I'm a first-time user of Hijackthis. I have been using spybot and adaware for over a year now. I can't seem to get rid of the WToolsS.exe process in my task manager. I also suspect that I have one or more other spyware issues. Here is my log file. Thanks for the help.

You may find it helpful to print out these instructions.

First of all, you are running hijackthis out of a temporary directory. Can you please create a folder in C:Program Files and call it HijackThis or HJT or similar. Then extract hijackthis into the folder you have created and run it from there. The reason for this is that Hijackthis cannot create backup files whilst it is being run from a temporary folder.

Go to TrendMicro and perform an online virus scan. Let it fix anything that it finds. Do the same at Pandasoftware.

You already have Spybot, if you do not have version 1.3 installed, uninstall version 1.2 with the provided uninstaller. Download Spybot1.3 from http://www.safer-net...p?page=download install it, open it and click the Search for Updates button. When updates are found, put a check mark next to all and click the Download Updates button. Now click the Search & Destroy icon in the left pane, then the Check for problems button at the bottom of the window. When the scan completes, make sure all the items in RED are ticked, then click the Fix Selected Problems button. Screenshot instructions for installation and setup are here if needed.

Open Adaware and configure it as follows. Screenshot instructions for setup are here if needed.
  • In the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.
  • Make sure the following settings are made and on (ON = GREEN)
  • From main window : Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)
  • Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.
  • Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning Engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot.
  • Click Proceed to save your settings. Now to scan just click the Next button.
  • When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).
Reboot your computer.

Go to Start > Run > Services.msc

Scroll down to the WinTools for IE service, stop it, and set it to 'Disabled' if it exists.

In start > control panel > add or remove programs - make sure you have change or remove programs selected in the sidebar and highlight the following programs and uninstall them.

WinTools

Run HijackThis and perform a scan. Close all other windows, except for hijackthis and put a check against the following items and click 'fix checked'.

Reboot and post a fresh log so we can check that everything has been cleaned. In the meantime you can help prevent this happening again.

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies.

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Both are very small free programs that you run once, and then just occasionally to check for updates.

If you don't have an up to date hosts file it might be a good idea to replace it with a new one. This will help you block bad sites and ad servers. In windows explorer go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Etc, locate the file called hosts (no file extension) and rename it to hosts.old. Then download MVPS hosts file and extract it to the exact same location.

It may be worth reading How did I get infected in the first place?

Scoff,

First off, thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I think I've followed you instructions correctly, but there were some curiosities that I would like to run by you.

First, I uninstalled WinTools but there is a Wintools Installer on the Add/Remove List that requests that you sign onto the internet to uninstall. This sounded fishy to me so I left it there for now.

Second, while deleting the Wintools folder in Safe Mode I came across the file:

C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\Wintools.exe-040FD16C.pf

I didn't know what the hell it was so I left it alone.

Third, I ran msconfig just look at my startup options and AChkr.exe was still selected. Therefore, I don't know if I properly removed it.

Lastly, I ran the online scans and it found two trojans that it could not clear. These Trojan files, called "Trojan Subsearch D." were:

C:\I386\restore.exe
C:\Windows\Systme32\restore.exe

Here is my new log file. Thanks again for you help.
