      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.   EDIT: I have asked our hosting service to do the restore at 9 PM Central time and it looks like it will go forward at that time.  Please prepare whatever you need to prepare so that we can restore your topics when the forum is stable again.

My IE browser was hijacked. And there are some weird things going on with my computer. First of all when I open IE it automatically goes to a certain website. When I change the default home website, it reverts back.

Also when I am searching for something on google or when opening a program, I get a message theat says Office XP professional is installing.

Last but not least, when I go to add/remove programs there is a program that says "Home Search Assistent" (spelled exactly like that). When I click on the the remove button, IE explorer automatically opens to http://t73.com. I have read the faq and done everything. Here is my log from hijack this.

  1. Please create a new directory C:\HJT and move the HijackThis.exe file into that directory and only run it from there. That way we can ensure that we have the backup files available in the event that they are needed.
  2. How to Remove CoolWebSearch with CoolWeb Shredder <= Please click on this link for instructions on how to download and use CoolWebSearch Shredder which will help remove a CWS infection on your computer. Make sure you close all programs and windows before running it and be sure to click on the "Fix" button.

I do not see anything else wrong in the log :)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

I still get the Office installer dialog box and have home search assistent installed on my computer. Are these things related to the malware I had on my computer?

Thank you very much for your help.

Can you provide more information? Preferrably a screen shot and when exactly are the dialog boxes coming up?

I have a screen shot but I don't know how to put them here. They come up when I open IE, MSN, and sometimes when I click on hyperlinks. Also when I open Realplayer.

After messing with this rediculous malware situation ...

i have finally removed this from my computor .... ( and i didnt even need to be in safe mode)

What did i do ?

1st . Opened up folders c:\windows c:\windows\system32 as i have found that this is were all the files seem to show up ...

2nd. loaded up my process manager as well as nortan anti virus and the ever popular hijack this (sweet ass program !!)

3rd .... run nortan on all the native files in the windows folder (excluding the other folders ...) also selected all the files in the system32 directory and scanned them in nortan .... cleaned up all the files ... deleted them on the spot...

if the file cannot be deeletedd check your processes and end the executables process. then delete the file ...also note these files when you hit the registry part when running hijack this... note the files ...

run the scan 2- 3 times on those files the directories stated .. just to be safe ..

*IMPORTANT DO NOT HAVE IE OPEN !!!**

from here once those files were clean , i ran hijack this ... deleted the obvious which is outlined throughout the posts in this and other threads ... basically all non native excecutables .. the dlls

be suspicious with anything pertaining to ie , and or rooted to windows or windows/system32 directory ... IF YOUR NOT SURE .. please scan those files with nortan ....(doesnt hurt)

from here ... once you've cleaned up in hijack this ... check msconfig , or run startuplist and be sure nothing suspicious is being loaded ..

*NOTE keeping those 2 directories open and monitoring any changes is vital .. cause if one of those sneeky bs's sneak back in .. all goes to waste ... to be sure .. always run a quick scan on windows (files only ) and windows/system32 (files only ..) as this whole virus sticks to those folders ...

4th .. in control panel , internet options ... change the homepage to blank or whatever you like ... (hijack this usually changes it anyways)

delete files including all offline content .. delete cookies ..

close ... double , triple check , hijack this again for any changes back ... check processes for unusual process , run nortan on those files again to be sure ... you can even through spybot in the mix

after you are absolutly sure everything checks out .. you should be safe to reboot ...

when you open ie , is the test of whether the bug is still around ...

2 ie reboots will be evident if its still around ...

save logs .. verify all directories as mentioned ... run nortan on the files as stated and check the hijack this .. for any returning entries that should not be there ..

*TIP .. this thing was pretty consistent .. it shows its face in windows and windows/system32 ... pretty much always (unless i jsut lucked out)

this will save you alot of time when scanning multiple times , you can narrow your search down to those two areas ....

hope this helps you out .. if unsure with the hijack this logs .. just post em ,, alot of knowledgeful people here can help out ...

What files should I look for in the system32 directory. I scanned my computer again using Symantec. My browser is not getting hijacked anymore but I am still getting the Office installer dialog boxes.

Can you write the exact error message that you are getting here - Also check the application and system eventlogs and see if any error is recorded at the time you get these popups.

What may be happening - Office has a self repair feature. If a valid file has been deleted, modified or otherwise compromised, it needs to copy back the right one. Can you have your Office XP CD in the drive when you log on.

Also - Can you run HijackThis, click on "Config" in the bottom right corner. Click on "Misc. Tools" and "Generate Startup List". Can you post the results here.

It will take me a few days to get the Office disk because when I moved I left it at my parents house.
