Can someone help me get rid of the NAb, ETC Trojan. I think this thing is morphing every time I delete it with the NOD 32 virus software. Each time I reboot it keeps coming back but changes its name to NAC then NAD then NAF. I also can't stop the browser from being hijacked to msn.com. I think the problem is with a hijacker aboutblank because the spyware is asking me if I want to restore the old value "about blank" but it should be "yahoo" . Finally, on rebooting, there is an error loading the file C:\winnt\image.dll which is where the NAB trojans are.
Here is my log:

Hi,
There is nothing in your log (right now) to indicate a problem.

First thing to do is ...

Reconfigure Windows Explorer to show Hidden Files:
Open the Windows Explorer Folder Options - View [tab]:

Scroll down to the "Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Display the contents of system folders".

Scroll down to the "Hidden Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Show hidden files and folders", Ok the prompt
Uncheck: "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Uncheck: "Hide protected operating system files" Ok the Prompt, click Apply

Click the "Apply to all Folders" button. Close Windows Explorer.

Resize your browser cache, then rebuild the cache folders ...
How To: Delete the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/...02/delcache.htm

Next: Restart in Safe Mode (see "How To" below)

Start | Run (type) "%temp%" (no quotes)
Completely delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder.

While in Safe Mode, run NOD 32, restart normally and then ...

Create a StartupList log:
Run HijackThis, click the "Config" button
Click the "Misc Tools" button
Select both options "List minor ...", and "List empty ..."
Click the "Generate StartupList log" button
(generates "startuplist.txt") post the contents in your next post.

Hi,

but I can't select Apply to all folders (it isn't selectable).

As in the button is "grayed-out"? or you don't see the button?

Are you the only user? Are you a "Limited User"? or do you have full privledges?
Could be a Registry restriction? ... but you still should be able to follow thru with the instructions anyway ...

Hi,

The button is grayed out.

That's odd ... I'm not sure I know of a Registry restriction for that?
Otherwise it (Registry restriction) would show up in your log ... (and it doesn't)

You still should be able to complete the above (delete files), just recheck while in Safe Mode that the above "Reconfigure Windows Explorer to show Hidden Files" settings are correct. If not change them ...

Hi,

Otherwise it (Registry restriction) would show up in your log ... (and it doesn't)

Policies Shell key:

HKCU\..\Policies: Shell=*Registry key not found*
HKLM\..\Policies: Shell=*Registry value not found*

Otherwise I don't see anything in your Startup list to indicate a problem.

Are you still getting the prompt from NOD32?

Yes I can still ren NOD32, I just did and it dosen't find anything. I also just ran Ad-aware 6.0 and it found 106 things all from ezula, last night it didn't find anything?! I also continue to have my browser attempted to be changed by about:blank.

I'm not sure what to do with those two policy shell keys.

Thanks for the help.

That didn't help get rid of the about;blank browser hijack. What else can I try?

Thanks for the help.

Hi,
Your log does not indicate a problem, nor does it show any "About:Blank" entries.

Do you or did you have any of your browser pages set to "About:Blank"?
If so AWW will (incorrectly) detect this as a "possible hijack". To avoid this issue change the "About:Blank" to another page (doesn't matter), then rescan with AWW. On the next scan you should not see that detection.
[or]
Put the "About:Blank" detection into the AWW "Ignore List".

FYI: the CWS version that hijacks to "About:Blank" with the hidden dll usually only shows up when the following entry exists:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

Which your log never had ...

I haven't intentionally set any browser pages to about:blank.
Ad-aware doesn't pick it up, but immediately after closing Ad-aware I get the warning that there's "a possible hijack to msn.com do you want to reset the browser to about:blank." It doesn't matter what I option I click the browser doesn't change from where I want it which is Yahoo, but how do I stop getting that message. It also occurs on startup.

Thanks again for the help

Hi,
Sorry but your explaination is a bit confusing ........

but immediately after closing Ad-aware I get the warning that there's "a possible hijack to msn.com do you want to reset the browser to about:blank."

So if Ad-Aware is closed (as you say) then what is giving you that prompt?
Is "SpywareGuard" giving you this prompt? Do you have SG set to protect\monitor the IE pages? It may be one of those options? You may have to turn that option off set your pages to what you want, then reset the SG options?
