Hi there,

I would really appreciate some expert advice!!

I can not do any web browsing through IE or AOL, they both keep displaying "Action Cancelled".
I have used Ad-aware 6.0, CWS Shredder, BPS Spyware/adware removal but I still can't browse the net! I can still connect to AOL and collect my e-mails through AOL but no web browsing... just "Action Cancelled".

Here is my Hijackthis log, I hope somebody can help me.

Unfortunately, with the time expired I must request a new HiJackThis log.

Note, however, that I will be notifed when you respond.

Also, make sure you run AdAware and Spybot S&D first, removing what they find.

Hi LPP,

Just to give you some extra information, before my first HJT log I ran ad-aware and BPS spyware/adware remover and they found 937 spyware components. (including eZula and New.Net). Since I removed these spyware components I have been unable to browse the internet. I have just ran ad-aware again (with the recommended custom config) and it found some of eZula and New.net in the system restore. They have been deleted.

Also I am unable to ping the Localhost or any web address (no reply), but when I ping the IP address of a website I get a reply?

Here is the new HJT log:

The only entry in you log now is this one:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)

And that is a matter of clean up.

Unfortunately, it sounds like removing new.net improperly may have caused your problems, You may be interested in checking the information re BPS on this website: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm

Also, removing items from you system restore may have robbed of of a chance to use a recent restore point.

At this point I would suggest restoring to a point before the infections begain, if possible, and then working from there.

There are two things we can try before that.

First:
1.Download the Hoster from here:
http://members.aol.c...dbee/hoster.zip
2. Install the program and run it.
3. Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
4. Exit Program.

Second:
If you use AOL, remove and re-install the AOL program. If it is AOL components that are the cause, this may work.

Hi LPP,

Thank you for pointing out that BPS is a load of cr@p!

I actually managed to get back web browsing capability.
I did some research on New.net and found out it can corrupt the
winsock and winsock2 regsitry entries. So I exported them from a clean xp machine and imported them into the corrupt machine and it now seems to be working.

What is the most effective methods to prevent re-infection?

Glad you got your connectivity back! Good fix.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.
Be wary of strong drink. It may make you shoot at tax collectors, and miss!
