Hi guys,

I have tried about everything and so far I can't knock the trojan.vundo and infostealer virus. I have ran lavasoft, spybot, avg 7.5, latest norton, trend micro, the norton trojan.vundo fix, and nothing has cleaned this little nasty guy out.

I ran all of those programs in safe mode and I turned my system restore off. After running norton after countless restarts it always says that it cleaned out the virus. Upon the next fresh restart the little bugger is still popping up that dam 89.188.16.10 window.

here is my highjackthis log file

Thanks for any help in advance!

Can you rename HijackThis.exe to pdiddy.exe ?
Rightclick Hijackthis.exe and choose rename.
Then reboot and after reboot, doubleclick Analyse.exe and post the log it creates in your next reply (this will be a hijackthislog ofcourse).

Thanks for the help.

I renamed the file to pdiddy.exe, rebooted, and I did not see a Analyse.exe file. I ran pdiddy.exe, and click'd "Do a system scan and save a logfile"

Here is the log file.

I renamed the file to pdiddy.exe, rebooted, and I did not see a Analyse.exe file. I ran pdiddy.exe, and click'd "Do a system scan and save a logfile"

My bad, that should have been pdiddy to ;)

Step #1

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 1 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #2

Please go here to upload a suspicious file for analysis.
  • Enter your username from this forum
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread
  • Browse for this filename: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpqhwyml.dll in the first filename box
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
  • Click on Send File
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Step #3

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Step #4

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items (if still present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00E9792C-699E-4C18-8AE4-67B291EA1C74} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hggfdcd.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06E5C6F0-43D9-434D-B850-EAFFBF2E6604} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geebx.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E033C6C4-4C5A-45DC-B8F2-9F31117F1F5c} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpqhwyml.dll

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [setup] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\kcfcaphr.dll",realset

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0001-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_06) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.4.2_03) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0005-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.4.2_05) -

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\AirfoilInject.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: geebx - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geebx.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: hggfdcd - hggfdcd.dll (file missing)

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Step #5

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Step #6

Reboot Your System in Safe Mode:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #7

Find and delete these files and folders (if they are still there):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kcfcaphr.dll <= this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AirfoilInject.dll <= this file

Reboot your computer normally.

Step #8

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
Please post the contents of the Panda online scan, C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Followed everything and it worked perfectly.

Btw, the "Airfoilinject" on the hijackthis log from my previous post is not a harmful file. It's for streaming music to an apple airport express wireless from any application on my computer. I stilled followed what you said and deleted it as I can install it later on.

Here is the panda scan

http://www.vidbuster.../Activescan.txt

You don't have permission to access /~dillz/Activescan.txt on this server. <-- can't access it.

Btw, the "Airfoilinject" on the hijackthis log from my previous post is not a harmful file. It's for streaming music to an apple airport express wireless from any application on my computer. I stilled followed what you said and deleted it as I can install it later on.

I should have asked you about that file! You may install it back of course!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Step #1

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs):

Weatherbug

The Weatherbug is a utility that shows current weather conditions and future weather forecasts for your locale, but it is an adware supported product.

Then reboot your computer.

Step #2

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • In case it says that nothing was found, Right click the list box (white box) in the main VundoFix window.
  • Select Add More Files? from the menu that comes up. This will open a new VundoFix window.
  • In the Window: copy and paste next in the first field: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpqhwyml.dll
  • Click the Add Files button.
  • Click the "Close Window" button.
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Step #3

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00E9792C-699E-4C18-8AE4-67B291EA1C74} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hggfdcd.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E033C6C4-4C5A-45DC-B8F2-9F31117F1F5c} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpqhwyml.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F4E0F6DE-DE84-4470-9CB0-148AECACEF6E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geebx.dll (file missing)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0001-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_06) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0005-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

O20 - Winlogon Notify: hggfdcd - hggfdcd.dll (file missing)

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Then reboot your computer.

Please make a new scan with HijackThis and if the items you fixed with HijackThis are still there. Please boot into Safe Mode and fix them with HijackThis (then reboot back to normal mode.)

Step #4

Step #4

Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Use the Add Reply button to post your new logs (Panda log and the Combofix log back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Step #1

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

attrib -r -s -h %systemdrive%\RECYCLER
del %systemdrive%\RECYCLER
attrib -r -s -h %systemdrive%\RECYCLED
del %systemdrive%\RECYCLED
shutdown /r /t 0 /f

Save the file as recyclerem.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Double-Click on the file recyclerem.bat, a small DOS type window should open and close immediately.
You can answer any questions with "Yes".

Step #2

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Step #3

Please run Notepad and paste the following text into a new file:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser\{014DA6C9-189F-421A-88CD-07CFE51CFF10}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"@"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"RecordNow!"=-
"WeatherWatcher"=-

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".

Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

Then reboot your computer.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and tell me how your system is running now!

About your Panda log:

Cookies are nothing to be worried about. They get installed on your computer everytime you visit any webpage. Now some of those are good cookies that get installed for ease of use for next time you visit the same page, but some cookies are spyware used for tracking users surfing habits.

Most of those cookies are third party cookies that can be blocked:

In Firefox go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies

Click the small triangle next to cookies to expand that tab and put a check next to "for the originating website only". This will prevent third party cookies from being installed on your computer.

In IE go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy and click on Advanced in the Privacy tab

Now put a check next to "Override automatic cookie handling"

Set first party cookies to Accept and third party cookies to Block

Also put a check to "Always allow session cookies" OK your way out.

This won't prevent all bad cookies from being installed, but will reduce the amount.

Also there is another program you can use.

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

In firefox I did not have the expand tab in the cookies.

This is what it looks like

Posted Image

Under the pull down is

"i close firefox"
"ask me everytime"

Should I pick "i close firefox" and set my exceptions to that rule in the exceptions panel?

Yes. That would be the best option.

This log looks clean!
  • Don't forget to re-hide all files and folders. To re-hide all files and folders:
    • Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    • Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    • Click Yes to confirm.
    • Click OK.
  • This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP make sure you get updated to SP-2!!

Please post back if you are still having any problems....

Hey thanks so much for the fast reply!

Is there any way to remove the internet explorer icon from my desktop without dragging it to the trash?

Thanks again!

The computer is running perfect. No signs of that nasty bug anymore.

You're welcome!

Yup. Go to the Control Panel --> Desktop --> Customize Desktop (http://images.pcworl...2409p132-2b.jpg) --> Remove the checkmark for Internet Explorer.

Regards,
