Weird activity began two days ago, about the same time I got an email virus that NAV couldn't fix, so it was quarantined instead. It has since been deleted. Don't know if it is related to the weirdness or not. It was one of those w32.netsky.p viruses (which NAV has caught and fixed plenty of times before?!)

First I began to notice that in addition to my Google searches, a new browser would open with Lycos search results. I ran HJT and fixed four "R" entries that contained a search program I had never heard of. Now my Google toolbar has vanished, and I'm getting popups frequently, even when I do not have a browser open. I tried to reinstall Google toolbar, and got an error that began "Your computer currently has Browser Helper Objects disabled." I exited.

I just ran SpyBot S&D and deleted all red items. Below is my HJT log. Any help you can offer is appreciated!

You have the Peper trojan, which requires special treatment to put it out of your misery!
Please download and run this uninstaller.

Click on the peperfix link, and download the program. Then go off line, and run the program. It will remove the files, leaving one orphaned entry to be cleaned up with Hijack this.

Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

These may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Please post a followup Hijack this log, and say if your problems persist.

Thank you!!! I downloaded the program (found 9 files), fixed the files in HJT, but ran into some trouble with these two (even with hidden files showing):

C:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp\8ll3m7u.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Mdm7.exe

For the first one, in the temp folder I found the following:

8ll3m7u -- size=823 bytes, created minutes ago
8ll3m7u -- size=228 KB, created 5/8/04 (have I had a virus that long?)
8ll3m7u.dll -- size=360 bytes, created 5/8/04

I also did a search for 8ll3m7u and found a file under C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch. It was last modified on 5/8/04. It says 8ll3m7u.exe-33F3BB54.pf

I could not find Mdm7.exe in the System32 folder. I did a search, and found Mdm7.exe-0696a389.pf in the C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch folder. It was last modified yesterday.

I have not deleted any of those.

Here is a new HJT log:

Also, I'm curious... Been reading about this peper nasty and learned that it downloads files from the Internet. How do I find everything it downloaded and delete them? Or did the peper zapper take care of the miscellaneous junk added to my computer by the trojan? Thank you!
