Hi,

I have been using a forum for months and all of a sudden as of yesterday it wont let me connect to it anymore - I get a page saying internet explorer cannot display webpage

What forum are you talking about?
It doesn't mean, because you get a page saying that the webpage cannot be displayed that you are dealing with malware. It's most probably just because the forum is offline, or you have been blocked/banned from there - or a third party scanner/security tool is preventing you from accessing that page/forum for security reasons.

Hi

theugcc.com
The forum is not offline.
I have been onto the admin there and they say that they can see no reason from their end.
It is not a secure site.
I have emptied cache
Put in trusted sites
Tried Opera & Firefox
I can connect through a proxy - but it is slow and some of the features are not available if I do.
Ran CCleaner

I don't know what it could be I have tried everything I know how to do - I am no expert.

Someone told me about this site because you helped them with a similar problem of pages not loading.

Sorry if I have wasted your time.

I tell you what just forget it - I wasn't expecting such a curt and holier than thou attitude, when I was asking for help - this site was recomended to me because of the friendliness and expertise - well they obviously were wrong.

Excuse me? I was just asking more info and explaining what could cause this.

Edit - I see you have edited your post already.

You have to understand that it is very hard for us to troubleshoot if we don't have enough info - that's why we ask more info and that's why I also asked what forum you were talking about, so I can have a look what may cause this.

Sorry - I am so upset, because I have spent over a 1000,00 on this equipment - only for every little thing to go wrong one after another - first the graphics card wouldn't work - it didn't have enough power - then I found out my copy of windows wasn't real - now this - like I said I am sorry - but I am just just at the point where I am going to chuck it in the garden - I am so fed up with it...

I assume you haven't been blocking that forum through your hosts file either?
Can you give me the url to that forum please? So maybe we can tweak this with putting in your hosts file with the IP - since it could be possible that your DNS won't resolve it.

Other note,

Do they have an IP Board forum? Did they update their forum software recently?
I see from your previous edited post you already empty your cache. Did you also delete the cookies (especially cookies for that forum?)
In case it's IPBoard and they have been updating recently, then this may be the cause. If you're on dial-up, then you will indeed have problems.
In that case, ask the Admin there to disable "match the user's IP Address" / disable "the stronghold cookie"

Then, you should clean cache and cookies again and try again.

Ok, let's see first of modifying your hosts file solves it..
If not, then you have to contact the Admin of that forum again and ask him/her to disable "match the user's IP Address" / disable "the stronghold cookie"

Anyway, do this first..

* Download: HostsXpert
Unzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\HostsXpert
Start HostsExpert.exe, click 'Restore MS Hosts File' and click OK.
Then, after you clicked: "Restore MS Hosts File", in HostsXpert, click the "editing" button.
Then you'll see, above menu will be changed.

There you'll find a field: "Add Line"
In that field, copy and paste: 72.232.13.194 www.theugcc.com
Then click the Add Line button above.
You'll see in the right pane that 72.232.13.194 www.theugcc.com should be added.
Then reboot your computer and try to access the forum again.

Can you doublecheck if the exact entry: 72.232.13.194 www.theugcc.com is now present in the right pane if you open HostsXpert?

Since I cannot access the forum either, since it says I have to register - when you use your proxy and you can connect the forums, what exactly does it display in the addressbar? Is it forums.theugcc.com ? Or theugcc.com/forums ? Or just www.theugcc.com?
Let me know as this is also important.

Extra note, I see it's vBulletin Version this forum runs and not IPBoard as this one.
However, I do see it's a Release Candidate,

Powered by vBulletin Version 3.6.0 Release Candidate 2

- so that may explain a lot as well.
A Release Candidate is the same as a beta version. And beta versions are still buggy. Read more about it here:
http://www.vbulletin...ad.php?t=192079

Also, since you said the forum has been updated recently and you were having problems since then - well, it's not on your side. I mean, it's an issue that the Admin of that board should fix even though he/she says that everything is working fine at their end. They should really doublecheck everything. Not sure why it is still this Release Candidate since the official is already the vBulletin 3.6.7 version now that should be used....

That's because you are surfing anonymous you'll get that. What do you get if you don't use the proxy? Because it's important we fix it when you don't use the proxy.

Can you also add these lines in HostsXpert?

72.232.13.194 theugcc.com
72.232.13.194 *.theugcc.com

Sorry for the late reply. Had to be somewhere.

Ok, can you do next as well please...

Go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Click OK twice.

Then, go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field: ipconfig /flushdns (make sure there's a space between ipconfig and /)
Hit enter

Then restart your computer.
Then retry again to enter that site.

Also, before this all happened, can you remember if something was changed on your computer previously to this? Have you been changing connection settings? Changing something in your Firewall (router firewall if present?)
Anyway, I still don't think this is at your end if it's only that site you're having problems with...

So you don't remember that you installed Uniblue Registrybooster? Also, are you aware that BitTorrent is installed here?

Anyway, from your first log, I read that you are already having this issue since july 21

Let's see if we can gather from another log if something shows in there that has been modified or installed then which *could cause this - but as I already said, I don't think this is at your end...
But the log may also show if there's malware present - although malware won't cause this issue for that forum..

Do next please..

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Hi,

Looks like the BitTorrent and UniBlue Registry Booster is not present anymore here.. so you can check and fix next entries in HijackThis:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Uniblue RegistryBooster 2] C:\Program Files\Uniblue\RegistryBooster 2\RegistryBooster.exe /S
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BitTorrent] "C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\bittorrent.exe" --force_start_minimized

Also check and fix this entry in Hijackthis as it is not required:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

I also see you have BitLord installed. No, they are not bad, but.... p2p programs, that's where malware lurks, so if you use p2p programs, there's ALWAYS a risk that you can get infected, because you never know what you download.
You may want to read this: http://www.microsoft...ilesharing.mspx

Also, I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
I don't see anything in your Combofix log which should cause this...
I assume you installed Spywareblaster afterwards?

There's however one thing that is strange/suspicious -- I see your winlogon.exe being modified two weeks ago.
This doesn't have anything to do with the fact that you cannot connect to that forum, but this winlogon.exe was modified 2 weeks ago (2007-07-14). This one doesn't "modify" like that.
You said you did have problems before, hardware related problems etc.. so did you do something with the winlogon.exe? Because it is a needed system file and without that file, you won't be able to boot your system.
I do see that you installed or updated your videocard /nvidia drivers the same date/time then, so not sure if that's why it was modified, however, normally it shouldn't. But since you were having problems with your videocard previously as I read from your post, maybe that explains it..

Anyway, just to make sure, Go to next site:
http://www.virustota.../en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Yes, just run Hijackthis and check the boxes I mentioned and click Fix checked.

Firefox is safer than IE, and imho it is better since it has some very useful extensions:
https://addons.mozil...x/browse/type:1

I am sure you're going to like it :)

I am sorry to hear that you were/are having so many problems with your brand new PC. What I don't understand is the fact that, when it is a brand new PC, how comes that Windows Vista wasn't installed on it? Because since january, all new pc's have Vista on them instead of XP - unless it was an "older" pc.
Do you still have guarantee?

I assume, at Virustotal, that it said No virus was found for the Winlogon.exe ?

and I listened like an idiot and had XP installed - stupid I know

Actually, you were not stupid. At this moment, I still recommend XP instead of Vista since they are still too many bugs in Vista to sort out and also since a lot of software and hardware are not compatible yet. So, you made a good choice. I do have Vista installed on one of my other boxes, it works fine, but on my main box, I will wait until next year to upgrade :)

Gonna try Firefox - when it has dld - how do I get rid of IE?

No, don't get rid of IE, you'll still need it for your Windows updates. You can have Firefox next to your IE. You just have to tell firefox to be your default browser, but it will ask you this anyway.

but I do get a box on booting up that says there is not enough power to your graphics card

I am not a hardware guru, so my help on that is useless, but I did find some threads here which can help:

http://peripherals.a...allvideocar.htm
http://forums.cnet.c...ssageID=2371999
http://hardware.mcse...04-9-78069.html

Anyway, for hardware related issues, you can get excellent support at http://www.pcguide.com/vb/

But that's not your main problem right now. The main problem is still that you can't connect to that one forum not using a proxy.
We troubleshooted your logs and nothing is present there that may cause this. And as I already said, this shouldn't be an issue on your side... but we doublechecked to make sure.
That's why I also asked in my very first post if you were sure the forum was online, if you weren't blocked there etc... Because when you cannot connect to a certain site and we put it already in your hosts file to make sure you can connect, then it has to be something at their side or your ISP's side.

The fact that you can get there through a proxy looks like somewhere your main IP is blocked to access it there.
Most probably this will be an issue that will "resolve" itself automatically. I've had this a few times as well... So what I suggest to do here is, and as you've already did, contact the Admin there and ask what has been changed since then (since they updated anyway) and to doublecheck anything. In a meanwhile, just access their forum through a proxy.

No problem at all, I do understand that it may be very frustrating that you were having so many issues with your computer previously and you were/are totally fed up with this. Especially since it is not your fault. Your case is different with another issue posted here, terrible infected systems, because some did visit bad sites, downloaded a crack etc...and actually it's their fault after all, they should stay away from there...
But that's not the case here, it's nothing malware related here. You didn't visit bad sites, downloaded cracks or any other illegal software etc.. and that's why it may be very frustrating, because as I said, it's not your fault. :)

It should rectify itself within a short period of time. Just tell the admin there he/she should really update their forum software once again... because as far as I can see, it's an outdated buggy version. :)
