Hello,
Kind of nervous as this is my first post. Can you help me?
My browser keeps starting at smartsearch, even though I try to change it back to Yahoo, my normal starting web page.
I tried Pest Patrol, and it keeps finding CWS pests
Spybot and CWshredder did not fix the problem either.

I downloaded and ran hijackthis, and got the following log:

You got the same thing as me. I've already had some replies, if you want to check those out.

bump again...

Also, I just read and followed the instructions for starting to clean my computer (one of the requiremets for the 2+ day pinned article in malware forum). So, I ran Spybot, Adaware, Coolwebsearch Shredder, Trend Micro, and Trojan Hunter. They all reported finding things, and fixing them (although I still appear to have the same problem....guessing the fixed other things I was not aware of).

I also noticed that the system attempts to change the IE home page to about:start when I launch or close Internet Explorer or Outlook Express. (I set Spybot to warn me when this event occurs, and allow me to deny the registry changes).

I am guessing with all this cleaning that you will want a new hijackthis log, so here it is:

  • Please create a new directory C:\HJT and move the HijackThis.exe file into that directory and only run it from there. That way we can ensure that we have the backup files available in the event that they are needed.
  • How to Remove CoolWebSearch with CoolWeb Shredder <= Please click on this link for instructions on how to download and use CoolWebSearch Shredder which will help remove a CWS infection on your computer. Make sure you close all programs and windows before running it and be sure to click on the "Fix" button.
  • Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":

Thank you so much for your help. I followed your instructions, and admit to being a little confused on step 6. I think I deleted everything properly, but some of what was in the windows\temp directrory looked mighty important (am so nervous...sorry)

When I rebooted I noticed that I still had the problem. Here is my new log. Again..Thank you so very much for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What problem? Everything and anything can be deleted in the TEMP folder. The log, itself, is looking pretty clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

I missed one - Delete this entry in HijackThis:
O18 - Protocol hijack: about - {53B95211-7D77-11D2-9F81-00104B107C96}

Let me know if you still have a problem after that is gone.
