      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

Suspicious search pages and filenames

10 posts in this topic

I have had problems before with spyware and was able to fix them all but now I'm having problems again. Frequently when I type in a web address I am taken to a search page. This occurs even though the address I typed was correct and if I type it again, it takes me to the right page. I have run CWShredder and the only problem it shows is that it found a file that could be part of CWS.Control.4. It asks if the filename is random but the file is C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE. As far as I know this file is fine so I haven't removed it. I have a mysterious "IE Search Bar" on my computer that uses BlazeFind.com and provides links to porn and penis enlargement among other things. I don't know how it got there but I'm not the only one who uses this computer. I would like to get rid of this but I don't know how. I have run hijackthis and found some files that are not listed on the websites of known BHOs and they weren't there last time I removed the spyware on my computer. Here is my log:

Please go to your add/remove programs and look for BRIDGE, if it's there uninstall it.

You are running hijackthis from your desktop, this is not a good idea because when we do a fix hijackthis will create backups and they will be spread all over your desktop. Can you please create a folder in My Documents and call it Hijack (or something similar). Then extract hijackthis into the folder you have created and run it from there. When you have done that, delete the copy of hijackthis that you have on your desktop.

Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

These ones are optional to remove, but removal will speed up your pc and its performance. You can still access them manually by clicking on the icon. They usually arn't malware, just a resource hogs. I recommend you fix them, your decision.

Go to START>.ALL PROGRAMS..ACCESSORIES>>SYSTEM TOOLS>> DISK CLEAN UP>> and clean everything...

Go to start >Run and paste this in:

%Userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp folder

It will open your temp folder.

Go to the toolbar>Edit>Select All

Then go back to File>Delete

Set hidden files or folders to show HERE'S HOW

Reboot your PC in safe mode: HERE'S HOW

Search for and delete if found these files or folders:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\bridge.dll

C:\WINDOWS\chgp.exe

C:\WINDOWS\yxil.exe

Reboot normally now, Download and install Ad-aware found here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

After installing you need to download all updates for it. Use the Globe Icon in the program, and "Connect" to download latest Reference-file. Please update it before you scan with it then fix all it finds.

Now do the following:

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:

check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:

Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Press "Scan Now"

- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"

- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"

- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"

- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...

It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Click 'Next' again

Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

If it finds "bad" files and registry keys, press "Next" again

It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

That ought to get rid of most of your spyware.

Then get an online virus scan here: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Please select the Autoclean option when prompted.

or here: http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Download and install-

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD

Both are very small free programs that you run once, then again, you know this and then just occasionally to check for updates.

I highly recommend toolbar.google.com - you get a great popup blocker as well as very convenient search.

You can't possibly expect to resolve any future exploits without proper updates.

I would go to windowsupdates and install ALL critical updates. They are very important to have since they are vital to the health of your system. That will fix innumerable bugs, update a large number of important system files, and plug many security holes. It can also prevent future catastrophes! People have no idea how many predators there are out there. It's a shame really.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

After This, Reboot and Post a Fresh HijackThis log.

And well take it from there =)

I'm having a lot of problems with popups, particularly with blazefind windows popping up. I had previously cleaned my computer but I think somebody downloaded a bad file because it was fine up until about a week ago. Here is my log file:

Your threads merged to here. Please stick to this one until we close it.

You need to update your IE.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

You also need to get the current version of HijackThis (1.98).

Download and save http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

After doing those updates please post another log, and let us know how things are.

You still havenn't updated your IE. This is important to do! A number of vulnerabilities were fixed.

Tick the boxes next to all these, then close all browser and explorer windows, and tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Then Reboot.

Looks good. Nice work. :)

For some reason the log shows your IE as still 6.0.2600 instead of 6.0.2800, but it does show SP1.

Here are some suggestions for future protection:

Download and install:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

Both are very small free programs that you run once, and then just occasionally to check for updates.

Also see

So how did I get infected in the first place?

And the best popup stopper I've used is the Google toolbar 2. http://toolbar.google.com/

Does everything seem ok now?
