      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

Browser Hijacked?? Home page keeps changing

11 posts in this topic

:techsupport: I've run Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. No matter what I do, my homepage redirects to http://hp-desktop.aol.com/ (by this string in the registry (I suspect): http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&a...amp;pf=desktop). Is this a spyware/malware issue or am I missing something else? Thanks in advance. My Hijack this log is below:

It's my father-in-law's computer so I don't have immediate access. I can say with 100% certainty nothing has changed since this scan has run.

Hello,

I'd like to be sure Zlob is gone.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).

Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Is he still getting the redirects?

Thanks,

tea

It may take me a couple of days to get the new SmitfraudFix report. It is still impossible to change his homepage and it's still redirecting.

What's Zlob?

Thanks

Hello,

Zlob is the most obvious infection he is/was dealing with, indicated by this line in the log: O21 - SSODL: buprestidae - {b59f3ba4-98da-4b5f-8a2d-7b56fb11140b} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cthkpcv.dll (file missing)

You might also have him do this and see if it helps : Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.

Apply.

Apply and Exit Display properties.

The URL you show as the page he's getting redirected to is legit, but he should be able to change it to whatever he wants and have it stay set. :hmmm:

Post back with the results when you can. :)

Thanks,

tea

Hello,

That's great! :D Zlob is still present.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background. So only run it once!

Thanks,

tea
