Edit: Duplicate Topic deleted... Please stick to 1 Topic per computer...

Help,

My computer is using 100% of its cpu. It seems to have started when my son fell for one of those “Your computer may be infected” messages. He loaded “error detector”.

Norton Antivirus indicated we had the Vundo Virus but it couldn’t clean it. The file I believe it said was infected was bywuro.dll

Over the last 3 weeks I have tried everything I could think of.

I have read the faq and hope you can help.

I’ve run spybot and adaware. They couldn’t see it or fix it.
I’ve run “fixvundo” and it couldn’t find it.
I’ve tried command prompt to delete it but it was “in use by another program”.
When booting to safe mode, screen would show safe mode but no desktop icons or menu bar would show.
Rebooted normally, things went back to normal except 100% CPU. This occurs within minutes of reboot even if no programs are started by me. When booting safe mode, CPU is normal.
I have disconnected computer from network and internet. I use Linksys Router as firewall.

Below is hijack this log. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Delete this folder in bold if found.

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\

Restart the computer normally.

Download the Registry Search Tool from here:
http://www.billsway....les/RegSrch.zip

Unzip to your Desktop and double click on regsrch.vbs
(if you have script protection, please allow this to run)

In the dialog that opens enter the following:

PS, I took the liberty of looking for the original dll that was logged by Norton A/V "Byxwuro.dll" and it was not found. Evidently, that was eventually cleaned.

I spoke too soon. I looked for the incorrect file. The original file notified by Norton was byxwuro.dll. I rescanned with search file you recommended and found the following, although Norton is not reporting it.

Did what was suggested.

Executed fix.reg.
Rebooted computer.
Re-enabled Norton A/V.
Shortly thereafter, Norton reported Trojan Vundo with same file as before(mljji.dll).
Re-Ran search of registry. Below is copy of log.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\mljji]

Noticed address changed on first line. Deleted manually in safe mode. Then tried to delete the mljji.dll file. It won't let me delete since it is in use.

Re-booted in safe mode and it still came back.

This is a nasty booger. Plan to try and boot to floppy to delete dll. Any more suggestions.

thanks

Let me see this result.

Download this file - combofix.exe

and save it to your desktop (Important). Also save the below command in Notepad as a text file so that you can copy/paste in safe mode.

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe"

Boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key just before Windows starts to load.

go to start --> run and copy/paste in the following:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe"

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Save it and post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

In your next post, please include
  • new hijackthis log
  • combofix log
*use separate posts to ensure the logs don't get cut off!

Here is the HijackThis log file run after running combofix. I posted combofix log first but didn't see it show. Wanted to see which one showed up first before re-posting and having a duplicate post.

thanks

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text in Bold contained in the code box below (including the first line, which is a command to the tool Registry keys to Delete: to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Registry keys to Delete:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{0032CCFA-D80B-DABE-C53B-7E94CD4E0B9D}

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
Delete these folders in bold.

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\APPLIC~1\F?nts Probably listed as Fonts
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\APPLIC~1\??stem Probably listed as System.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HijackThis log by using Add/Reply.

The folders you requested I delete were not present. There was no "Application" subdirectory or anything close to that under Owner.

Below are the logs you requested as well as a report from Norton. After saving avenger log and new Hijackthis log, I opened "Task Manager" to monitor CPU usage. At the bottom is that result.

Last night after posting, I ran Norton. It didn't find anything. I opened takmanager to check CPU usage and left running, it popped up with Trojan message. I rebooted in safe and ran again. This morning I opened task manager and norton popped up with this.

Scan type: Realtime Protection Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus name: Trojan.Vundo
File: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{F2681A7D-91E5-401A-AC8B-015335799DC0}\RP3\A0001685.dll
Location: Quarantine

I ran hijackthis and checked the 2 items you suggested, rebooted, turned off and on system restore.

opened taskmanger to see if trojan pops back up. CPU usage much better, probably back to normal. I wonder if there is actually a virus there or if taskmanager when left running "fools" norton into thinking there is virus there?
