I've got unwanted searches popping up and other pop up windows that I can't get rid of.

I've run Spybot and cleaned all I can but it all won't go away.

Sorry about the generic title.

I have read the FAQ ... well I have now...sorry

Hello,

Lets start by removing WinTools....

To remove Wintools:

1. Boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key as your computer reboots.
2. Kill running entries by depressing the ctrl, alt and del keys to bring up the Task Manager --> Processes Tab ---> highlight Wintools and click "end process."
3. Uninstall Wintools from Add/Remove programs. It should prompt for a reboot, please do so.

Please verify that the version of Spybot Search & Destroy you're using is v1.3 as earlier versions are no longer receiving updates. If you do not have version 1.3, please click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3 - Install, update, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Ad-Aware and install, and configure it for a customized scan.....

Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry," "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites," and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start." Make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green, then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next." The bad files will be listed. Right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - This will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?"

Next, perform an online virus scan at Trend Micro and an online Trojan scan at Sygate. (See links in my signature below). Allow each program to remove whatever it may find. Reboot after each scan.

Now, use the link below to proceed to the Windows Update site. Scan your system for needed updates, then download and install ALL critical updates. Reboot when finished.

Scan with HJT and post a new log into this same thread, and we will work on the remaining issues in your log.

Ok, Thanks for the help so far. I've done the things you suggested and here is my revised log:

One other question though...today I also decided to dump IE and use Firefox. Will this eliminate most of my problems too?

Abdiel,

You're welcome.

As to your question about Firefox versus Internet Explorer..... No browser program will give you immunity from malware. Granted, Internet Explorer is targeted far more often than others, however, it's also far more broadly used. Firefox is a fine program, but please keep in mind that there will be times when you will need to use I.E. because you're in a situation where Firefox is not a supported browser. Regardless of your choice in browsers, you will always need to take steps to secure your system from those who would intentionally cause harm.

Presently, you have HijackThis in your "My Documents" folder. This is fine, however, it needs to be in its own folder so that all backup copies it makes will be kept together and not scattered about. Please right click on a blank space in My Documents, select “New” then “Folder.” Name the new folder something like HJT or HijackThis. Now, you can hold down the left mouse button and just drag HijackThis into its new folder.

NOTE: Please print a copy of these instructions because you will be working with all windows closed except HijackThis.

Run HijackThis and place a check mark next to the following items then, WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, select “fix checked.” Please note that the items in BLUE are optional suggested fixes that will not remove the programs, only keep them from running at start-up, and may have the added benefit of freeing up some of your system’s resources.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

The following two 04 items have randomly named file names, and as such are normally malware, UNLESS you know what they are, and they are from a safe source, please check for removal.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ncv] C:\WINDOWS\ncv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gzkf] C:\WINDOWS\gzkf.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BJCFD] C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Reboot into safe mode, this way:
Restart the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the ”Show Hidden Files and Folders” option:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Now, search for, and delete if found, (some files may not be present after previous steps) the following randomly named files if you fixed the two randomly named 04 items with which they are associated:

C:\WINDOWS\ncv.exe

C:\WINDOWS\gzkf.exe

Reboot.

Delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

C:\Temp\

Abdiel,

You've done a fine job. This is a clean log! Posted Image

Please take a few minutes to read the short article, "How did I get infected in the first place?" (See link below) You'll find lots of good information on keeping your system clean in the future. You'll also find links to excellent free anti-spyware tools.
