HELP! I was referred to this site by my techie brother and was hoping for some suggestions.

Within the last couple of months I noticed that my PC began performing differently. First, I noticed that my files all had different views. Then I noticed that I could not open my Recycle Bin and nothing deleted went there. Then I open my My Documents folder (and everything else on the C: drive) and to the left see %THISDIRNAME% where it should say My Documents.... I have no idea what is going on.

I have a 2001 Compaq Presario 4000. Unsure of all the memory specs, have an AMD 900 processor. I have run Ad Aware and Spybot S&D to help but that just got rid of some programs. Tried numerous Scan Disks (which only works if I shut down by holding the on button) and Defrags (which never worked properly too) and nothing has really done any good.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Duh- yeah, its Windows ME. I'll try that and get back here to post results. Anyone else have a suggestion to help this (besides throwing the thing in the crapper)?

Would it help if I got the Hijack This thing? How would I go about getting this program? Sorry to be such a newbie....

Hi, Welcome to SWI :)

HijackThis may offer some clues, and can be found [here].

Before clicking on "Save"...create a new folder, example, C:\HijackThis and then save the file inside this new folder. This will ensure fixed backups are efficiently stored.

Once installed, when opening the application hit "Scan", and then "Save" (save to the same folder you just created). Copy the entire text of the newly opened file to a reply in this thread.

Anybody who notices anything out of the ordinary will be able to advise you from there.

Regards :)
