I have been working on cleaning up my computer for days now and have followed all directions I have found to fix it. I have fixed somethings but there is still more in it and I don't know what to remove now. I have run Spybot S&d and Ad-Aware several times and HiJackThis. I can't get rid of About:Blank on my homepage and I have several things(including an ICON marked SEX) that I will remove just to have it appear again after I reboot. Also I am getting disconnected from the internet often and I've never had that problem before. I also keep getting a Windows Warning message stating that my Virtual Memory is too Low ...What does this mean? Here is my HijackThis log. I appreciate your help. Thank You :o)

It is getting much worse each day. I run spybot S&D,Ad-Aware,CWShreader and HijackThis several times a day. This morning I had 58 infected files between the 3 programs that's more than anyother time before. I also get a pop up accu.acculoader.com that changes my screen completely white and I have to Ctl, Alt, Del to get rid of it, sometimes it freezes everything up completely. PLEASE HELP!! Thank you so much. Here is an updated HijackThis log:

Here is my latest HijackThis log. I turned off my system restore the last time that I ran Ad-Aware and Spybot because many of the infected areas that kept coming back after I'd reboot were registery keys and this seems to have helped a few things but I still have problems. Nortons also informed me that I have a virus called PWSteal.Tojan that can't be fixed by Nortons. How do I fix this?

Please create a new directory C:\HJT and move the HijackThis.exe file into that directory and only run it from there. That way we can ensure that we have the backup files available in the event that they are needed.

Uninstall any Delfin or PromulGate product listed in “Add/Remove Programs” in the Control Panel (e.g. Delfin Media Viewer). Also uninstall anything named "Web Rebates".

Run either of these free online virus scans.Download, install and run Tojan Hunter (Trial)

We need to remove a program called "Twain-Tec". To do this, first you need to disable System restore as per the instructions at here . Twiantec.dll is a transponder. HijackThis will detect it as a BHO but it must not be removed using HijackThis. This is because of the remaining registry entries and files which can be dangerous. Instead the following method of removal is preferable and complete:
Go to "Add/Remove Programs" => Uninstall "Twain-Tech". Reboot the computer to SAFE mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?. Delete twaintech.dll and twaintec.ini If twaintech.dll is in use, then you would need to rename it, reboot the computer, and then delete it.

Download and run this Peper Trojan uninstaller from here.. Once it's finished downloading, and while remaining online, double click it and let it install and run until it's finished. Run it a second time, before rebooting and still online. Reboot, run the peper removal time one final time

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":

The following are optional as they are resource hogs or as otherwise indicated:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WT GameChannel] C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\GameChannel.exe <= This task consumes Internet bandwidth unnecessarily and unless you use your PC primarily for games, you should disable it. It is not needed to run your games. Another way to disable it is by right-clicking the Wild Tangent icon in the System Tray, taking OFF all ticks, and clicking OK. Other issues with this task include problems with Internet access as a result of the task crashing in the background, and Internet Explorer crashes. If you do not play any Wild Tangent games, you should consider de-installing anything "Wild Tangent" in the "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?

The following FILES, DIRECTORIES and DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory) need to be deleteed while in safe mode. Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders". If the files etc lised are not present - Do not worry, just delete those that you can find. If no path is lited, you may need to search for the file(s) - To search, click on "Start" => "Search" => "For Files and Folders" .> "All Files and Folders" and type in the file name. You can delete it right from the search results window.
  • DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory)
    • C:\Windows\Temp\

I am in the process of following these directions it is taking a very long time with my computer running as slow as it is. When I install the Peper Trojan installer, it downloads very quickly and then when I click on it a black box pops up to tell me that "This program can not run in DOS Mode" Am I suppossed to be running it only when I am in Safe mode? Thanks for responding so quickly last night.

I have to ask - Please, follow ALL instructions. When you miss steps, infections reoccur and we will be chasing our tails for ever and an eternity :)
  • Please create a new directory C:\HJT and move the HijackThis.exe file into that directory and only run it from there. That way we can ensure that we have the backup files available in the event that they are needed.
  • How to Remove CoolWebSearch with CoolWeb Shredder <= Please click on this link for instructions on how to download and use CoolWebSearch Shredder which will help remove a CWS infection on your computer. Make sure you close all programs and windows before running it and be sure to click on the "Fix" button.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= Please check this link for instructions on how to download, install and then use adaware. Run this program as soon as possible.
  • Run either of these free online virus scans.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware
  • [b]Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked" (If they still exist):
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\bfvuh.dll/sp.html#96676

I followed every step above. I have also installed Spyware Blaster and Browser Blaster as recommended in your prevention tips. That has fixed my home page changing, however Browser Blaster has detected it trying to be changed 4 times in the last 5 minutes.

Here is my new HJT log:

You have been hit with a bunch of new infections? Please, until we clean this up and put some preventative measures in place, restrict your Internet activity.
  • Download reglite
  • install "Reglite" and run it, enter HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\ into the address bar.
  • Double click on AppInit_DLLs to open a "Data Editor" properties window, if the bottom textfield named "Value" contains a .dll file; then this is the hidden file you need to get rid off.
  • You should not be able to delete this file if you try to clear the value field, IMPORTANT: take note of the path and name of the .dll file. Write it down so you do not forget it.
  • Rename the Folder "Windows" (This is a purple "highlighted" folder in the left hand window) to NOTWINDOWS. Simply click on the folder, click on "Edit" in the menu bar and select "Rename".
  • Click AppInit_DLLs again and clear the value containing the .dll and ok it. This should have removed the .dll
  • Rename the windows folder back to its original name "Windows".
  • Run SpyBot, Ad-Aware and CWShredder
  • Check the following three links for instructions on downloading and running the applications listed:
  • Next step will be to remove this dll file so make sure you have it noted down.
  • Procedure 1
    • Download KillBox
    • Unzip and start the application
    • Paste in the dir <path and name of dll as found in the appinit value box> e.g. C:\Windows\System32\nameofdll.dll
    • Menu Select Action => Delete on Reboot
    • Select File => Add file <It should add the path automatically>
    • <Same Window> Select Action => Process and Reboot
  • Procedure 2 (If Procedure 1 did not work)
    • Click "Start" => "Run" and type in "cmd" (Without the quotations) and click on "Okay".
    • This will open a command window I will assume you have a basic knowledge of DOS if you have any problems at this point just write back I will outline the commands.
    • Type in dir <path and name of dll as found in the appinit value box> and press "Enter". You should see the name of the file listed.
    • Go to the system32 folder (This is where the .dll file will typically reside) and type attrib -R "nameofdll".dll
    • Carry out Procedure 1 again
  • Restart your computer in safemode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?)
  • Open cmd window again as before
  • Type dir <path and name of dll as found in the appinit value box> and locate the dll name the dll should now have been removed and will not be listed.
  • While in safe mode, run the 3 ad-removal programs again, just to make sure all traces are gone.
  • Boot up pc as normal and post a new HijackThis log into this message for further review.

  • I need to reitterate this again - Please follow all instructions.
  • This is your current installation og HijackThis: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe. It needs to be changed. Please create a new directory on your C-Drive and name it HJT. Move the HijackThis.exe file from your current location to C:\HJT and only run it from there. If you need instructions on creating a new directory and how to move the file, please tell me and I will detail the steps for you to make it easier.
If you already have CWS, download it again as you need to be running v1.59.0
  • Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://opgcw.dll/index.html#96676
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0B540EFA-2AC6-5866-AF53-D93A51569CDC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspg.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winll32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\winll32.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\wupdater.exe
  • Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?
  • The following FILES, DIRECTORIES and DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory) need to be deleted while in safe mode. Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders". If the files etc listed are not present - Do not worry, just delete those that you can find. If no path is listed, you may need to search for the file(s) - To search, click on "Start" => "Search" => "For Files and Folders" => "All Files and Folders" and type in the file name. You can delete it right from the search results window.
    • DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory)
      • C:\Windows\Temp\
      • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested.
      • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
      • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
      • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
      • Empty your "Recycle Bin"
    • DIRECTORIES
      • C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\
    • FILES
      • C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspg.dll
      • C:\WINDOWS\winll32.exe
  • Reboot again and log in normally, repost a new HijackThis log into this message for further review.
PLease do not miss any steps. If a step does not work, please tell me so that I can suggest alterante methods.

This is so frustrating!!! I am following all of your directions exactly and it just keeps coming back. I put HJT is it's own directory the first time you told me to, and I've been running it from there. I have no idea how it keeps being put into that other file as well. I followed the above directions TWICE and sure enough the second time half of the things I took out were right back! I ran a HJT log after the second time again and it looks ok. I connected to the internet, opened IE which went to my MSN home page clicked Favorites clicked SWI and then I ran another HJT log and sure enough most of the stuff and more have come back!! WHat is happening??? Here is the 1st log BEFORE I connected to the internet.

The running of HijackThis puts the one entry into the log and that entry is 100% reliant on where you run the file from. Do you have a shortcut that you are running? Click on "Start" => "Run" and type in c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe and click on "Ok". Does HijackThis open?

When you run HijackThis, are you sure that you are clicking on "Fix Checked" and with CoolWebShredder that you lcik on "Fix"

Can you run through the following procedure and see what it turns up ...
  • Download the dllfix.exe program from here or from here and save it in a place you like.
  • Double-Click or Open the self-extracting file. It will ask for installation and change location. Please Keep it in the BOOT drive (Typically Drive-C) and not in any place else. In the "Destination Folder" location, just type in c:\dllfix and click on "Install".
  • Navigate to the folder with the contents of the file (c:\dllfix if you used the suggestion previously mentioned). You will see there are two more folders inside and four .BAT files.
  • Double-Click on "Start.bat" and you should get a command prompt open with a menu listing 4 choices:
    • 1. Run Find-All
    • 2. Run Fix
    • 3. View Readme
    • E. Exit
Type in 1 and press "Enter". This should start up a report screen (Just press "OK" when a pop up box prompts you). Wait until the report has completed as this may take a few minutes. Once the search is complete, a dialog box will pop up saying "Hit 'OK' to view log." Press "OK" and notepad will open with a file named "Output.txt". There should be a random named .dll file listed.
    Option #1
  • Run the start.bat again after the "dll" is found or if you have not found it.. Run option 2 and choose correct option in submenu. The sub-menu should contain:
    • 1. Enter Dll name Manually <= If you found the dll name that is locked or in the appinit key, you type it in under this option.
    • 2. Run Fix without Dll Name It will be searched for Later. <= This is for if you can't find the dll name.
    • E. Exit
    Option #2
  • Post the contents of the "Output.txt" file into this message for further review.
  • Reboot. There will be the scan for the " dll " on-boot screen, which will search and fix it. There will just be a md5 scan if the filename was entered manually. (option 2,1 in start.bat)
  • Reboot and Download Ad-aware. Check for updates. Then Run the update Ad-aware.
  • Reboot. Run HijackThis and save the fresh log.

1. HJT does not run from c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe, I am clicking fix on HJT as well as CWS and I am running the latest versions of CWS, AD-Aware and Spybot.

I downloaded dllfix and followed the directions to get and Output.txt after that I'm sorry but I didn't quite understand Option #1 so here is that file.

press ctrl, alt and del and end task

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspg.exe

Now fix the following entries in HijackThis,
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0B540EFA-2AC6-5866-AF53-D93A51569CDC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspg.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mspg.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspg.exe

Reboot in SAFE MODE and Show Hidden Files/Folders and delete if found,

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspg.exe

Reboot in normal mode

Please download TheKillbox from here: http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.zip

Unzip the files to a folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspg.dll

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". On the next screen, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The filenameand path should show up in the window. If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

Reboot in normal mode and post a fresh log

My Browser Blaster is being hit by at least 2 other items causing it to go off every few seconds, online and off. I've tried to delete the file location on all of them but it reinstalls itself. Is this something brand new? Why am I getting hit with so much stuff all of a sudden?

This sure is an infuriating infection. Try the following:
  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for "appxa32.exe" and "apihz32.exe". If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.
  • Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = <none>
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FA83F041-A1A7-96E9-9A0F-5BFEC18C399D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\apihz32.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [apihz32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\apihz32.exe
  • Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?.
  • Delete the following files:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\appxa32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\apihz32.exe
  • Reboot in normal mode
  • Please download TheKillbox from [URL=http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip[here[/url].
  • Unzip the files to a folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following: C:\WINDOWS\system32\apihz32.dll
  • Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". On the next screen, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The filenameand path should show up in the window. If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.
  • Reboot in normal mode and post a fresh log

Hopefully - The final cleanup :)
Yep .. Please run it again :)
  • Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://npdql.dll/index.html#96676
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\npdql.dll/sp.html#96676

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.
