Google searches are returning bogus results, though in different ways at different times. When entering a phrase in the Google toolbar, I can momentarily view the legitimate results before they are replaced by results which list 2 commercial sites before showing the rest of the results. (It's as if two 'sponsored links' were being listed first, without any acknowledgement that they're 'sponsored'.)

Specifically, I type in Fox Theater. For an instant, the result shows www.foxtheatre.org as the top result with www.fabulousfox.com second. Then, results appear which show www.ticketsnow1.com first, www.smartpages.com second, and www.foxtheatre.org third, www.fabulousfox.com fourth. The rest of the results appear legit.

I can then add to the original search phrase and again, a similar result occurs.

I search for Fox Theater Hackensack and for a moment see that a cinematreasures.org page is listed first. Then, it moves down a slot to make way for www.smartpages.com again. Again, beyond this, the results are legit.

Here's where it gets interesting. I change the search to "Fox Theater" Hackensack. Now, it shows a cinematreasures.org page first, followed by 18 legit links. Then, about a hundred porn links which all appear to carry the phrase, "Fox Theater, Hackensack, NJ" and then a few more pages of legitimate results. (There are also a few legitimate results sprinkled in with the porn links.)

I get similar results when searching for other things as well (and the Fox Theater in Hackensack was never an adult theater by the way, just standard movies).

I've run Adaware, Spybot, and NAV without any threats being reported.

In following the Hijacked article's directions, I came upon a BHO that was not listed. Below is a copy of the log. I'd appreciate whatever help you could offer. (BTW, I'm pretty low tech.) Thanks, bamtino

Copy the contents of the quote box to notepad:

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\searchrep.SearchRepPP\CLSID]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\searchrep.SearchRepPP.1\CLSID]

Hit save as
save as filename: clear.reg
Under the filename set to all types, and save it to the desktop.

Close all IE's, double click the clear.reg
when asked to merge say yes.

Then search for and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdhmd.dll

If you get a message that the file is in use, reboot and delete it.

Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

Okay Dave, apparently I'm even more low tech than I'd previously thought.

I followed the 'clear.reg' instructions. Now, how do I find the C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdhmd.dll file?

When I use Windows Explorer, there's no "WINDOWS" folder listed on the C drive. (I'm using Windows XP-Home Edition if that helps.)

Thanks for your patience.

P.S. I know I haven't gotten to this step yet, but isn't the second BHO item you've told me to fix actually a 'safe' MS Money BHO?

I performed the tasks outlined, yet wasn't able to find the Windows file I was instructed to delete. Couldn't find msdhmd.dll anywhere.

In addition, a more recent NAV scan uncovered "Download.Trojan" I also deleted the file that NAV listed as infected.

I'm not getting the same bogus search results (no more redirects with commerical links being inserted at the top) but I'm still a bit concerned. Here's my most recent HJT log:
