I'm sorry to sound so completely useless and dimwitted. I'm just too chicken to do this on my own.

I have been running up to date Adware on almost a daily basis and deleting the 'possible browser hyjack' things but they just pop on up again and again. The thing that is really getting to me is the mysearch toolbar which appears and boots the very helpful google toolbar off the desktop everytime. It often comes up with 'adult' listings - so is definitely not something I want to be only a click away for the children! I've tried changing the address bar on internet options Homepage and it just keeps on coming up again as mysearchnow.com/passthrough/index.html?http://www.bbc.co.uk

I have now (very bravely for a wimp like me!) downloaded Hijack this and run it.. but seeing all those very sciency lines just put me into a state of complete panic and I sit here looking like a startled rabbit in the headlamps! (no appropriate smiley to accompany that image)

This is the log I got. The first listing seems to be the mysearch but what else is lurking there that I don't want? 'dart jugs' sounds dodgy too???? Step by step instructions please - assume I know nothing and I'm in with a fighting chance (assuming you've got the patience). Thanks a million.

PS I have read all the information etc. as instructed.

Run Hijack this again, and click on "scan" When the scan is complete, fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

Thank you so much for helping.
I have done everything you said. With one exception. The RO Line was not the same in the scan I just did so I thought it best not to touch it. Otherwise I checked everything else. I deleted the two folders you siad to do. BTW I also noticed a folder in the C:\programs called MyWebSearch. Would that be anything sinister?
I notice there are lots of new desktop icons called back-up. I should leave those just where they are for now?
This is so scary.. thanks for your patience.
PS When I went on IE just now there was no horrible toolbar! Yea!
Here is the new log since I did what you told me to do.

Will my children have downloaded these nasties unwittingly via MSN Messenger, by any chance?

What software should I run to prevent this ever happening again? Adaware doesn't seem to have helped.

The main parasite removed was LOP. This is installed as the "additional software" with Messenger plus.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.
Be wary of strong drink. It may make you shoot at tax collectors, and miss!

Thank you again.
I have downloaded Spywareblaster. It doesn't seem to come with any instructions, so to speak, but I have checked all the boxes and hope this is OK?
You say that the LOP came in through MSN Messenger. Should I uninstall it and be the most unpopular parent on the planet.. or will Spywarebaster, Adaware etc. put an end to it?
I shall now go and show my appreciation via. the donation button. You have been great.
