The first thing that i did was download and updated AVG antivirus, Ad-aware, CWS, HijackThis, StartupList, SpybotSD. I then ran, and tried to use them as well as i could. I used Ad-aware many times, and got rid of an incredible amount of junk, registry keys, etc. My AVG was run and said i had multiple viruses. The first one was FVprotect.exe. I beleive i fixed that, although there still may be some left. AVG also brought up the virus I-Worm Net.sky and i beleive that was taken care of.

AVG brought up to trojans, one being the "Trojan Horse downloader.preasrio.a". I have since learned that this is something dealing with compaq, and system32\msCMTsrvc.exe. It is not a trojan. The other one that comes up called "Startpage.4.BS. i have not been able to get rid of. AVG will not let me. It comes from system32\notepad.exe

My IE is goin crazy right now. First off it went to some C:\\searchpage.html. I ran hijack this, and using a faq, i think i got rid of that. Now http://69.50.191.52/2484/ is my new special homepage. It is constantly closing me out when i go to a site it doesn't like. This includes the panda, and trojan hunter links that others have been given, as well as the other trojan horse testing links.

So here are my HIjackThis log, and my startuplist log, i dont know if the latter is helpful, but looking through it, way too many progrmas open up at startup, and i know many of them have to be malicious. Any help would be great.

First:
You are running an outdated and therefore unsafe version of Internet Explorer.
You NEED to upgrade to IE 6.0 SP1
http://v4.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

(Make sure you get the correct language version for your operating system! ).

Next, go to the Windows Update site, and download and install ALL Critical Updates on offer.
That will fix innumerable bugs, update a large number of important system files, and plug many security holes.

This step is mandatory if you are to avoid Gaobot, Sasser, and Help file exploits.

Second:
Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the bold below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/plain]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/xml]

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Third:
Before we begin, please be sure that HiJackThis is in its own folder. This will allow us to use backups to restore entries if necessary. Please do not put HiJackThis in a temporary folder, or on the Desktop. I suggest using 'c:\program files\hijackthis\' or C:\HiJackThis\, but any name you choose is fine.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.websearch...e.aspx?tb_id=99
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://69.50.191.52/2484/

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

Reboot in Safe Mode*, delete the following: (you may need to show hidden files**)
C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\ <-- delete folder

*How to Boot into Safe mode: http://service1.syma...001052409420406
**Show Hidden and System files and folders
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Also, uncheck the boxes for hiding known file extensions and hiding protected operating system files. We want to see it all. When we finish here, it would be a good idea to rehide the protected operating system files but leave the rest to be shown.

Reboot in normal mode.

Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

I got everything to work with the exception of the new IE. When i try to install it, the error message comes up saying that it will not install something that does not have the official windows logo. Then it stops installing.

Your log is clean.

I do not recall an error message like that from WIndows Update. As long as you have a legitimate copy of Windows XP there should be no problems, You might check Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://support.micro...N&ln=EN-US&FR=0) and see if they have a resolution.

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update: <-- YOU NEED TO DO THIS!!
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

1. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:]
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

2. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wildersse...ywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm

1. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.
a. AdAware: http://www.lavasoft.de/
b. Spybot S&D: http://security.koll...n&page=download

For more information about Spyware, the tools available, and other informative material, including information on how you may have been infected in the first place, please check out this link: http://forum.gladiat...?showtopic=9857

Good luck, and thanks for coming to our forums for help with your security and malware issues.
