safe mode.
  • Installed, updated & scanned with Spybot Search & Destroy several times & have Spybot-SD resident.
  • Installed, updated & enable protection for all items with Spyware Blaster 3.1
  • Manually checked & cleaned HKLM & HKCU run items.
  • Uninstalled Microsoft Java Virtual Machine removed all traces & installed Sun Java in its place.
  • Ran Hijack This & removed several known “bad” entries.
  • Manually checked the "C:\Windows" & "C:\Windows\System32" folders deleting several items missed by the scanners, including "SIAE3123.EXE" & "ATPARTNERS.DLL", etc in Safe Mode Command Prompt Only.

SAVSCAN.EXE returns after every re-boot.

Here is my “Hijack This” log;

SAVSCAN.exe is not a parasite. It is the Auto-Protect service for Norton AntiVirus 2004 under Windows 2000/XP/2003. This service scans files for viruses in the background as and when they are accessed or created. Absolutely essential for the protection of your PC against viruses – Leave alone

You can safely remove ALL O16 entries - Some of them are adware programs. This will not affect the operation of your computer.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

*Smacks forehead* I can’t believe I forgot that! Thanks for jogging my feeble memory PGPhantom! I knew this because I looked it up once before. I think I’m getting it confused with the “Save Now” parasite.

I appreciate the info on IE/Spyad & “SpywareGuard” (I use the others already). Have you seen any conflicts with SpywareGuard & Norton Antivirus 2004 (part of the Norton SystemWorks 2004 Suite)?

So, you can safely remove ALL O16 entries? The person who owns this computer uses Yahoo Messenger which has a couple of the 016 entries & I see Norton & Macromedia in there as well.

I deleted the ones that were unknown & left the following;

O16 - DPF: {166B1BCA-3F9C-11CF-8075-444553540000} (Shockwave ActiveX Control) - http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwa...director/sw.cab

I run spywareguard and Norton - No problems at all. For O16 entries - Leaving them is not a problem and neither is deleting them as they will simply get downloaded the next time you visit the relevant site.
