Hi,
Important! Create a folder via Windows Explorer for HijackThis, then move the file (HijackThis.exe) to that folder. This way any backups created are saved in a legit folder.

First thing to do is ...

Reconfigure Windows Explorer to show Hidden Files:
Open the Windows Explorer Folder Options - View [tab]:

Scroll down to the "Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Display the contents of system folders".

Scroll down to the "Hidden Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Show hidden files and folders", Ok the prompt
Uncheck: "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Uncheck: "Hide protected operating system files" Ok the Prompt, click Apply

Click the "Apply to all Folders" button. Close Windows Explorer.

Start | Run (type) Services.msc

Scroll down to the WinTools for IE service
Highlight, right-click and select: Properties
Select "Service Status" option to "Stop"
Select: "Startup type" set it to "Disabled", click Apply, OK
Close the Services Editor.

Next:

Close all open windows, except for HijackThis place a check in each of the following:
Then click "Fix checked".

O1 - Hosts: 207.36.196.189 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 207.36.196.189 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 207.36.196.189 ieautosearch
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Bakra] C:\WINDOWS\System32\IEHost.exe

Then reboot, on restart, restart in Safe Mode (see "How To" below)

Start | Run (type) Regedit
Navigate to the following location:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services]

Expand the "+Services" key (left pane)
Highlight the "WinTools" key, right-click and select: Delete, Ok the prompt.
close Regedit.

Open Windows Explorer locate and delete the following:

C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools <--this folder
C:\WINDOWS\System32\IEHost.exe <--this file

Restart normally and then ...

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:
Please update the reference file following the instructions here:
http://www.lavahelp....dref/index.html

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the "Scanning" button.
Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
Click the "Tweaks" button.

Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:
"Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile" and
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.
Please make sure that you activate IN-DEPTH scanning before you proceed.

After the above post a fresh log ...

First of all Thank you so much for your help! I'm getting there but there's still a problem somewhere. I've removed quite a bit after multiple scanning via all the various programs available/recommended and some registry edits. I seem to be seeing the AIU Online pop up the most often at this point and on the last AdAware scan it found 2 instances of vx2betterinternet which I removed and rebooted. So this is the most current HiJack this log. Thank you again, your instructions are wonderful!

Hi,

I seem to be seeing the AIU Online pop

I have no idea what that is ... if it pops up again, right-click on the pop-up and select: Properties. Highlight the "URL" and copy and paste that info to your next post.

Download VX2Finder
http://tools.zerosre...m/VX2Finder.exe

Run Vx2Finder click on the Click to find VX2.BetterInternet button.
Then click Make log. Generates: "vx2.log"

Copy and paste the contents of the log into your next reply.

Next:

Start | Run (type) Services.msc

Scroll down to the WinTools for IE service
Highlight, right-click and select: Properties
Select "Service Status" option to "Stop"
Select: "Startup type" set it to "Disabled", click Apply, OK
Close the Services Editor.

Next:

Close all open windows, except for HijackThis place a check in each of the following:
Then click "Fix checked".

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

Then reboot, on restart, restart in Safe Mode (see "How To" below)

Start | Run (type) Regedit
Navigate to the following location:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services]

Expand the "+Services" key (left pane)
Highlight the "WinTools" key, right-click and select: Delete, Ok the prompt.
close Regedit.

Locate and delete the following:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools <--this folder

Restart normally and post a fresh log and "vx2.log" contents.

Ok, the WinTools folder was already gone when I went there this time. This will make the 3rd time I've had to remove WinTools according to direction. Also this time the service was stopped but not disabled. I'm still getting the AIR popup - link is: http://cdn2.adsdk.co...8844a_720v3.gif

I assume we're gonna delete something related to that Vx2.log file? class or something? Thank you so much.

Hi,
Your log is clean now ... good job!

There doesn't appear to be any Vx2 files to remove.
Except for the "User Agent String"

Open VX2Finder again and click on these buttons down the right side:

User Agent
Restore Policy (OK each prompt)

Exit and reboot.

As for the pop-up, most likely it from your browser cache ...

Resize your browser cache, then rebuild the cache folders ...
How To: Delete the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/...02/delcache.htm

Note: resize the cache limit, then completely delete the cache folder.

Then reboot ...

If you still get the pop-ups, install the HOSTS file (see below)
Note: "cdn2.adsdk.com" is targeted in the file ...
