One of my engineers dropped off his laptop the other day, a complete mess. Loaded with trojans and spyware, and almost impossible to do anything productive. I'm to a point now where I need assistance getting the last of the bugs. Every time I change his desktop back to the standard Windows XP desktop theme, it changes back to the Windows Classic theme on reboot. Most of the popups have stopped, but occasionally one will sneak in unexpectedly. I know that there are issues remaining, and I don't want to send it back to him until I'm sure it's clean.

I've run Spybot and Adaware, both multiple times, AVG Anti-Spyware, and Housecall from Trend Micro. I also downloaded and ran the Trojan Hunter app mentioned in the newbie thread. Norton AV Corporate edition is installed and the realtime monitor is enabled.

Here's a copy of the latest HijackThis log, any help with this would be greatly appreciated:

Print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.

Please change the location of HijackThis.exe.
Create a new folder in your C: Drive
Name it C:\HJT or HijackThis and move the HijackThis.exe file in it.
It's best for this tool NOT TO be located in your Desktop or in a TEMP folder.
This way you can undo any changes if something goes wrong.

Disable Trojan Hunter Guard:
Please disable Trojan Hunter Guard, as it may interfere with the fix.

To disable Trojan Hunter Guard:
  • Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue icon with a magnifying glass that can be difficult to see but the handle is red.
  • Right click it and select settings. Uncheck "Load at startup" and "Enabled"
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Trojan Hunter Guard.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O4 - HKCU\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [svchost.exe] C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Delete this file in bold if found.

C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe <- Delete the file in this folder only.

Restart the computer normally.

Enable TrojanHunter Guard.

Submit a fresh HijackThis log. Let me know what problem remains.
