Please bear with me as I'm pretty much computer illiterate. I have Spybot and also Norton, but have been coming up with things that I just can't delete. I have deleted some (ie., TVMedia, CleverIEHooker). They go to my Norton protected recycle bin, I clear them out of there, reboot, and they are back. Someone advised me to run HijackThis and then paste my log here, so I did. Also- I did read the FAQ.

Hello,

You have a CWS infection. Please click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Reboot when done.

If you have the latest version of Spybot Search & Destroy, good. Otherwise, click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3 - install, update, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot when done.

Click here to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then click the gear wheel at the top and check these options to configure Ad-aware for a customized scan:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?" Reboot when finished.

Next, perform online virus and Trojan scans, using the links in my signature below for the Trend Micro virus scan and Sygate Trojan Scan. Reboot after each scan.

Now, please proceed to the Windows Update site (see link below) to download and install all available critical updates. Reboot when finished.

If you do not currently have a firewall, please download and install one of the free ones for which you will find links below.

Scan with HJT and post a fresh log into this same thread.

OK, I did everything you suggested. Hopefully I did it all right, LOL! I tried to run the sygate trojan scan, but it said I was blocking them, I don't know how. I do have something called trojan hunter, maybe that is why? I updated Spybot, downloaded and ran Ad-aware to your specifications. It came up with a ton of stuff and quarantined it all. I also downloaded and am running zone alarm firewall.

Question: With all of the other protection that I now have dowloaded and the places I know if to check for problems, do I need this Trojan Hunter on my computer?

Ok, here is my log from hijackthis:

I SO appreciate you taking the time to reply and walking me through this. My computer and I thank you
Let me know if there is anything else I need to do, or anything I need to delete. I am afraid to delete anything myself since I don't know what half of it is. I looked through the files on my computer thinking I would delete unnecessary stuff to clear up space, but I might as well have been trying to read Latin, LOL!

Thanks again,
Julie

Julie_angel,

You're very welcome, and you're doing great! Posted Image

Don't worry about the Sygate scan as long as you're able to update and scan with TrojanHunter as the definitions are updated frequently. Just open the program and click on the update button near the top of the window. By all means, keep TrojanHunter! It's an excellent program. I have it on my own machines, as well as an antivirus, firewall, Ad-aware, etc., etc. All these programs have their own niche.

Right now, you have HijackThis on your Desktop. It needs to be in its own folder so that any backup copies it makes will be kept together and not scattered about your Desktop. Please right click on a blank space on your Desktop, select “New” then “Folder.” Name the new folder something like HJT or HijackThis. Now, you can just drag HijackThis into its new folder, using your left mouse button.

NOTE: Please print a copy of these instructions because you will be working with all windows closed except HijackThis.

Please run HijackThis and place a check mark next to the following items then, WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, select “fix checked.”

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{A045DC85-FC44-45be-8A50-E4F9C62C9A84} - (no file)

If the following 04 item belongs to the free version of Incredimail, it is suggested you uninstall the program because of associated adware. Also fix the 04 item. If it is the paid version, keep it, and also keep the 04 item:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IncrediMail] C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~1\bin\IncMail.exe /c

If you removed Incredimail, remove this 08 item also. If you did not remove the program, then keep this:

Next, change your settings to show hidden files and folders. Then reboot into safe mode and delete the following:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\INCREDIMAIL\ < folder (Delete this folder only if you've removed Incredimail)

Reboot.

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

C:\Temp\

Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select "delete all offline content."

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot, scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log into this same thread.

Ok, I will do all of that. Right now I am going back through everything you told me to do in your first reply because somehow most of that bad stuff came back, even with the firewall on and everything :weep:

Thank you again and as soon as I am through I will post my log.

Julie_angel,

You're welcome.

I know it can be frustrating at times, can't it? Just print everything out and go through it carefully, step-by-step. No hurry. I'll be here when you're ready with your log.

Allrighty,

I did all that you said to the best of my ability. I didn't get rid of the Incredimail, I wanted to ask you if it is a serious risk? If it is, I will definitely get rid of it. Also, I wanted to ask if my spellchecker is a risk at all? I don't need it, I just like it.

Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select "delete all offline content."

I deleted the Temporary Internet Files, but when I did it again and checked "delete all offline content", it kept gettng stuck. So I did Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and it said that it was not responding. I don't know what is up with that :scratchhead:

Ok, here is my new log:

I'm sorry to do this, but I've run up against another problem now.... When I get online, I can only stay on for a few minutes, then whenever I try to go to another site (any site) I get an error message and have to restart my computer. Do you have any idea why this could be? I changed my startup settings in Spybot, I don't know if you can tell by my log if I deleted something I wasn't supposed to? :gasp:

Edited to add: I just re-checked my startup list through spybot (I don't know how else to do it), and there was something on there now that just said "sys", with no other information. I unchecked it and then I rebooted again, and so far so good. I guess I'll see!

Julie,

I hope that little "tweak" you did with Spybot Search & Destroy took care of your problem. Nothing we fixed in your log would cause this, and I don't believe you removed anything else. If it should happen again, please post the error message and we'll see if we can figure it out.

Your new log looks fine. Just keep an eye on the Incredimail. The paid version is okay, but the free one is known to bring in adware and may "phone home." As long as you're aware, you can get rid of it if it starts causing you problems. Your spellchecker should be okay.

When you deleted the Temporary Internet Files and then tried to "Delete all offline content," it may not have stalled, it may have just been taking a really long time to do its job, especially if this hadn't been done before. I actually saw one computer take 30 minutes to delete all of the offline content.

Please take a minute or two to read the article, "How did I get infected in the first place?" (See link in my signature below). You will find good information on keeping your system clean in the future, as well as links for excellent free anti-spyware tools.

NonSuch,

I can't thank you enough! Everything seems to be fine now. I think the problem was that I unchecked some things in the startup that I needed. If I have problems with it again I will post. It's funny alot of people I know claim to be "computer experts" but none of them has been able to help me with these problems, LMAO! Thank goodness someone at a forum I frequent directed me to this site. :D

I ran the Trojan Hunter again when I was having the trouble staying online, and all it came back with was this:

Warning: Unable to unpack UPX-packed file C\:Windows\Downloaded Program Files\23B25370.exe

And the same thing with this file C\Adberdr60_enu.exe

I'm thinking they are probably nothing, just thought I would ask.

I'll probably get rid of the incredimail. Thank you for your patience and time!
