      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.

need help removing malware infection - crazy popups, SLOW system

11 posts in this topic

Hello,

I've been invected with some form of malware. I've been getting pop-ups like crazy for the last week. The infection is also resetting the Privacy tab under IE to Accept All Cookies. Every time I launch a new browser, that's the setting, even though I always reset it to a higher level.

Here's a list of some of the popup ads I've gotten today:

musicplustv.com

lookforforyou.com

imsafer.com

meevee.com

domania.com

casino.com

campusdirt.com

campusbug.com

c5zedo.com

broadcaster.com

betfairpromo.com

rootv.com

registrydefender.com

winantispyware.com

wixawin.com

smashits.com

It seems to be sensitive to my Internet searches. If I start searching for real estate in Google, I get real estate-related sites, for example.

I've run Spybot, Ad-aware, Ewido (now called AVG) and COunterSpy and removed various infections, but it hasn't gotten to the root of the problem - I'm still getting the popups.

The system has been sluggish, with apps taking a long time to load. IE, OUtlook and other apps crash quite often (hang). The browser has been hijacked once, with the home page reset to MSN.com. Otherwise, it's just popups.

FYI, Spybot found and "healed" something called Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888, for what it's worth.

If anyone can offer some advice, I'd be most grateful. You all are saints for donating your time to this.

I've read the FAQ and directions. Here's the report from AVG (Ewido):

Hello,

1. Download this file - combofix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,

tea

Hello,

This line C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\web folders\ibm00007.dll

represents Torpig.

The Trojan attempts to steal passwords, as well as logging keypresses and open window titles to text files and periodically sends the collected information to a remote user via HTTP. The Trojan downloads and executes additional files from a remote site. Configuration files may also be downloaded which define further behaviors.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, Your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. If it were on my PC I would not hesitate for a moment to do so. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will of course do our best to clean the computer of any infections that we can see but, as I already stated, we can in no way guarantee it to be trustworthy.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do.

Thanks,

tea

Thanks Tea,

The problem seems to be gone since I ran ComboFix. The security settings are holding in place, and I've had no popups. THe machine is back up to speed, too.

I don't have any sensitive data on this one, and don't do anything privacy-sensitive on it, so I'd like to try to clear out any more bugs rather than reinstall. What should I do next?

Hello,

First you should know that you're actually doing more harm than good by running 2 Anti Virus programs. (Trend and AVG) When you do this both programs compete for resources, and the end result is neither does it's best and can cause system instability. I recommend that you choose the one you want to keep, update it, disable the other one, and use it as an on demand only scan occasionally.

Please download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly Ewido)

  1. Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  2. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  3. Click the settings tab, then click "apply all actions" and choose clean (quarantine)
  4. Close AVG. Do not run it yet.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {add33778-382c-4c4f-a60c-620798e1b45c} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ACTdit.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [blexrivx] C:\WINDOWS\System32\uwqlyevl.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xbdibwgo] C:\WINDOWS\System32\emrlej.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ovkilcjf] C:\WINDOWS\System32\mipfslh.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccpdm] C:\WINDOWS\System32\yhdivnoial.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE <----this is a resource hog

O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ACTdit - ACTdit.dll (file missing)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Navigate to and delete the following files (if they exist):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\uwqlyevl.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\emrlej.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mipfslh.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\yhdivnoial.exe

  • In Safe Mode, load AVG Anti-Spyware and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
  • Restart back into Normal Mode.

In your reply, please post the report from AVG and a new HijackThis log. Please also let me know how your computer is running. :)

Thanks,

tea
