I have been trying to help a neighbor whose browser has been hijacked. His homepage has been hijacked to about:blank. He is getting popups about having malware on his computer, he has lost notepad, and today he got some porn on the computer. He has been running an updated Ad-Aware, but most of the things he removes, come back. We ran SpyBot today, and removed several items. I also ran an updated CWS shredder, and it found CWS.Searchx, but later I ran it again, and CWS.Searchx was again found and removed. I ran an updated HijackThis, and removed a trojan downloader, and a BHO that was on the list of bad BHO's from sysinfo. I also removed the R1 and R0 entries in HijackThis, but they returned. We ran the antivirus and antitrojan as advised, and found nothing. There are two BHO's that I couldn't find on the list from sysinfo, and someone on the forums stated that they renamed sr.dll and that seemed to help. I couldn't identify lee.dll. I couldn't find anything on the 04 entry, "ugiygi.exe" I am posting from my computer, as my neighbors computer will barely function. Any help will be appreciated.

Please get an updated HijackThis log and do not reboot that machine or sign off until you hear back. The moment you do, the files will mutate and change name so any fix provided will not work.

Thanks for the reply. I ran home at lunch to get a new HijackThis log from my elderly neighbors computer, and found they had left for the weekend. If I had known this, I would have waited longer before posting the link to my post. I will post the new log as soon as I can. They paid someone to repair their computer, and as best as I can tell, all he did was install and run Ad-Aware. I explained that I needed this boards help to get the job done right. Thanks again, and I will post back ASAP.

I was able to bring my neighbors computer home and worked on it tonight. I think I got rid of CWS. There are a couple of things in the log I wasn't sure about (possibly unrelated to CWS), so I waited until you had a chance to look at it. Is there anything else that needs to go? Thanks again for your help.

Everything seems to be okay, except after rebooting, the homepage reverts to about:blank. I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem to be hijacked, it just seems to lose the homepage www.grayce.net. It disappears from the HijackThis log. (the posted log) It seems to lose the ability to keep the homepage setting after a reboot. The about:blank page is the blank page, there is no redirection. I went into the browser settings in Spybot and changed about:blank to www.grayce.net, and HijackThis shows www.grayce.net in Startup page, local page, but Startup page, main page disappears after rebooting. Just when I thought I was ready to give the computer back to my neighbors.

The log itself is pretty clean except:
  • Please create a new directory C:\HJT and move the HijackThis.exe file into that directory and only run it from there. That way we can ensure that we have the backup files available in the event that they are needed.
  • Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ist service uninstall x] C:\WINDOWS\simple1.exe /u
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
  • Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?
  • The following FILES, DIRECTORIES and DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory) need to be deleted while in safe mode. Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders". If the files etc listed are not present - Do not worry, just delete those that you can find. If no path is listed, you may need to search for the file(s) - To search, click on "Start" => "Search" => "For Files and Folders" => "All Files and Folders" and type in the file name. You can delete it right from the search results window.
    • DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory)
      • C:\Windows\Temp\
      • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested.
      • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
      • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
      • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
      • Empty your "Recycle Bin"
    • DIRECTORIES
      • Nothing Yet
    • FILES
      • C:\WINDOWS\simple1.exe
  • Reboot again and log in normally, repost a new HijackThis log into this message for further review.
Also, before posting a new log ... Please go to Microsoft Windows Update and download all critical updates for your system. This is imperative - Especially get XP SP1 and IE 6.0 SP1.

PGPhantom-

I should have gone to bed earlier last night, and just waited for your reply. Getting rid of Simple1.exe seems to have solved the problem with the homepage changing. I ran through a series of rebooting with selective startup, and the problem didn't occur until I reenabled the startup items. I think this has fixed this computer. I am including the HJT log as requested, and hopefully everything is okay. After I finally gave up last night and went to bed, I left the computer downloading SP1. It is installed, but there are 40 more critical updates to download. I am going to return the computer to the neighbors and let them download the updates as it will take quite a while with their dial up connection. I went ahead and included the HJT log even though all the critical updates haven't been done. Hope this is okay. On behalf of myself and the people who own the computer (who are thrilled to death), thank you for all your help.

Dear PGPhantom,
Would you please take a look at my Hijack log file and let me know which items I need to fix. I deleted some, but it came back every night around 10.00PM.
Thanks a lot in advance.
