      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

System running in slow motion again

35 posts in this topic

My computer is - again - running in super slow motion. I do not find anything when running trend micro online, or AVG free edition on the computer.

The system takes literal minutes to load a program. Also the Last Kid At Home put a Microsoft word 2007 trial on the system and then took it off. Now when you try to run a number of programs the computer tries to do a Windows Installation. I have to cancel the "installation" about 4 times before the program opens. (Windows Word, Registry Mechanic are two examples)

Someone - no me - added microsoft location finder, OpwareSE4 and who knows what else. There seems to be leftover bits of programs that are not on here. AOL which I still use, offers free McAfee but it will not run on the system, insisting I have multiple virus programs on, so I finally just loaded the AVG.

One option I also consider is just taking off the programs I need onto a portable drive and having someone reformat the hard drive. Any thoughts on that?

Hi,

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:

ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

1) Restart your computer

2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.

3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear

4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: check.gif
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Hi again,

Ok, nothing much there, let's have a look around,

Download http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?a...nload&id=19 Deckard's System Scanner (formerly Comboscan) to your Desktop.

  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on comboscan.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, a text file will open - ComboScan.txt
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of ComboScan.txt in your thread.
  5. A folder, C:\ComboScan, will also open. In it will be another text file, Supplementary.txt.
  6. Please attach Supplementary.txt to your post.

Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

To attach a file to a new post, simply

  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:

    C:\ComboScan\Supplementary.txt

  3. Click Upload.

What ComboScan will do:

  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. ComboScan automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

(If you have any problems attaching the supplementary file, copy and paste it into a second thread.) (If you have any problems attaching the supplementary file, copy and paste it into a second thread.)

This is as far as I can go. I follow the hyperlink, scroll to the bottom of the page and download the program. takes seconds.

I click and open the program, now called dss.exe

It starts to do system backup and hits the section Backing up Registry Hives (12%) and freezes. It says dss.exe has encountered a problem and has to close.

A few tries it gets to 16% Temporary Files. I did used Internet Options to remove temp files.

First thing I tried was to remove program from computer and re-download.

Second I tried to run in safe mode. Program says it is meant to run in normal mode and not run without ummm someone smarter than me telling me what to do. (g)

suggestions?

Ok,

Looks like you've got some programs disabled via MsConfig, which isn't ideal.

Do Start > Run and type in msconfig and hit OK. In the box that appears, under the General tab make sure Normal Startup is checked. Under the BootIni tab make sure no boxes are checked. Under the Startup tab make sure all items are checked. Click Apply > OK and close the Utility.

Then please post a fresh HiJackThis log.

Here is the new log. I have so many things that are either in start-up that aren't needed - picasa media detector and a bunch of others, and ones I am not sure of either what they are, or if they even match programs now on the system.

also still have the microsoft Word conflict, but have the original disks of Office and can reload once this is fixed. if it is (g)

Hi again,

Ok, let's stop some of these unnecessary startup items:

Scan with HiJackThis and put a check in the box next to the following items;

Close all browsers and windows, click on ‘fix selected’ and allow HJT to fix these entries.

Restart.

Open HiJackThis, click Misc Tools Section > Open Uninstall Manager > Save List, save the list and post it here.

Scan again with HJT, (with all browsers and windows closed) and post the new log in this thread.

Hi again,

Use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;290301

to remove the installer configuration for those programs that run the installer when you open them.

OpwareSE4 can be removed via Control Panel > Add/Remove programs, the uninstaller is listed - Microsoft Location Finder.

Java Runtime Environment is up to Ver. 6 .1, install from here:

http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Then, via Control Panel > Add/Remove programs, uninstall the earlier versions:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

If there's any other software you don't want on the uninstall list, remove via Control Panel > Add/Remove programs.

Then let me know how the PC is running.

took off the extra java updates. I do not see microsoft location finder or opwarese4 listed in add/remove.

I am not sure what exactly to do with the windows installer cleanup now that it's on the computer.

duh.

computer still runs in slow motion a lot. For instance if I shut down IE or AOL it can take 2-5 MINUTES to have them load again even though I am still logged into Windows XP.

Hi again,

I am not sure what exactly to do with the windows installer cleanup now that it's on the computer.

Ok, you said

Now when you try to run a number of programs the computer tries to do a Windows Installation. I have to cancel the "installation" about 4 times before the program opens. (Windows Word, Registry Mechanic are two examples)

Open the Installer Cleanup:

Find those programs that kick off the installer when you open them, highlight them so:

and click remove. (Note, if Microsoft word 2007 is listed, try removing the installer for that first, and see if that makes a difference.)

Next:

Please register (it's free, don't worry) with PCPitStop and run the full tests here. When the tests are complete, a results page will pop up. Click "Share these results with TechExpress" on the left-hand side. Then copy the URL provided and post it here for me.

Next:

Please register (it's free, don't worry) with PCPitStop and run the full tests here. When the tests are complete, a results page will pop up. Click "Share these results with TechExpress" on the left-hand side. Then copy the URL provided and post it here for me.

ah. still slightly confused but I fixed the problem. DD had added Word 2007 trial then removed it when trial ran out. Removal messed up the Word2003 version I have on here. I used the original disk and it fixed the issue. Now clicking on a doc doesn't start up windows installer. At the moment (g).

OK,

Do Start > My Computer.

Right-Click on Local Disk C.

Click Properties > Tools.

Under 'Error-Checking' click 'Check Now'.

Under 'Check Local Disk C’ check both boxes and click 'Start'. You will be prompted to restart. Do so. You will get a blue screen on restart, be patient, the error-check takes time, your PC will start normally when it is complete.

Next:

Follow the instructions here:

http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/Disk.asp

• Defragment files (Drive C)

• Reduce System Restore space (Drive C)

Next:

Follow the instructions here:

http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/Internet.asp

• Adjust IE browser cache size

• Adjust Receive Buffer Size

Let me know if things are any faster.

All done. I could not figure out how to do the TCP Receive Window and was not sure if I should buy the pitstop optimizer program. we had access to systweak advanced system optimizer so I loaded and ran that for now. I did all the other things.

It seems faster but loading of programs is still very slow. minutes for IE or AOL to load when I first log on the system.

Should I assume there is still more to fix? Re-run the virus and trojan checkers?

I am not 100% sure I'm doing this correctly. I used browse to find the dbitmin.dll file and put it in the line to be checked, but hours went by without it happening. I tried to send it in email but the computer says it is open and in use. How do I turn it off? I did restart the check online and will leave the browser open to see if it works this time.

It's a busy time so the queue is probably long. If possible, try it again at a quieter time, say in the morning.

I tried again just now. It says uploading file, then flips to the same screen - 0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio

also still says it is open when I try to send it to them via email, which is the other option on the site.

Will try again in the a.m.

Tried again this a.m. Last night was the only time it said it was uploading, but did not upload it. I put it in line again today but same thing happens -get the note that says 0 uploaded and the page sits there for 6 hours so I assume it's just not even ending up in line.

Perhaps it is somehow running in the background and can't be uploaded or emailed?

Hi again,

Ok, let's try something else:

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer

2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.

3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear

4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

5. When you are at the logon prompt, log in as the same user that you had performed the previous steps as.

When your computer has started in safe mode, and you see the desktop, close all open Windows.

Now, double-click on the SmitFraudfix icon that should be residing on your desktop.

When the tool first starts you will see a credits screen. Simply press any key on your keyboard to get to the next screen.

You will now see a menu as shown in the image below. Press the number 2 on your keyboard and the press the enter key to choose the option Clean (safe mode recommended).

The program will start cleaning your computer and go through a series of cleanup processes. When it is done, it will automatically start the Disk Cleanup program

This program will remove all Temp, Temporary Internet Files, and other files that may be leftover files from this infection. This process can take up to a few hours depending on your computer, so please be patient. When it is complete, it will close automatically and you will should continue with step 11.

When Disk Cleanup is finished, you will be presented with an option asking Do you want to clean the registry ? (y/n). At this screen you should press the Y button on your keyboard and then press the enter key.

When this last routine is finished, you will be presented with a red screen stating Computer will reboot now. Close all applications. You should now press the spacebar on your computer. A counter will appear stating that the computer will reboot in 15 seconds. Do not cancel this countdown and allow your computer to reboot.

Once the computer has rebooted, you will be presented with a Notepad screen containing a log of all the files removed from your computer. Please post that log here.

Hi again,

Please run Notepad and paste the following text into a new file, do not include the word ‘quote’:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad]

"Imgexfat"=-

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files". Then please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

Then please post a new HiJackThis log.

(Please use the t_reply.gif to reply. Its easier to read. Thanks)

Hi again,

Good, that's removed that entry. How is the computer speed now?

The computer is running faster most of the time. It still seems to have trouble at times, when opening programs, usually IE or AOL.

What do you think of my removing the program I used and buying the basic pitstop? It seemed to me it was more comprehensive.

hope all is well there.
