Running on my ACER Laptop:

Windows Vista
IE7
AOL 9.0 VR

Followed instructions and ran AVG.. results were:

Welcome to the forum

I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy here lately.

I do not have very much Vista experience, but I will try to help.

Can you tell what process is running up the CPU utilization?

When you tried to reinstall AOL did you uninstall it 1st, if not let me know because we may want to try that at a later time.

What security programs did you recently install? I assume you have not always had TeaTimer, Windows Defender and AVG Anti-Spyware active and this may be a new thing while you were trying to clean up the Trojan.

Have you installed any new toolbars since the problems began? For example when did you install plaxo?

What is disabled in Msconfig?

When IE crashes are you getting any error messages, if what do they say?

I am not suggesting that you do this yet, but have you already tried to use system restore to go back to a point before all the trouble started? If you have not tried it we may later depending on how long ago all this started. Do you have a specific time frame in mind when the trouble started?

I am hoping that the answers to these questions will give us a better idea on which way to proceed.

When you tried to reinstall AOL did you uninstall it 1st, if not let me know because we may want to try that at a later time. Tried both ways Under AOL errors it mostly claims:

Compability issue for reason for shutdown.
This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between Windows Vista and this version of One-Click Fixes. This program was created by AOL.

Recommendation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Contact AOL about upgrades or other possible solutions to help make this program compatible with this version of Windows.

What security programs did you recently install? I assume you have not always had TeaTimer, Windows Defender and AVG Anti-Spyware active and this may be a new thing while you were trying to clean up the Trojan. I installed Comcast McAfee Security Center from Comcast in March.

Have you installed any new toolbars since the problems began? For example when did you install plaxo?
Almost immediately after getting PC

What is disabled in Msconfig?
Too many to list.... lol.. I just put back to load up all startup services.

When IE crashes are you getting any error messages, if what do they say?
Don't know... cannot recall now.. but under problems & reports it says the following:

Follow these steps to troubleshoot problems with Internet Explorer 7

We have detected that Internet Explorer 7 has experienced recurring errors on your computer.

This problem is usually caused by one or more Internet Explorer add-ons. Unfortunately, we are unable to determine which add-on is causing the problem. However, you can follow some troubleshooting steps to try to fix this problem.

Examples of add-ons

Some examples of add-ons for web browsers include:

Extra toolbars
Animated mouse pointers
Stock tickers
Pop-up ad blockers
Troubleshooting

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To try to solve this problem, follow these steps.

Start Internet Explorer with no add-ons

Close all Internet Explorer windows.
Click the Start button, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).
If Internet Explorer starts and runs with all of the add-ons turned off, then you need to determine which add-on is causing it to crash. Go to step 2.

If Internet Explorer crashes with all of the add-ons turned off, then you need to reset Internet Explorer:

Reset Internet Explorer settings

By resetting Internet Explorer settings, you return it to the state it was in when it was first installed on your computer. This is useful for troubleshooting problems that might be caused by settings that were changed after installation. When you restore Internet Explorer's default settings, some webpages that rely on previously stored cookies, form data, passwords, or previously installed browser add-ons might not work correctly. Resetting Internet Explorer to its default settings does not delete your favorites, feeds, and a few other personalized settings. The following table describes what will happen to various settings when you reset Internet Explorer.

Settings categories
Items affected

Settings that are deleted

Browser history, temporary Internet files, cookies, form data, and stored passwords
Typed URL information, offline webpages, menu extensions
Websites added to intranet, trusted, or restricted zones
Websites added for special cookie handling under the Privacy tab
Websites allowed to use pop-ups under Pop-up Blocker settings
Explorer most recently used list

Settings that are reset to Windows or manufacturer defaults
Home page (for information about backing up your home page tabs, see Back up your home page or home page tabs) Back up your home page or home page tabs
Search providers, tabbed browsing settings
Colors, languages, fonts and accessibility settings (General tab)
Security settings for all zones (Security tab)
Advanced tab settings
Privacy tab settings
Pop-up blocker, AutoComplete, Phishing Filter, and Zoom settings
Page setup, toolbar, and text size settings
Feeds settings (sync and notification, not feeds themselves)
ActiveX controls that are not on the pre-approved list (reset to opt-in state)
Toolbars, browser helper objects, and browser extensions are disabled

Settings and items that are maintained
Favorites
Feeds
Content Advisor settings
Pre-approved ActiveX controls
Temporary Internet file (cache) path settings
Certificate information
Internet Programs (e‑mail, instant messenger, and other programs associated with Internet use)
Internet connection, proxy, and VPN settings
Default web browser setting

Steps to reset Internet Explorer settings

Close all Internet Explorer windows.
Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Network and Internet and then click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset.
Restart Internet Explorer.
Disable all add-ons (one at a time) until you can no longer reproduce the problem

Close all Internet Explorer windows.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Programs tab, and then click Manage add-ons.
Click the name of the add-on you want to turn off, and then, under Settings, click Disable.
Click OK.
Restart Internet Explorer. Continue using Internet Explorer the same way you did when you received a crash report. If Internet Explorer continues to crash after disabling this add-on, continue with step h.
Repeat steps b through g for each add-on listed. When you can no longer reproduce the problem, the most recently disabled add-on is the cause of the problem. Please report this add-on to us by using the survey at the bottom of this page to help us improve our error responses.
If these troubleshooting steps do not solve the problem and you continue to receive problem reports, please consider filling out the survey at the top right of this page. To help us continue to investigate this error, include the names of the add-ons that are currently enabled in Internet Explorer in the comments area of the survey.

I am not suggesting that you do this yet, but have you already tried to use system restore to go back to a point before all the trouble started? If you have not tried it we may later depending on how long ago all this started. Do you have a specific time frame in mind when the trouble started?
[b]Yes I've been forced once due to a serious startup error it claimed.. so I restored a few days back.

I am hoping that the answers to these questions will give us a better idea on which way to proceed.

When specifically did you start having problems?

One click fixes in AOL are not compatible with Vista you can not use them. Let me know what the error message says and I will see if there is a manual fix.

You have not installed any security programs since march or may?

Yes the IE7 troubleshooting is exactly what I was getting at when I asked "Have you installed any new toolbars since the problems began?

You can also try the IE7 troubleshooting following those directions, but it is more helpful if you can recreate the error.

If you have re-enabled the startup items please post a fresh HijackThis log and answer the above questions.

I wish I could give you an exact date....

I will try the IE7 troubleshooting I guess.. but it seems more problems with AOL/PC freezing than anything...

Any idea as to the week or month when the trouble started?

Is AOL giving any kind of error message other than the one after you try to use one click fixes? If no error message, can you tell exactly what you are doing when the problem happens and what happens?
