I'm using IE under Windows XP professional. About an hour ago, IE was hijacked with something which goes to some kind of an unlabeled search page and if I look in the home page address box under tools it says about:blank.

I have read all the appropriate FAQs posts recommended.

I ran spybot and AdAware. adaware found about 14 items, but after removing them, when I reran IE, the problem was not solved. Also, I re-ran Adaware and it appeared that the previously "fixed" items came back.

I also tried to run HouseCall from trendMicro, but it won't run... possibly it is being blocked by the hijack program?

Please help!

Anyway, my HT log is as follows:

I still haven't received any help on this, but in the meantime I've done a few experiments on my own. One thing I forgot to mention in my first post is that I also ran CWShredder, but without any positive result. In fact, as it runs, it just says "not present" on most if the items it checks.

some facts:
Notepad is gone.
Adaware generally finds 16 -17 objectionable objects when the hijacker manifests.
one cookies that keeps coming up is edge.ru4[1 or 2].
one files that sometimes comes up is gji.dll
the html search page that appeares upon manifestation is sp.html

An adequate temporary fix is Adaware, which after running and fixing, I can to to IE, change the start page back to www.netscapte.com and usually browse for while with no apparent interuptions.... unless I try to do certain things like run a virus scan via MicroTrend Housecall. In this case, before the scan can begin, IE comes back with a message saying it has to close. Before this infection, I had no problems running Housecall, so I think the hijacker is blocking it.

Another thing that doesn't seem right is that when I try to get the CWShredder update, by clicking the update button, it just hangs and the update never comes (I'm using version 1.59.0 of CWShredder). But it's not obvious to me that this program is being updated since the most recent info on that website seems to be from april 2004.

The version of IE I'm using is 6.0.2800 SP1 and the MSVM version is 3810, which according to what I've read from the various FAQs is the immune version (to CWS), but obviously this is not true.

I've also found that I can't restore my system to a date prior to the infection, it just gives me a message that the system can't be restored to that date (no matter what date I try), so the hijacker also appears to have control of that function.

If I run Adaware, and then restart the system, and run adaware again, it comes up clean. But then I'll think the system is ok for few days and then boom, it's back!

If anyone can help me, please do!

I have the same exact problem down to the "T".

Hoping someone can address this post, it'll help a couple people out for sure.

Please download "FINDnFIX.exe". Run the "!LOG!.bat" file and post the results into this message for further review.

Dear PGPhantom

Thanks for responding.... sorry about the previous post, but it was in progress.

I ran FindnFix, but since I don't have NotePad, if failed when it tried to open it (I think). I did find a file called Log.txt which I opened in WordPad. Here it is:

This will take couple or more steps to fix. Be sure to Follow the next set of steps carefully, in the exact order specified:
  • Open the "FINDnFIX\Keys1" Subfolder!
  • Locate the "MOVEit.bat" file, Right-Click on it and select => "edit". The file will open as empty text file.
  • Copy and paste the entire highlighted line in the following quote box
(all one line) into that blank 'MOVEit' file:

    move C:\WINDOWS\System32\WDMPLOB.DLL C:\junkxxx\WDMPLOB.DLL

  • Save the file and close.
  • Get ready to restart your computer.
  • In the same folder, DoubleClick on the "FIX.bat" file.
  • You will be prompted by popup Alert to restart in 15 seconds.
  • Allow it to restart the computer!
  • On restart, Navigate to: C:\FINDnFIX\ main folder:
  • DoubleClick on the "RESTORE.bat" file.
  • It'll run and produce new log. (log1.txt) post it here!

Dear PGPhantom,

I followed the instructions you gave, but even though I see the MOVEit.bat file in the FINDnFIX\Keys1 folder, when I right click on it, I get the following message text box:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\FINDnFEX\Keys1\MOVEit.bat'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click on the Start button and then click on search."

Is the hijacker blocking me hear also???? I'm really getting frustrated!

Can you create a new test file on your C-Drive. Call it MOVEit.bat and post the following line into it:
move C:\WINDOWS\System32\WDMPLOB.DLL C:\junkxxx\WDMPLOB.DLL

Save it, then click on "Start" => "Run" and type in cmd and press okay. This will open a command window.

From there type in:
copy c:\MOVEit.bat C:\FINDnFEX\Keys1\MOVEit.bat

Hopefully you will get prompted to overwrite the existing file and you can select Y without any further problems - Proceed with the next steps.

Open the FINDnFIX\Files2< Subfolder and run the => "ZIPZAP.bat" file. It will quickly clean the rest.
When done, Restart your computer and Delete and entire 'FINDnFIX' file+folder(s) From C:\.
Post a follow up HijackThis log when done!

You'll be prompted to email the results - Please do so.

Can you Run HijackThis and delete the following entries:

Reboot, wait an hour or so and then post a new log - Those entries should of been deleted unless you have multiple infections of the same bug ...

Can you also run through, install and add ALL of the following:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

PGPhantom,

I rebooted and then I downloaded the suggested programs, but haven't installed them yet. I also read the AdAware tutorial you referenced and realized I hadn't been scanning against all the options offered. This I corrected and ran it.... interestingly it turned up about half a dozen CoolWebSearch references, which I then deleted, not thinking I should have left them for the HT scan....

I'm going out to dinner and when I come back I will repost the HT log again, just to make sure, anyways here is the current HT log:

I am very happy to say - It looks clean :)

The following is a recommended maintenance regime for Windows XP:
  • The following DIRECTORY CONTENTS (But not the directory), need to be regularly emptied. Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders". Click on "Apply to All Folders" and then respond "Yes" when prompted and click on "OK" to apply the change.
    • %windir%\prefetch\
    • %windir%\Temp\
    • %temp%\
    • %userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp\
    • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
    • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
  • Click on "Start" => "Settings" => "Control Panel" => "Internet Options". Click on "Delete Files", select "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK". Click on "OK" once more to close the options panel.
  • Right click on "Recycle Bin" and select "Empty Recycle Bin" and respond "Yes" when prompted.
  • Back-Up your files. You can use Windows backup which must be installed from the XP CD <cd-Drive>\valuadd\msft\ntbackup. Be sure to back up the following:
    • Office documents
    • Email data - Messages and address book
    • Games saves.
    • Digital Photos and other artwork.
    • Moveis that you have created or edited.
    • MP3's and other music files.
    • Browser favorites and bookmarks.
    • Downloaded files/programs.
    • Passwords, security codes etc for anything that is password protected like Quicken.
    • Activation codes for applications doownloaded and registered.
  • Do not go without an anti-virus program. Free ones include:
  • Be sure to run a periodic Trojan Scan with any of the following programs:
  • Use a Firewall such as ZoneAlarm
  • Regularly scan for adware and spyware using the following programs:
  • Defragment your system. Click on "Start" => "Programs" => "Accessories" => "System Tools" => "Disk Defragmenter".
  • Update your system. Go to Microsoft Windows Update and download all critical updates for your system.
  • Cleanup Your Disk. Click on "Start" => "Programs" => "Accessories" => "System Tools" => "Disk Cleanup".
  • Clear your icon cache. Delete the following file: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db. Reboot.
  • As bad as it may sound - Once a year reinstall your O/S from scratch - i.e. Reformat your hard drive but be 100% certain that you have backed everything up as listed above. <= Obviously this should not be done except by professionals etc.

PGPhantom,

Thanks so much for your help... You're a GODSEND!.... I let it sit overnight to make sure the hijacker was gone and everything seemed ok this mornining.

Also the good news is that I am now able to run TrendMicro HouseCall for the first time since I contracted the hijacker, confirming that it was actually blocking it before. I didn't try to see if I could now do a system restore, for risk of recontracting the hijacker. I did run AdAware again and it turned up only two cookies:

edge.ru4[1].txt and doubleclick[1].txt which I had seen before... are these associated with the hijacker? I didn't delete them yet as I wanted to run a final HT log.

Also, NotePad is still gone although the icon has changed back to the normal one.... is there any way I can restore the NotePad program?

Finally, I would like to make some kind of donation (vial paypal) to you or your designee for all the good work you do. Can you provide me with a link where I can do this?

Thanks again so much.....
rbwilson

BTW, here is the final HT log
