      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

CWS Hijacker/Trojan

13 posts in this topic

I'm sure many people will be familiar with this problem but it's CoolWebSearch hijacker/trojan and unfortunately my PC is infected. I've already looked up many internet forums and did a lot of the things people there instructed (run Ad-Aware, CWShredder, HijackThis), I've even located the malicious "hidden" file with Registrar Lite (although now it seems to have gone after I deleted the AppInits_DLL value) but lo and behold, my homepage is still "about:blank" everytime I reboot and launch Internet Explorer. Anyway, here are the malicious DLL files on my PC:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wdmnpch.dll (hidden) (and seemingly gone)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mhaea.dll (visible)

I've been trying to delete "mhaea.dll" from my System32 folder but to no avail so here's my latest HijackThis log file if anyone can help. I'm using Windows XP home edition. I don't know how deadly this trojan this but at any rate, it's becoming really annoying!!

EDIT: By the way, if anyone's gonna instruct me on fidgeting with DOS MS Prompt or anything like that, please give all the steps and explain in greater detail because I'm not as computer literate as I look!

If this should be of any help, take a look at this screencap of the problem:

http://img20.photobucket.com/albums/v61/tourniquet29/cws.jpg

I assume the Spyware Removal pop up is misleading because I'm getting those popups everytime about:blank comes on and as you can see, even the Google Toolbar isn't able to prevent them.

nightwish, you might want to join us in the spyware info chat room so that I might be able to work with you one on one and see if we can get this thing nailed in the butt..

Download http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/xfind.zip .

Unzip, run the 'find.bat' inside.

Wait till it terminates and find 'log.txt' inside which

you'd need to copy and paste the content of log.txt into your next reply.

Regards

find.bat won't run. I'm getting the same problem with find.bat as I was with runme.bat. Windows is giving me the same error:

Just to update on what's happened today...

I managed to kill the malicious "mhaea.dll" file last night so now it seems that my browser's back to normal, and my homepage is back to Google.com. I ran HijackThis several times and "mhaea.dll" is gone as well BUT the trojan, which is called Win32.Mersting.B is still on my system and I still can't get rid of it. This file used to be hidden but for some reason it's now visible in my C drive. The trojan is located here:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wdmnpch.dll

win32mersting.jpg

As extra precautionary measures I've downloaded the Google Toolbar to block popups and placed all the CWS affiliates in the "Restricted Sites" list in the Internet Options. I also ran eTrust EZ Antivirus software but the virus wasn't detected as shown in the log file here:

TrendMicro Housecall has helped me to delete two additional infected files but wdmnpch.dll is still eluding all the antivirus software :(

Here's another update:

I gave another shot at deleting that wdmnpch.dll file and it appears that I've succeeded :) Here's what I did:

In the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, I located "wdmnpch.dll" and renamed it to "wdmnpch.doc" (turning it into a supposed Microsoft Word file). I tried deleting it them but it didn't work, so I created a NEW folder in my C drive called "wdmnpch", CUT "wdmnpch.doc" from the system32 folder and PASTED it into this new folder. The file is hidden so the filesize of "wdmnpch" was shown to be 0Kb. I moved the entire folder to the recycle bin and emptied it. Afterwards I did a search on my system and found "wdmnpch.txt" which I easily deleted. I then did a search again but this time no file by the name of "wdmnpch" could be found. I ran Ad-Aware and they couldn't find any infected files. I also ran Spybot but no threats were found.

In the log file here, wdmnpch.dll hasn't been detected either:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system - unable to open file - not scanned.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\h323log.txt - unable to open file - not scanned.

Finished scanning: 20:18:09, 19/05/2004

Number of files scanned: 4482.

Number of files that could not be scanned: 6

No file viruses detected.

I guess that means I've got rid of the trojan? Hopefully it won't come back and bite me in the ass :)

Feedback appreciated!! (and thanks to Tim, Subratam, lonny, LittleRed etc. for helping last night) :)

Hello

How are things now ?

Start Hijackthis and place a check next to these items

Close all browser windows and shut down all other programs(even Folders)

that show in the taskbar. Then Hit fix selected

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [websx] C:\Program Files\websx\int139749.exe -auto

Reboot find and delete

C:\Program Files\websx

You might have to have windows show hidden file's and folder's in order to see them.

How to Show hidden files and folders.

Also please locate this file

C:\WINDOWS\System32\MESB.exe right click on it then in the context menue choose properties then go to the version tab , right down any information found there for us please

Hi

I couldn't find C:\Program Files\websx after fixing O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [websx] C:\Program Files\websx\int139749.exe -auto

Here's all the info about MESB.exe:

File version: 0.0.0.1105

Description: MESB Application for WinXP

Copyright: Copyright © 2003-2007

It sounds like the folder(websx) was cleaned up and the run registry entrie was a left over , good thing its now fixed.

I would like to suggest uninstalling both spykiller and anything Kazaa even the lite version

X - Spykiller = Spykiller.exe > shareware "Spyware remover" of questionable quality and repute. There are better alternatives that are freeware to boot
